| I just purchased a yellow top from Costco for $229. It all depends on what you need the batt for, if it's for your stereo then go yellow top. The yellow top was the best investment i ever made, my installer recomended it. :bigthumbup: |

What are you going to use the battery for??? The basic difference is that a yellow top is a deep cycle battery, that means that you can kill that battery off (deep cycle it) and charge it up with no affect to the battery they work great for systems or any other high power use. The red top is a high preformance starting battery another good thing with them is they discharge super fast so you get the power you need faster!!! (almost like a big ass cap!) If you are going to run your stereo with out your car running for long periods of time then go yellow if you want a better preformance battery go red!!!

| optima says their yellowtop is for accessories, red top is for starting. i'd believe what they say and not some dude on a message board. get the yellow if you need it, are your lights dimming? |

| There are actually 2 different yellow top batteries. One has a dark grey case, one has a light grey case. I forget which one is which, but one is more for starting, the other is more for deep cycle stuff like was mentioned above. If you want to know go to the optima website, it tells you all about what the different batteries are best for. I don't remember the address. |

i just picked up a red top from costco...
the 73/35 dual terminal one
for $149.99 + GST....
which is still hella cheaper than the good deal of $220
But honestly, i have no idea why i bought it.... there's like barely any noticeable starting difference. Ths only thing i notice is when my car is off... my power windows go up and down with greater force. but i do have a 2002 car with direct ignition... so starts for me doesn't feel diff at all.
costco also has yellow and blue tops.
In regards to running a system... the battery only really matters when the car is off. Cause you're basically running off the alt w/ greater current. (parallel... kirchoff's rule)... if you have dimming issues.. get a better alt or cap. but if you plan to run with the car off... then a yellow top would be useful. |

wrong, wrong, wrong!
a yellow top will stop your dimming MUCH better than a cap, and it's cheaper than a HO Alternator. The yellowtop does more than just help while the car is off, it always gets rid of peoples dimming. I've heard it time and time again from people's real-life experience. |

| the only reason it does that is because the yellow top is a deep cycle which means it has huge reserve capacity! |

well all theory aside, bottom line is yellowtop works, caps don't. simple. |

from Optima website:
OPTIMA Yellow Top batteries provide constant performance quality as they are discharging. Even as energy is being drained, your equipment will perform at the same level as when the battery was fully charged. Meaning, you will not hear or feel your equipment slow down or strain for power. |

hmm... i guess so
the optima would be basically a capacitor in series with the alternator. But i'm not sure the capcitance is that high. it would mean that the dielectric constant needs to be rather high
q = CV
C = kEA/d
capacitance varies with the dieletric.
to get 1-2 farads like caps... the constant needs to be pretty high. i'm not sure if the deep cycle battery actually works like that though. |

you're thinking too hard.
Big Ass system + Cap = dimming.
Big Ass system + Yellow Top = no more dimming.
Cap = $300
YellowTop = $200
Cap = Cool Looks
so if you want to buy a nice round expensive piece of eye-candy then listen to your local stereo salesman and buy a cap, if you want a good way to power your system get a yellowtop, or a high output alternator if you have lots of money. |

| or you could have fun adn get both a cap and a yellow top |

i guess, if you're really into wasting your money...
caps are good for one thing as far as I can tell, that's SPL competitions, they're good when you need to hit one big note, with everything you got. |

| agreed, if you are running a big system that takes a lot of power then it is a better idea to upgrade your battery and possibly your alternator than to throw in caps |

Back in the dark ages I had a 97 Taurus with a total of 1200W/RMS. When I added the cap the headlight flickering went away. I have seen this result many a time in my install days except when the power& ground system was inadequate.
