When you have a learners bike license can you insure a bike under your name? Do you need to have a parent with you when you write the learners test if your under 18?

gtaylor
i think you need someone with a real bike license to follow you

Uhhhhh.......ok. Good tip.

I'm not sure if you need a parent to go with you to write the learner...but I imagine it would be the same as for a car. So if you need a parent for that, then yes.

You can insure a bike with just a learners. In fact, you can insure it without a licence at all. A friend of mine has had a bike for a few years, and always had it insured despite just getting a licence now.

No.

And I don't think the ticket is all that much to be honest.

This is how I did it. Took my learners, bought my bike, insured and registered my bike, practiced, took my test. This was all on the same bike. Showed up to my test on my bike and the tester didn't really seem to care.

And really......why would he? He's not the cops. And for all he knows Mom followed you all the way until you pulled into the parking lot.

kouki240

if your over 18 you can just go get the license... there are courses where you can get lessons then after the lessons you can take the test for free with their bikes its something like $400...

if your under 17 (which unless im mistaken you are) and want to get your learners id say pick up a dirt bike first learn how to ride decent in the dirt then go on the street. personally if i had a child who wanted a streetbike at even 16-17 it would definatly be no. im only 17 myself but ive grown up with dirtbikes but i drove a buddies cbr600 which is supposed to be pretty tame little starter bike, and the things haul ass. the thing brings the front end up like thats its job and excellerates faster the 98% of the cars on the street. to put into perspective a bone stock cbr 600 can do high 11's at 115 mph with a good driver most of the cars on this forum couldnt come close to this. thats faster than what a brand new z06 could do (without slicks). i was looking into getting a street bike due to gas prices and the such but honestly i dont have the self control to not drive a bike like its made and would likely end up with my face smashed into one object or another. hell i have a problem keeping my car within safe limits some time.

anyway to answere your question to write the learners test.. Yes you would need a parent or guardien, the purpose of this is to stop kids from getting their licence against there parents wishes, at the same time your parents can void your license at any time if they feel it is nessisary. + the learners bit is a real bitch for motorcycles, i dont believe someone has to follow you on a bike is manditory but they have to atleast be in a car following you and must also have a valid motorcycle license.

key point of this article is dont waste you time getting your moto-license till your over 18 and try to get some riding skill before you even begin on the street. oh and you will be suprised when you phone for insurance on a sport bike and get a quote that would seem more fitting as a life insurance quote on a crack feind with cancer... *dont waste your time on commenting on my spelling mistakes either its late and i was too tired to read this over now i realize this whole think kinda went no where but i spent to long writing it so im gonna post in anyways...:D

I have been riding bikes since i was 10 so I am comfortable on bikes.

The guy at the DMV said I dont need a bike learners because I have my class 5 already. Why did a freind of mine take a written test when he already had his class 5 to get a bike learners. Did they just rip him off?

You still need a learners, you just don't go on GDL.

Oh my that's wrong on so many levels.

I was 17 when I got my class 6 and I needed zero parental permission.

And the learners was real easy. Didn't take a single look at the learners manual and I think I only got one question wrong.

anschutz_93
how is it wrong on many levels
the learners on motorcycles is a real bitch... you have to have someone following you all the time when your on a bike. if you dont have a parent or someone who has their licence willing to follow you all the time your only option is to pay for lessons and have the teacher follow you while you ride. i did not state anything about the difficulty of the test.. and its a good thing you didnt look at the learners manual i dont think there is one for bikes.

i call bullshit unless you got your licence more than 4 years ago www.mmic.ca/newsite/images/content/PDF/albgrad.pdf

anyway 180 if you real comfortable on bikes i would say its up to you (actually more up to your parents) keep it safe and gl.

kouki240
There definitely is a manual for motorcycles, its sitting in my room. Just never bothered to open it up. And I got my licence last August, and at no point was I ever questioned about not being 18. Registries didn't say anything, the tester didn't say anything.

And I misunderstood you when you said learners is a bitch. Sure, you are supposed to be followed around by someone but very few people actually listen to that. I just practiced on roads near my place where the only person I could harm was myself.

anschutz_93
fair enough there is a manual but is it any different than the regular manual for class 7 with just a couple points on bike safety added? maybe the place you got tested was just slack, here in the park to get my class 5 i had to bring 3 peices of gov. id :dunno:

kouki240
The manual has a lot of the same basic info you would find in the regular drivers manual, but has bike specific stuff like where you should ride in the lane, how to properly use your brakes, etc. Anyone who has been riding dirtbikes for most of their lives should be able to pass it easily without looking at the manual.

That page is for GDL. If you have a full-on car licence (non-learners), you don't go through GDL for bikes.

I double checked today. The lady at the registries showed me a book stating that with my gdl class 5 I was allowed to ride a bike as long as there was someone with a full bike license with me. She probably thought i was retarted but I asked three times to make sure on this but then why did freinds of mine write a test for a bike learners license but the dmv tells me i dont need to?

Weird. First province I've ever heard of that doesn't need a learner's permit.

http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/mv/operator.cfm

Class 5 Licence permits an operator to drive:
-a two axle single motor vehicle, excluding a motorcycle.
-a two axle motor vehicle towing a trailer with one or more axles, if the trailer is not equipped with airbrakes.
-a recreational vehicle or any combination of a recreational vehicle and a trailer, if the trailer has not more than two axles and is not equipped with airbrakes.
-a moped.
-Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 type vehicles, for learning only.

Why did your friends do it? Beats me. Maybe they're dumb. Maybe they had a GDL and not a full licence. I dunno.
