timing chain on a 240 - Click HERE for Original Thread

70newport
So im looking at buying a new car and found a 240 that says "runs good but needs new timing chain"????? how can an engine run good if it needs a new timing chain and if it can how hard is a new timing chain on those cars to do?

thanks,
Gary

Could be the timing chain guide. If it's that, than its no problem. Just toss it out. But if it really is the timing chain, than it's not exactly easy.

k so not to sound stupid but what shoudl i be looking or listening for to tell if i actually do need to replace it? and any idea how much that would cost if i need to get it replaced professionally?

If its coming from the top its probably the guide. If its coming from random areas than its probably the chain. Only way to be sure is pull off the valve cover.

A dealer will charge you about $1200. But if you want an exact quote call a shop!

Ok thanks for the help.

Maybe hes just going by the rule of thumb that a timing belt should be changed every 100 000kms. I dunno what it is for a timing chain though? If your buying a 3000 dollar 240 its not really worth it to replace a timing chain for 1500 bones. Better off swapping in a new motor.
