is there a demand for sheet metal workers right now? - Click HERE for Original Thread

ive been working at my current job for well over a year and have more then enough hours to go to school with for my first and second year. in the department im working in, i have the option of going to school for carpentry or sheet metal. at this point in time, i doubt ill want to work carpentry as im not really that well suited for that type of work. i have some interest in sheet metal, but not much at all to a point where im considering starting something new. i dont mind the work im doing right now bashing tin every now and then, but im at a point where i need to either continue on with what im doing, or start something new.

im not quite sure what id like to do. i can settle for a sheet metal trade, but the pay isnt as good as what i originally thought it was going to be which was around the $30/hour area, not the $22/hour area.

is there such a surplus of sheet metal workers that there is no real premium being paid out like to something with a welding ticket or something?

i'm a sheet metal journeyman. there definately is a shortage of ticketed sheet metal journeyman. i have had no problems being employed full time in bc and now in alberta for my 10 years in the trade. i think the reason your finding the wage low compared to welders is that their are more welding jobs having to do with the oil industry in alberta. i would think that as a fresh journeyman your wage should be between $26-$28 with $30+ as you get a bit more experience under your belt. you can also do piece work(residential) which is great money, but it will only last as long as they are building houses around here at breakneck speeds.

Yes.

I read that sheet metal workers and glaziers have had the highest increase in income over the last year. No doubt due to shortages and high demand.
