At 18 are you really an Adult? - Click HERE for Original Thread

theStartingLine
Supposedly at 18 we are supposed to become adults according to society, but do people really consider us Adults or still just kids.

Just seeing what people here think.

I am 19 and I feel that people still think I am a kid and that I am not an adult so they don't have to listen to me. I encountered this at my job today so I just had to blow off some steam.
Thanks

Kyle

generally still kids I believe is the common perception, it really depends on how you carry yourself. I if you act like a punk kid and you are 23 I am still going to call you a kid if you are 17 and use your head more often than not I would probably refer to you as an adult

buzzed
kyle dont sweat it i am 28
and still get the hes a kid attitude from
tons of customers....until your old and grey your
always gonna be a kid to someone

theStartingLine
Y eah that is about what I thought ;)

redbaron303
haha Kyle, you child! Time to grow up.... B) j/k

What happened at work today??? Where are you working now???

theStartingLine
I am still working at S.A.M. an elementary school good money and I like kids so. I am a parking lot attendant so I direct cars and help them if they need anything and keep the parking lot safe. Which means having only one entrance and one exit. Although people try to go out the entrance during specified times when they are not allowed to go out.
So this one parent is trying to go out the entrance and I tell him to go around the other way and so he calls me over to tell me why he should be able to go out this way. But I tell him it is for the safety of the children and school rules and then he tells me it is illegal to have a sign up that says " No Exit between 08:30 - 09:15 and 15:30 - 16:00" because the city of St. Albert has a Stop sign there and so he says to take down the stop sign. Anyway it was solved when the Principal and Vice Prinicipal came over and talked to him. Anyway I just felt that he thought he could pick a fight with me because I only looked like I was a "kid". This is not the only time I have felt that I have not been treated with the respect an adult should get.

I am done my rant now. :D

ChromeDragon
That's a tough situation man, but basically all you can do is tell them that if they exit that way the school will have to take it up with him. If he doesn't follow the rules how does he expect other parents to? And wouldn't he feel like shit if another parent doing the same thing ran over his child.

Some people can't be rationalized with, in that case just try to be the bigger person.

writing tickets always helps :)

but sometimes it CAN get annoying when cocky little kids who work in/with officials go on powertrips

No I'm not saying you're a cocky kid.

It sucks to have what happened to you happen, I know where you're coming from. But think of it this way, at least the principal/vice-principal came & backed you up

Better than having some dad step all over you & shit

He was just grumpy cuz if he had only chosen Trojan over President's Choice condoms...he wouldn't be driving a minivan filled with a bunch of annoying lil brats

I dealt with many parents that wouldn't respect a "kids" decision when I was reffing hockey for 5 years. I knew my shit and was a great ref, there's a reason I was reffing junior games when I wasn't even old enough to play them yet. I just loved shutting parents/coaches/players down. On three occasions I quoted a rule and tossed the rulebook at a parent to confirm it, it's great to see them shutup after reading it! The best thing you can do is be assertive and let them know that you're in control, I was attacked on several occasions, but I kept my shit together and dealt with it. Several times it was with kids being hurt and parents thinking that someone else was at fault, on each occasion the child had fallen under their own power. The other was with ejecting a player during a tournament in Enoch, when the player was ejected, the father went out to his truck to grab his shotgun, walked into the arena and put a round into the arena ceiling. In the first situations I told the coach to remove the parent or the team would forfeit the game, in the latter we went straight for the ref room and called the cops.

This was a little pointless, and I'm just rambling like a fool, but I do have a point. So long as you show that you're in control and know what you're talking about, you will get respect from rational people.

That's halarious Terry....

And Kyle has PMS.... wow he is more of a woman than Kaylan... hahahahahahahahahahhaahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
ha! j/k

And I also have to agree w/ Terry. It gets really annoying when some kid goes on a power trip (kid being anyone of us under 50 that has any sort of life other than watchin grandkids and playing bingo). I find that young cops, being probably 19-25? are always on a power trip, especially when they pull people over who are driving cars worth more than their yearly salary!!!! That pisses me off. Or when your at a restaurant, fast food or not, and the server doesn't listen very well... maybe I'm just getting old!

Just don't take life to serious kyle, or you'll never get out alive! Brush him off, and use your power to deal with him but don't stoop to his level and try to be pushy, etc... :)

I think someone already mentioned this, but you'll only get as much respect from "older" ppl as you show them.... and even then it's tough! :(
