window tint ticket - Click HERE for Original Thread

ptemomo
Yesterday i drove trought a speed trap operation a block away from the house. One of the super officer who obviously take is job at heart jump in front of me and wave me to stop. Since i wasnt speeding i was wondering what hell was wrong.... He then proceed to tell me that my tint on my fronyt window is illegal...go figure. It was well worth risking is life for... Anyway, here my questions. I had these window tinted by Dodge when i bought the car in Montreal where they are perfectly legal. I understand the law here makes them illegal, but do i have a chance fighting the tickets since they were legal when done? I know its a long shot, but since im not planning to take the tint off i would like to know. And what is the law say about a car driving trought alberta coming from a place where tint is legal? do you still get a ticket? Thanks for the advices...

your car is registered here... since you live here now: you'll have to live by the local rules. no tint allowed on front doors.

arabian_ryda
is the car still registered with ontario plates? ontario drivers licence address?

I thought factory tint was ok? its just the aftermarket that isnt:confused:

bakerrrtsi
no man i was told no tint film anyything is legal in alberta
the cop i got said that even the clear uv film on the side windows is illegal.....:dunno: yeah cause thatttt makes sense

It's to prevent decapitation when/if you're ever t-boned apparently. Because the glass stays stuck to the film and it can chop your head off, I never thought of that, but apparently that is why front windows are not to be tinted. You can save yourself, but not the passengers in the back of your 4-door car, fuck 'em  Found this out the other day :) Am rather proud of myself.

oh yeah? you got some proof, because that sounds like bs to me...When the the window has tint it holds it together so no glass shards will cut u up in a collision. Depending on the speed of the collision, most of the time the window stays intact within the frame.

Enough of the debates! We get it, you disagree with tint laws. That doesn't help the OP at all.

ptemomo: No. That's not a valid argument. I don't think it will give you any edge at all.

but if it is the glass itself that is tinted and not a film overlay, I thought that was ok?

yes.. if it's actually smoked color glass.. no film or anything like that your fine. The law specifically states:
quote:

69(1) A person shall not install, replace or cover the window glazing in a windshield or in a left or right side window of a motor vehicle that is beside or forward of the driver with a transparent, translucent or opaque material.

(2) A person shall not install, replace or cover the rear window glazing in a motor vehicle with a transparent, translucent or opaque material unless the motor vehicle has outside rear view mirrors on both the left and right that comply with section 72(2).

(3) A person shall not install, replace or cover the window glazing in a motor vehicle with a material that reflects the headlamps of approaching vehicles into the eyes of the driver of another vehicle.

(4) A person shall not install, replace or cover the window glazing in a motor vehicle with a material that reflects sunlight into the eyes of the driver of another vehicle.

(5) A person may replace the window glazing installed by the manufacturer of a motor vehicle with the same type of glazing.

(6) A person may apply clear untinted frost shields to a window of a motor vehicle only if they do not impair the view through the window by discolouring, scratching or damaging the glazing.

(7) A person may apply stickers to the window of a motor vehicle only if they do not limit the driver’s field of vision or otherwise impair the safe operation of the motor vehicle.

I work at a pimp my ride shop where we have to know the tint laws and as far as I've ever been taught, any factory tint is legal, you just can't tint after factory in the front.

haha this topic has come up so many times and no matter what people generally lose. I suggest just pay the ticket and get it over with.. If your vehicle is registered to Alberta tint on the front windows is illegal period. If you want to fight it go on ahead but the ticket isn't that much. Correct me if I'm wrong but its something like 150?

Blackout-spec
generally if i see a cop and think im going to get a ticket for them being tinted, i roll down my front windows. no tickets so far.

RoB
$58 bucks a window. I got tired of the hassle, but i DO miss my tinted fronts. :(

Weird...you have to know the tint laws...but you don't.

Check the links section and read the Vehicle Equipment Regulations: you cannot place any film on your front windows. Whether it's the factory or not. If the factory smokes the windows, fine. Heck, you can even do that aftermarket if you can manage it. But you cannot have a film.

Also, if the OP is concerned about the Officer's life and safety, then he shouldn't have his front windows tinted.
