Other Company Phone to Telus Account - Click HERE for Original Thread

Mustard
So i have to keep my Telus account for another 1.5 years for some certain reasons... don't ask i just do. It's not just a contract thing.

HOWEVER, my phone is DEAD and i need a new one.
Everything telus has sucks, and i want something from another company.

Now i KNOW Rogers phones are out of the question, but what about Bell?

Can someone please summerize who uses the GSM and CDMA networks so i can figure out compatability?

thanx!

I'm curious to know as well. :dunno:

compatibility is only one issue in this problem, and not being cdma is just the small part.

The biggest issue with using a phone cdma(from another netowrk etc) other then the fact its impossible. Is the fact that your esn will not be in telus' system.

If your esn is not in their system believe me your not going to get it added. Better people have tried(telus managers etc).

The reason you can do it on gsm is becaue its not comletley esn based its smart card based. All carrier info is contained on the smart(or sim card as its called in this application).

Now if you did have a way to swap your esn on a phone with one in telus' system then it could be possible. The only way I have ever even heard of it being done was swapping(or just convincing them that your phone is an older analog one) it with an older anolog phone that they have no way of checkin in their system anymore. A big problem with this method though is that you will only have analog service and no use of texts etc. basically only services you will get are ones that were available at the time when telus had analog service.

if you want to know more I suggest you look at howardforums for all your phone questions there are a lot of techs and such there.

Its too bad North America is a million years behind the rest of the world with their overpriced mobile rates and "locked" phones.

Not to mention the "new phones" here are old tech by the time they get to the public.

You know you can use a JDM phone on the Rogers GSM network right? I kept my mobile from Asia as a backup phone here. I think it was $50 bucks for the chip from Rogers and $20 bucks a month or something.

Back in the day it was just a reprogramming fee, but according to hacman that a thing of the past.

Alright.. heres how it is.

Anyways, Rogers is on different technology than telus and bell.
Rogers is on GSM, Telus and Bell CDMA.

The Rogers network is considered a 'world network' because about 80% of the world runs on the technology we do. Telus and Bell on the other hand, 16% approx of the world runs on that. . . So pretty much Canada and the US haha.

When you buy a phone from a company, it is usually locked to that company. You can get phones unlocked to run with different companies, but they have to be on the same technology. So you pretty much can't bring a phone from Europe etc to Canada and use it on Bell or Telus, as it woudl run on GSM, same as Rogers. Any phone that takes a Sim Card, you would be able to use on Rogers, but you would need it unlocked. All you do is pop a programmed sim card into it from the company, and the phone works, as the sim carries plan information etc on it.

There is a way to use Bell on Telus, and visa versa I believe, though I don't know how to do it.

Like he said, check out howardforums.com

Oh and a Rogers chip is 25 bucks.

** Buy out your Telus contract - 20 bucks a month - 20 x18 months - 360 bucks. That way your done your contract, and you can go to Rogers, and get a cheap phone on a 3 year. Your also eligible to upgrade every year, and the network is alot better.
