What is the story about neon lights on your washer jets? Are they legal? - Click HERE for Original Thread

*ride*on*
I bought some jets for my car and they have neon lights to illuminate the night.
Is it legal for them to be on as long as the car has its headlights on?
or should i set them so they are activated when i spray the fluid?

They're illegal period. Even if you never turn them on, even if they're only on when the car isn't moving, none of that matters.

Try doing a search, the topic of lights has been covered a ton of times.

Now now.. he can have them mounted to his car.. it's just illegal turn them on :) I had a pair on one of my old cars, but only cause they looked chrome and blended in with my hood, where as the stock black ones stood out like a sore thumb.

I turn them on once(switch was under the hood) and I got pulled over.. got threatend with a nice stunting fine and demerits.. so i popped the hood and turned them off (cops thought I ripped the wiring out) so I was let go with a warning... never had a prob with them just sitting there on the hood(not turned on of course)

BLOCKER
You CAN have them on your car. however you can not operate your vehicle on a "highway" with the lights illuminated. however, if you are parked, ie/ parking lot at united cycle, you can turn them on.

The law doesn't say they can't be on, the law says they can't be installed.

I don't tell people what they might be able to get away with, I tell them what's legal or not. And even if he never turns them on, or only turns them on in parking lots, or in his barn, or whatever, they're still illegal to have installed.

Care to quote the section of the regs it states that?

It's in several locations. Here's a couple from the VER:

4(1) The following standards respecting lamps on vehicles are adopted and apply to a light or lamp incorporated in or attached to a vehicle

(4) A person shall not drive or operate a vehicle that has a coloured lamp unless the lamp is required or allowed by this Regulation.

Neither place says anything about it being lit, simply that the vehicle cannot have it.

oHHHHhhhhhh I fergot about that wording.

Good point.. I shoulda remembered that...

Now, I think if you run the LED pissers for the chrome look, and the wires are snipped.. then they prolly won't do anything to ya. But you can get chrome pissers without the lights...

And more often than not, what you can get away with and what the law says are 2 completely different issues. You can get away with lots of illegal things even if the officer knows about it most times.

section 4 of VER states:
(4) A person shall not drive or operate a vehicle that has a coloured lamp unless the lamp is required or allowed by this Regulation.

VER (vehicle equipment regs) reffers to the TSA (Traffic Safety Act)which applies to Highways and not private property. Now the section does not stay the lights can not be installed. This is however a grey area, if the lamp is install but not operating there is no evidence of and offence and therefor no lawful purpose for a stop (in relation to an unauthorized coloured lamp). If the lamp is illuminated on private property it falls outside the "juristiction" of the TSA.

As most laws, they are written in such a fashion that they are left wide open to interpretation.

dtjohnst, in my opinion is has interpreted this section as the lights are not to be installed. I have interpreted this section as not to be illuminated.

this is not to say however that at 3 o'clock in the morning you may get a police officer who writes the ticked because he interprets it as installed. The final interpretation is always left up to a judge.

From a working knowledge of the law, if your coloured winsheild washer nosles are not illuminated, you likley will not get stopped for that offence.

I try to resist "interpreting" what it might possibly mean and go with what it literally says. And it says your vehicle can't have coloured lamps.

You're right. Likely one won't get stopped if they aren't lit. In fact, if they aren't lit, how will anyone know they're even lights? My experience with the law says that even if the judge interprets it to mean "installed" whether lit or not, and even if the crown interprets it that way as well, there's a good chance any ticket written would be tossed if you were issued the fine while they were unlit. Some things are often seen as not worth wasting the court's time for.

In Leduc/Nisku however, you might be screwed if dragonlady sinks her nails into the ticket.

BLOCKER
Kinda like wasting time on this thead for a $57.00 ticket.

Is it fair to say if you modify your car, lamps exhuast, ect... there is always a possiblity for a ticket...

do your research and deterimne what you are willing to take a chance on and if it is worth it.

aarrgghh
Well if the VER is correct there's a simple solution. Use a white light LED and thus the bulb is not 'colored'.
