Is it just me or are kids my age these days getting extremely greedy or snobby on what they expect for a first car?
I'm not sure what everyone else on this forum had as their first car but it just seems that everyone wants a "sick" car as their first. They see the odd kid get a really nice car as his first and then they expect to have one that can compare to that.. A first car is not supposed to be flashy and expensive in my mind. It is supposed to be your first step towards some sort of independence and to get you around.
I'm 17 and I drive a 1988 Corolla. I got this car as a gift from my Great Grandma when I was 16 and I was ecstatic I had a vehicle to my name. I thought it was the best first vehicle I could have gotten. It now stands at 71XXXkm on the tach and is in next to mint condition.
I don't want to sound like a whiney bitch or anything but I was just wondering what everyone else had as their first car and what they feel about on this issue. I understand their are certain circumstances that allow you to get a really nice car but there is also the 95% chance you won't or shouldn't.. |

My first car was my '95 Talon that I bought myself at 19. I had it for 3 years, paid for everything myself, and learned a lot about it. It was a great car, and I do miss it, especially when it snows.
I sold it in April '06, and bought my NSX, sight unseen, and love it.
I picked up a Mitsu Galant VR4 in October '06 for a winter car, but man, it was a lemon. I was pretty pissed, since I think the car's so badass. So I sold it to a good buddy for more than I paid for it; what are friends for, right?! :p I have a Caravan for the winter.
Needless to say, owning an NSX at 23 (22 when I got it), I consider myself a lucky guy. |

| The same car I drive today. Actually, I drove the parents 88 mazda 626 for a couple of months, but this was my first and only car, paid for up front, but used of course. Its a true daily driver as its the car ive driven across the country and is also a hell of a car for the winters, where most wont even think of driving their car. And yea, your right, everyone wants big power and fancy cars which, well, as most know, require them to buy and drive a piece of crap for the winter. No offence to them, but honestly, I wouldnt buy a car unless I know id drive it during the winters, here or in the rusty parts of canada like ontario. That all said, kids these days make more money than I ever could imagine, so they always want more and in many cases, mommy and daddy end up paying for the vehicles they want. Thats another thing that always gets on my nerves. But enough of my ranting, good thread |

| My first car was a 1982 Camaro Z28, bought it when I was 18, almost 22 now. Still have it, sitting in my parents garage 500km away from me. In the total time I've owned it I think I might have driven it 2000kms max, only 113k on it neway. I'm just waiting till I have my own house/garage so I can tear it apart and rebuild everything on it. |

| My first car was a 95 talon tsi when I was 18 I worked quite hard for it saving most the money, and getting stellar marks in highschool for my parents to loan me the rest. before that I drove my moms baby blue 97 ford taurus with a bench seat up front. It is an awsome car that is still in the family, great for hauling drunks around, neutral drops, and pickin up the ladies lol. It really regret selling my first couple cars. |

My first car was my old man's 84 Cressida. I loved that thing. I owned it less than 30 days before I wrote it off.
Next car was a 92 Sentra XE Base Model, had that a few years, wrote that off too!
In between I owned a 95 Civic Hatchback which I modded a bit and traded almost straight across for a 91Supra Turbo (which I still have) and a 97 Avalon that replaced the Sentra.

My first car was a 1970 Datsun 510. 2 door, 4 speed. I hated that car at first because it looked like a little grandma car but it was fun to drive. I sold it for $200 when I was 19.... Man I wish I still had that car seeing what people do to them.
Second car was a 1985 turbo LeBaron, got me back and forth to college.
I'm 26 now and have had no less than 20 cars and trucks.... I'm down to a V-8 fiero and my GTR for my fun cars. |

Drove my parents Explorer/Truck untill I bought my GTR in the spring. I'm glad I did that instead of buying an 88 civic when I turned 17. Yeah, I wanted a nice car for my first car, but I saved fucking hard and I earned it.

I couldn't wipe that shit-eating grin off my face untill about a week later when the clutch died, haha  It's all good though, instead of being pissed it's broken I see it as a chance to get to work on it and learn a lot more about my car. |

I got my first car when I was 17, it was a 94 Honda Civic, I rolled it 2 years later while avoiding a deer. Still have it, it's now my racecar that a friend and I fixed, caged, and did pretty well with so far.
The cars have gone as follows since 2002:
1. 94 Honda Civic
2. 89 Dodge Ram 150
3. 95 Chrysler Cirrus
4. 95 Honda Civic
5. 89 Mazda 626 GT
6. 89 Honda CRX
7. 91 Toyota MR2
8. 91 CRX SiR
9. 89 Dodge Ram 150
10. 90 Fairlady Z TT
11. 91 Skyline GTR
12. 98 Dodge Ram 1500
13. 86 Mazda RX-7 Base - best car I've ever owned
That's not counting the 5 or 6 cars I drove in the interim between other cars, or the ... 11 cars I've either parted / stripped or sold as racecars / given to friends. Not bad for being 22.... I think I have a problem. :D |

| My first car is my current winter beater. 1988 toyota tercel. yes there was a time i thought it was cool then i started driving real cars and discovered how much of a joke it was. I was 15 when i bought the car for $350 from a friend. as much as it sucks, i'm glad i've owned it because it tought me a lot about cars (rebuilt the engine, bodywork, wiring etc.) in between that and my skyline i had a 1988 caravan (beige with wood panelling aka my big woodie) i used that to carry my band equipment around when i was in high school or when the tercel was getting fixed. bought my skyline last summer and its coming to my grave with me. next i plan on getting an Audi A4 as a daily driver. |

I bought a 1987 VW Jetta TDI with 400k when I was 15 (for a dollar), and drove that until I was 17. The thing was insanely slow, blew smoke like a sonuvabitch, but it was cheap as can be and always got me around.
Then I bought an '88 RX7 as a daily driver for school (didn't even know what the hell it was) and went bombing down the old train tracks with the VW until it died.
After blowing up the FC twice in one summer (second time was a retarded mistake), and falling in love with rotary engines, I sold it and bought my CDM FD @ 20 years of age.
Along with the FD I also bought a 1995 Chevy S-10 for a winter vehicle. |

Hmm, my cars go as follows
Age 16-17 1993 Buick Lesabre (I acually really miss that car)
Age 17-18 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Great car for the winter/ski trips but needed like 2k in work so sold it)
Age 18- Present 1996 BMW 328i
I grew up with all my freinds getting denalis and BMWs bought for them, and I had my shitty lesabre.
I have bought all my cars myself, and now I finally have a BMW too :)
And let me tell you that you take alot more pride in your vehicle if you buy it urself. My freinds nice cars have all gone to shit, since there mommy and daddys just pay to fix it anyways. |

But when grade 11 came around I was Ballin lol. BEST PART WAS, I did it all my self, never got a coin from Mom and Dad. Not that they didn't want to help but simply couldn't afford it. Actually, I enjoy fixing my car myself at the shop (Bavaria). I had alot of fun those first 4 months I had with the e30, just working on it to get it mechanicly sound. I had some help with a few things, but most of the stuff I did myself and with my own money.
And I take pride in that. One of the shop managers was surprised at how much of the mechanical work I was doing on the e30, with so little help from the techs - Just cause a lot of teens don't know how to do it themselves. |

I'm with those who had a crap car in high school.
My first car was a f**king PINK!! yup thats right.. pink Taurus that I bought off my parents for $1.00. It was brown, but faded to all hell from the sun, thus.. pink. It needed new motor mounts and water pump, so they gave it to me. 6 months later, Tranny blew, locking it in 3rd. A wrecker paid me $1000 for it, which I turned around and bought an 88 Sprint.
Sprint went through 2 motors and one tranny. When the Sprint needed a motor (usually blowing blue), I'd drive it to the wrecker, pick up the engine myself, throw it in the hatch, and then go home and install it with a couple friends. Man that car was easy to work on. Transmission case got punctured and drained all the gear oil out of it (I was attempting to off-road the car) and it seized up by the time I got it home one night.
I must admit though.... both those cars were a lot of fun. The taurus could fit 9 people if you tried, and the sprint was pretty much a demolition car. |

I see to many kids getting some 1500 dollar pos and throwing some rims on it and a fartcan. everyone looks at it and says wtf but to me they took a POS that many probably do not care about and to them its there world freedom at the age of 16 was/is a sweet thing. now the kids who have parents go out and buy them a new mustang. (one girl in my class had one and she bagged the shit out of it 2005 gt).
My father was never going to give me a car for my first vehicle. I got my truck 92 f-150 it has a few pro's and con's.(he didnt give it to me either I payed half) I still have it and I love it even more then when I first got it and I have put some time and money into it. it will never see the 12 second mark that I thought it would. hell it will never see 14's. it will remain my daily driver for quite a few years yet.

I agree. The only reason I got my parents rusted hulk for a dollar was because it needed about $1000.00 in work, and it was sitting uninsured in their driveway. They both had other cars. So I fixed it and it was mine. I had to pay for the repairs, the insurance, the gas, the tickets etc....
To this day I think I have some sort of sense when it comes to the value of earning a dollar. The kids that get it for free learn nothing. |

| ReasonOne |
My first car was a very rusty '76 Toyota Corolla SR5 hatchback purchased for the grand sum of $75. I was 11 years old.
The owner was on my paper route. It was sitting for months in his back yard without any takers. I used to pass by it every day, dreaming about the luxury of car ownership. I spent weeks bugging my dad to teach me how to drive. My father, being a licenced wholesaler at the time said the only way he was going to let me practice was 1) When I turned 15 and 2) When I had come up with the cash to but a car myself. I wasn't getting any handouts from my parents.
So I did what any enterprising kid would do. I saved some of my paper route money for a month and when I had racked up $75 I showed up on the guys doorstep. He seemed desperate to get rid of it and gladly took the money no questions asked. He tossed me the keys and told me to get it out of the yard by the end of the night. My first drive was just about the most painful experience I have ever endured. I had NO driving experience before this point, and I was thoroughly bewildered by the 5-speed manual transmission and the manual choke. I drove it the 10 blocks home taking the back alleyways. It took over 3 gruelling hours.
So I get it home and on the second day I let my 2 brothers and one sister in on my little secret. One of my brothers informs me that I can't drive without a licence and that I need a licence plate. No problem - I take the plate off the front of one of Dad's cars and place it on the rear of mine. My brothers sit with me on one 20 ft drive and stop me. They take the time to FINALLY show me how to drive stick. How I drove it listening to the insane howl of the clutch without crashing into something was a miracle. It took two weeks of constant practice until I was finally comfortable enough to drive properly.
By this time I am so full of myself I start driving it the 6 blocks to school. I start charging my friends $1 for a ride there and $1 back (girls always rode for free - they would usually give a kiss as thanks). I parked on the street facing away from the teacher's lot to avoid detection. At night, my brothers would use my car to practice all sorts of irresponsible stunts (I fastidiously took notes whenever they took the wheel). Every 2 weeks one of my older brothers would gas up the car and charge me $5 to do it. I was in heaven!
It took just over 2 months for my parents to figure it out (just a few weeks shy of my 12th birthday). Needless to say, they were FURIOUS. My dad put the car up for sale immediately. Even my brothers and sister were teary-eyed when "The Green Machine" as it was affectionately called was sold a few days later for $375. The day after Dad sold my car he pulled me aside.
I got all the speeches about driving being a responsibility and not a right, so on and so forth. I respond that I was very responsible with my car. I show him a booklet noting all my passengers and the fees I earned giving them lifts to school. He then proceeds to lose it on the spot. He takes the booklet away from me and grounds me for a month.
A month rolls around and he pulls me aside again. We drive down to the local Canada Trust and we open up a bank account. He deposits $300 and hands me $75. He proceeds to ask me if I could find another car for that cheap. I tell him no problem. Three weeks later I stumble on a 78,000 mile '73 Toyota Corolla with the 2 speed "Toyoglide" transmission for $50. He then began to slowly teach me about how to run a car business like his. Every time I found a car he would sell it through his business, deposit the profit in my account and give me back $75 for the next purchase. I picked up more business sense as a kid working with my father than most other people have at 25. And it didn't even seem like work either.
I kept that Corolla for years before finally selling it to Jack Heninger. Man do I miss those days......... |

Now I have my e36, and I love it. Many people are quite surprised to see a 17 year old driving a '95 325i...
lol. I had an 00 civic.. totalled it (at 40km.hr) it was an actual accident lol.
Bought a white winter beater crx.. Put a 300 into it and sold it for a 1000 profit..
Now I have a flat black crx and an 03 jetta 1.8t... I paid half of the jetta (6,500) and bought the crx myself... I sold dirt bikes and junk too... |

| My first.vehicle was an '89 Nissan Pathfinder that lasted me almost 8 years before I just recently got my 04 Audi S4. I am 23 and I think working 11hr days 10 days in a row I deserve a nice car. No one but me has paid a dime for either of my vehicles and no one but me ever will. Some time coming up I will get a 'project car' I think it'll be an 04 or 05 M3 or an 07 335i.One of the things that sucks about driving a nice car while you're 'young' is I know everyone who sees me in it says to themselves 'spoiled rich kids, his parents paid for that'. |

my first car was an 89 240.
i paid for it with the money ive earned.
ive learned alot by working on it.
its now my winter beater and i own a 180 for this summer.
but i know what you mean about kids wanting a car that is rediculously out of their driving capacity as their 1st car. |

lol since this thread is officially resurrected I might as well join in the fun.
My first car @16 was a 1986 chrysler Lebaron 2.2L N/A *FIRST YEAR OF FUEL INJECTION* 3spd-automatic /w vynil package (very desirable). It probably made a good 75 whp at 5000rpm, and I cant remember exactly but I think ~300k on the clock. It featured a 10W oem sound system, A/C (which broke) and 195/75/14 all season rubber.
It was a great first car, the only maintenance it needed for the year I had it was 4 breaks and 2 oil changes. It was a sweet little car, FF, K-car design and built like a tank.
I had a lot of fun with this car, I remember one of my richer friends lived in a newer acreage subdivision with really wide roads. It had just snowed 20cm of that heavy wet snow so I took buddy out before work and "drifted" the whole developement. Well I was just fucking around and didn't expect to actually drift I didn't know how to toss the cars weight around to slide so all I was doing was understeering all over the place. Well then the last sharp turn approaching buddies house at 40km/hr+ the rear end finally cut loose and I jumped the curb backwards, smashed through a big pile of snow pushing it all back onto his driveway and then came to a stop backed into another pile of snow up to my rear glass. It was pretty sweet!
I still have the car but now its semi-perminently parked, I will probably never need it again :( |

| my first car was my rex, unfortunately. i pooched it but still wanna rebuild. i realized that i should have gotten a beater as a first car. i don't like when kids get nice cars for the first it's mostly jealousy. I know a kid who's parent won the lottery so he got an 07 escape for his first car of course the thing was FULLy loaded. Then his work truck he got 8 months later was a 2003 gmc half ton nevada edition. but i have a little respect for that because he hasn't destroyed either one. |

think of it this way
if you had kids and you won the lottery
wouldnt you spoil the them as well? lol |

| well for the first bit i drove my parents old 89 pontiac bonneville. decided i wanted to have my own car so i saved and decided to buy a 91 toyota soarer. loved that car but on a friday the 13th the rear wheels caught some gravel and hit a curb then the rear end slid into a tree. after selling it i went back to the bonneville till transmission dropped then i bought my 98 ford sho with some help from my parents. liked the car but i love my rhd so i just recently bought my 91 toyota aristo. i to agree that kids that are just given new cars dont respect them and i know a few people that have written them off and parents yet again buy them another one. i respect the people that have bought all there shit themselves you appreciate it allot more. only reason my parents helped me with the ford sho was because i was fucked over after my soarer crashed and im grateful that they were willing to help and treated that car like gold. |

First car was a 91 nissan nx, and I am fucking glad it was not a nice car, since I smoked a pole with it. Still have it because I know the car I have now will be in the shop for a bit.
Current car is a 1992 mitsubishi evolution, just got it, and I have lots of plans for it.
Car after that, I think I'm gonna spoil myself, and buy a new-2years old car, fully loaded etc. that I will have for atleast 5 years. |

To this day I have never owned a better car than my first car.
My first car was a Bright Red 1988 Chrysler Lebaron Convertible. Loaded to the nuts and had the most comfortable leather seats I've EVER sat in. Digital dash and all the gadgets.
Paid $800 bucks for it, had been in an accident and needed front end and paint. $1800 later and a LOT of hard work, I had a BRIGHT red convertible, not my choice of color, but I didn't care, It was my first car!!
I had the convertible now I needed my license.
Studied for the learners, got it. Practiced driving every chance I could, Passed the road test. Got my license in gr 12 and after that, Top Down everyday. Chicks loved it, made them wild.
Soon after working and saving I decided to upgrade to something with less Km's, by now the Red Baron had 288***km.
Gave my mom the car, a gift for my parents saving up for my education. My family still has the car and my mom drives it in the summer time with these big ugly sunglasses haha.
I just recently bought a '03 Dodge Neon with 87***km and I still think about the great times I had in high school with it.
But ya I hate how these days kids are getting mommy and daddy to buy them cars. I had to spend my hard earned dollars on the car, insurance, maintenance and prayed to god nothing bad happened because I could not afford an accident. It teaches you to value what you have and to take good care of your car when it's your ass on the line, not daddy's wallet. |

i would be one of the lucky few 17 year olds to have a very good car as a starter, and an awesome car as a second.
i started off with a 03 civic, and occasionally switched with my dad's 95 accord...then he got an IS250 and i had some fun with that...and now i drive an acura rdx...so rock on for me! |

First car is a green 1995 mustang...
I was looking at a lot of shit boxes but my dad found the mustang for sale in the edmonton journal, and my mom went and took a look at it before I even could, and put a deposit down on it for me, because she was determined for me to get it (and she likes mustangs).
At home I have a 1971 Fiat 850 Sport Coupe sitting around waiting for a restoration, hence my signature. I'm hoping to get it to look like that red one. I know I have posted it before in the General Auto Discussion (iirc). |

Nope. Chrysler had the 2.2/2.5 turbos. Ford had the 2.3.
Anyway, my first car was a white, with rust spots, 5-dr hatch '91 Subaru Justy. 73 horses and an ECVT. Believe it or not, I had a lot of fun in that thing. It was a 4X4 (50:50) so it looked like a top on snowy afternoons. Lots of times pulling really risky stunts on logging roads. And I bought it from my parents for $750, but had to spend $800 getting the 3-cyl rebuilt before I could drive it. |

Got ya'll beat...
My first car was a 1982 LADA 1500s... not a Niva, but a car... rwd 1.5L 4cyl, 4spd, first gear was shot... top speed on 87 fuel - 100km/h with 91 fule 110km/h
But pull the head rests out of the front seats, slide them forward and fully recline, then flip the rear seat back forward and you have a bed.. seriously it was an actual feature.. It didn't have a spare tire it came with a tool kit to take the rubber off the rim and patch it.
My second car was a 93 Swift GS(this was a wierd GS... it was like somebody took a GT and did a GL motor swap.. but it was factory, had the GT suspension/brakes/body kit/etc) A friend owed me money so he paid me back with the car... then I moved to a...
86Ram D50... fun little truck..
Then to a 83 Tercel 4dr, then to a 83 Tercel 3 door hatch sr5
Then to a 02 Neon Le, then a 83 Dodge D50 4x4 Turbo diesel... then to a 86 carolla sr5(had this one a week), then to my fifth ave....
course that's not counting the wife's cars... |

| My first car is the 2008 Accord EX-L. I only received my learners when I turned 18, and my license this past summer. It may seem somewhat extreme for a first car; however, considering that I'm paying for 90% of it myself, I think it's more than understandable that I am entitled to purchase whatever car I choose. I accumulated the money from working vigorously over the years and luckily I've won a few scholarships in my time to fund law school, so that it becomes significantly easier to finance the vehicle. |

^^^ Good for you and your hard work, but I whould cry if I was 18 and I smashed up a brand new Accord.

| ty for your concern lolz, I'm actually 21 now and have been driving since I was 16, so I should be ok, pending the plethora of people that I have to consistently dodge and predict their every move. Maybe I should just kit my car with the same system as KITT. |
