| Hey guys. I was just wondering what would pound harder? An enclosed sub box with only ports seperating the sub and the outside of the box or "free lancing" subs. By that I mean subs in fiberglass for example with the sub exposed? If you don't know what I mean, just ask me to clear it up a bit. Thanks. |

I assume you mean a bandpass, and "Free Air" subs?
bandpass is much more efficient and will be louder.

Check the specs for your sub. Rockford subs come with a booklet, giving all the dimentions of enclosures.
bandpass - hard to build correct (to get the right sound)
sealed - tight punchy bass
ported - lound boomy bass (when built to spec)
I'd go with a ported enclosure. Bandpasses are a bitch to build correctly, and most pre-fabbed enclosures suck. |

if you tend to beat the shit out of your subs you will hear distortion less in the bandpass and ported boxes.. sealed boxes are usually used for sound q applications..

The biggest problem with prebuilt bandpasses is that the mfg's put way too much porting in the enclosure. I plug one of the ports on my single 10 and she pounds pretty nice!

 Well the best box for a sub to if you want POUNDING! is a ported box. For sound quality it's gotta me sealed.
Those boxes that expose the sub or whatever that dont have ports exposed are sealed boxes. Sometimes for custom esthetics people hide the ports.
I'd say stick with a sealed box since the only time your gonna really pound it is friday and saturday nights the other days you'd like to enjoy your music. |

my ma audio sub was the opposite sealed it sounded like shit so i ported it and now it's way better and LOUDER,probably box dimensions were wrong for the sub |

it all depends on if the enclosure was made for the sub.
For you guys that said you pluged up your ports, It was probably way too much port for the specific sub. your best bet is to always have an enclosure that has the correct internal volume. Its the easiest to do that with a sealed box. Most subs call for around 1 cubic foot, and thats what most generic boxes are... so if you're going with a pre-fabbed box, sealed boxes sound the best |

Sealed boxes are less effecient than bandpass or ported boxes.. So it will pound more :)
Myself I prefer the sound of a sealed box.. and I can pound the shit out of them because its harder to cause physical damage to the speakers from bottoming out.. I havent owned a ported/bandpass box yet, because I have been space limited in all the vehicles that Ive had larger stereos in..
also, some subs are only meant for sealed boxes.. my BA isnt recomended for ported/bandpass use.. only tiny sealed boxes..
I think on MTX's website under "education" you can read about the different boxes and their advantages/disadvantages... its pretty interesting, but somewhat dry if your into that kinda thing :)
