The Edmonton Z Car Club, Wild Rose Miata Club, Edmonton BMW Club and Edmonton Porsche Club are having another go at a post season Stratotech Road Course Day on October 13th (Saturday).
We have rented the track for the day and will be running a school on the track. Cars will be grouped into about 5 per group and we can run spaced out on the track with the lead car having one of our club instructors driving or as a passenger (no passing). We should be able to easily get in 3 to 5 sets of 5 hot laps in the day depending on the number of cars. I've done this before at Stratotech and its a total blast. If you want to run on a road course this year in Edmonton, nows your chance.
Click here for more information on the track and directions to it. The bathroom and stands will be open for us, but the consession is closed post season so bring lunch and anything else you would need for a full day outside as we are a good distance from anything.
Due to the late date we will be deciding on weather on the day at the track (unless there is snow on the ground that morning). The plan is to call it off if the track is too slippery for saftey, but we may run in a light rain if its otherwise ok.
We're looking for volunteers to setup the track.
Times:
9:00 am: track setup.
9:30 am: teching starts.
10:00 am: drivers meeting.
Aim to be there by 9:30am. A meet and drive out from a north east Edmonton location may be done if enough poeple are interested.
The cost will be a maximum of $100, this will go down as we get more cars. Final amount will be decided on the day and can be paid in cash at the track. This event is open to all club members and guests.
The rules for teching and helmets etc, are the same as our AutoCross events, and all exhausts must be street legal.
To register, please email your name and car year, model info to zcar@fluidlife.com. |

Do we have at least 5 from the Z club yet Jeff?
You & I, and I'm assuming Mahesh and Rob would probably be likely as well. Was there anyone else? |
|
|
| MixManMash |
| Yup. I e-mailed earlier. I am definitely in. |
|
|
| aarrgghh |
| I've got only 3 emails. Mahesh and Rob from the Zcar club are in (as well as myself). Dan with the M3 will be comming too. Are you in Inzane? |

YES!! Do you even have to ask? ;)
BTW, is your friend slotted under the BMW club or the Z Club? If we have a limited number of slots allocated for each club, Z Club members should get priority for the Z Club spots.
However you are the organizer so I suppose you can do whatever you want. :p |

I dunno. Stuff just seems to pop up and I can't get out to one. And the next one, I'm in a curling bonspiel all weekend. Damn! I guess next season.
I am looking forward to Stratotech though. Hopefully the weather holds. |

If all of the people who are wanting to be in would email me (email address in the first post) that would be great as I'm trying to assemble a list.
We don't really have a per club limit. I'll check if he's in the BMW club so I know but we can eaisly run around 36 cars and if we get close we'll have to limit by club/guest. |

Jeff,
Let me know who's in so far from the WRMC. Any numbers yet from the BMW and Porsche clubs?
Richard
Prez, WRMC |

|
| aarrgghh |
We've got 12 so far. Here's the break down on clubs:
ZCar 4
PCA 1
BMW 1 (sort of, the M3 I'm not sure he's in the club)
WRMC 5
Other 1 (blue u-built from last year). |
|
|
| dc2696 |
| Aslong as Im not stuck in the bush/break my car this saturday at strato Ill be out. |
|
|
| MX5 Miata Guy |
Jeff,
I believe that a few more WRMC members have committed now...plus Dean (former member) above. I've also sent a note to my lawyer, who's got a new M6 (former long-time road racer) as he was anxious to come out last year. You may hear from him. |

Well I got another PCA email yesterday so now there's 2. I also got another WRMC member yesterday but not Dean's above (to register you need to email the link in the first post), so now we have 6 from the WRMC (7 assuming Dean's email is comming). I missed Rob on my count yesterday as the response was in the email about the web page so we have our 5 Z car members. That brings us to 15 (16 with Dean) and two weeks to go. According to Peter there's a BMW school in Calgary on the same day and a PCA autocross at Namao the next so that might explain the turnout.
We have the room for 5-15 more cars. |
|
|
| Inzane |
Well, at least we're at the point where the per-person cost can start dipping below $100. If it was going to cost $150 or more right now I would probably drop out, to be honest.
BTW, who's the fabulous five?
Jeff
Jason
Rob
Mahesh
and...
Ron W.?
Wait... Don B. (member "Blue") said he was in on page 1. Did he confirm?
Perhaps Ron is a maybe.
I know Gord is out. What about Edwin, Ashwin, Shaun H., Marty S., John O., Tim, Roy, etc....? |

Don't count on it necessarily. There will be some noobs out there, so safety and maximum course speed will be considered.
In prior planning discussions we talked about augmenting the track layout with the odd extra chicane here or there to slow things down at crucial spots.
Richard (MX-5 Miata Guy) may want to comment further. |
|
|
| aarrgghh |
The EZCC list currently is:
Don Bridgewater
Jason Kelly
Jeff Keen
Mahesh Upadhyay
Rob, K
Grace I don't have an email from you. Can you try again? |
|
|
| aarrgghh |
I'd like to keep the track as clear as we can based on conditions of the day and driver experience. At the very least we plan on marking braking zone (3, 2, 1 cones) and apex and possibly exit points. If we need to slow the track down due to speed on the back straight or other factors, that's probably where we'll add something.
I've got several caution flags and a checkered flag to signal caution and end of the current groups run (we'll probably have a cool down lap after the last lap and then pull into the pit area). |
|
|
| MX5 Miata Guy |
| So now you're wanting us to bring cones? You'll have to decide, and inform us, which may take some logistics. It's not like Miatas have large trunks...not like Z's!!! |

Good plan.
That worked well with the SVT club and there was no need to slow it down.....but making drivers aware of Apex points and braking distances allowed them to be more cautious and out of trouble (to an extent).
but obviously people pushed it.....but that is unavoidable....
P.S.... When and where do we pay? |
|
|
| Inzane |
Rich - the cones were YOUR idea originally.
Alex - pay at the event. Because we're into the off-season I believe Jeff's track deposit is refundable if we have to cancel due to weather. I imagine the per-person price will be finalized that morning (oct 13th). |
|

| As previously posted, yup, I'm still in. I assume that if the weather sucks we can pull out? |

Sidebar question Don...
What's your screenname based on? Since neither of your Zs are blue, its obviously not that.
Your favorite color?
You're depressed?
Blue balls?
You like that song from years ago called "blue" (I forget the lyrics, something about living in a blue house with a blue car and a blue dog, etc.)?
You stopped breathing?
..
j/k ;) :p |
|
|
| Blue |
Ya, I should change that. It's a long story going back to my art college days. It was a nickname (and nothing to do with blue balls thank god), but there is only one left of my friends that actually calls me that anymore. Somehow it kinda stuck as a user name I use here and there.
Good theories though J! |

Last year, and everybody poo-poohed it. |

| We'd like the cones to mark the brake, entry, apex and exit of the corners. Everyone poo-poohed the slowing down on the track part. Who normally has and/or brings out the cones? I'll come and get some if needed. |

So am I hearing that you wont be placing any cones ON the course itself........... unless warranted.
:blue: |
|
|
| aarrgghh |
I'd like not to place cones on the track. My next preference would be to place a set of straight through gates that get slightly narrower in the brake zone(s) to encourage people to slow down in time.
We're currently have around 17-18 cars and have room for around 30 max, so there's room. If we fill up we'll place club members first, however it doesn't look like we'll be full. |

The PCA guys have not gotten the memo. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of us who would like to come out. There's nothing listed for an oct 13th autocross on the website... so maybe that memo hasn't come across my desk either.
You can sign me up as long as there isn't actually a PCA autocross on that day that I haven't heard about. Now it's just a matter of ice tires, summer tires or r-compounds...

Hmm... Jeff has been in contact with Peter Spencer all along. I know Peter himself is not able to attend but I would've thought he'd have passed on all the appropriate info by now. |

Maybe your club could fire an email over to Bill McCay who is our autocross director. http://pol.pca.org/autocross.asp
He can confirm or deny any autocross dates as well as sending a fan out to the autocrossers. |

I'm out.
Boss wanted me back at 2:00 (which was barely doable) and now we have a full morning booked at the store.
Customer insists on a delivery Saturday AM... can't get out of it. (as it is my deal and my customer). Absolutely no way around it.
I'm not so much pissed as severely depressed.

Bummer. Oh well, at least you'll be making some money.
BTW, with all these saturdays you have to work, do you normally get a weekday off, or are you typically working 6 days a week? |
|
|
| aarrgghh |
Just a reminder for everyone that tomorrows the day. Be there at 9:30am. If the weather is bad we'll be making the call at the track as its a ways out of the city and it may clear up/warm up and we have the track for the day (so come out unless there's 3 inches of snow!). Current forecast is sunny high 12, 30% chance of showers.
We have 34 members and guests (one or two people bailed out) and I'll be emailing 2 of the 4 people on stand-by to show up to give us 6 groups of 6 cars. If everyone shows up the cost will be $50, please bring exact change.
Instructors please be there for 9:00am to assist in track/logistics planning setup. |
