Body kits - worth it? - Click HERE for Original Thread

captain_amazing
Been thinking about a bodykit for my saturn, but obviously Edmonton roads are terrible. Is it really worth the money? I saw a prelude scraping his black widow back end on every bump on the henday. I died a little inside.

diesekiel
I would die a little inside if you put a body kit on your Saturn...

anschutz_93
long answere short YES you really need a body kit for your saturn i added a body kit to my last car and it added 30pounds df on my front and along with my spoiler i subracted 80pounds off the rear vehicle weight... can you say drift?

you asked a totally opinionated question so you wont be able to get an honest answer. if you get a body kit chances are you will wreak it in winter and there is a high probablily everyone will think you are a tool :D . the only reason i would put a bodykit on is that for some reason the stock bumper/lip wouldnt allow mounting of something like a fmic, or complications to an engine swap etc.... imho getting a body kit for no reason other than to have a body kit is (dare i say) rice.

You forgot to inform this gentleman that these kits increase horsepower, around 5-10hp per each bumper piece, and about 10hp with both skirts, so anywhere from 20-30hp gains w/ a full body kit!! And I haven't even mentioned the 16" spoiler!

I think it depends on the kit. The backyard special bumpers for EK Civics are gorgeous. The saleen/roush stuff for 99-04 mustangs looks awesome too. I'm a large fan of the do-luck R32 GTR kits as well

Not so much the wing, but the front and rear bumpers look amazing. It totally depends on the style, all that shogun/erebuni shit looks like absolute fucking garbage, but there is some clean and great looking stuff out there.

Blackout-spec
a body kit can look good if its not way overdone. a nice subtle body kit can look really good on some cars. i would prefer a lip kit because usually they look better and you can take them off in the winter to get a bit more ground clearance.

tho_chi
If you get one I agree with Blackout-spec, get one that adds lines to your car, not a boxy POS then makes you look like your trying to hard

anschutz_93
true dat... it depends on the kit, but as a generalization i would still have to say that unless the kit has a function i still wouldnt find it very appealing. for example look at the GTR posted, the front has been molded to allow maximum airflow to a rediculously large fmic. to tell you the truth i like most of the veilside collection as well but alot of there kits are functional as well as stylish like the Fortune kit for the FD's, which allows you to run wider tires/rims.

However i will stand by the fact that no N/A fwd car deserves a body kit as diesekiel pointed out the hp gains that one experiances even when combined with NOS stickers is not enough to make a car any faster once you take into acount the weight of said bodykit.

Damn, we forgot to mention those before as well. Those stickers are the ultimo mod.

Are you fucking serious?

diesekiel
hahahahahahaha

captain_amazing
Ok - I'll get a little more specific - Fiberglass (cuz I don't have a lot of money) R34 front, bomber sideskirts, and black widow rear on a 98 saturn sl1 ss. Keep in mind the saturn's all I got to work with. But thanks for the opinions so far.

tho_chi

diesekiel
That's gonna look mo' fuckin' tizzight man.... Damn.

would i lie to you?

EK9Hatch
I wouldn't do it. For a few reasons...like you said, the roads here are bad, and you WILL scrape...and let me tell you, its a shitty feeling when you hear your freshly painted bumper scrape.

Second, generally body kits turn a decent car to a douche bag car. Most are ugly, poorly made and fit like shit. There is no sense spending money on making your car look WORSE!

Ebay body kits FTW

tho_chi
i prefer custom made ones:dunno:

I personally think the backyard special bumper for EK's is fucking hot.

EK9Hatch
I had a Authentic OEM JDM CTR Lip kit on the Hatch and thought it looked good.

Body kits too often take away from the car instead of adding to it (I found the CTR Lip kit added, not took away from the car)

Jamie

captain_amazing
I agree with Jamie's long post where he got owned by the ad. I saw a MR2 lose his front end at the Denny's at 170 st. He hooked it over the parking curb while parking, then when he backed up the whole thing detatched. The dude was seriously pissed.

tho_chi
That would've sucked but it was his fault for the park job in the first place..

Kiddo
bodykit is a bodykit, if it suits you and you like it, I say buy it, don't listen to all the haters and their opinions that it is rice and what not. Not everyone that drives a car wants to push 500whp, some actually care about looking good driving around in their day to day cars. As for edmonton roads it will be fine if you don't slam your car to the ground and get pretty good at dodging pot holes.

240sex
if you are going to get a body kit dont get something that fricken has a hard on in every inch like so ...

hard on = sticks out

body kits only look good if they flow with the car and dont have random lumps (lumps and humps are only good on women not cars)

something like this is not bad...

Blackout-spec
exactly my point^

POX
fiberglass + ETown Roads = broken bumpers and side skirts

That kit looks so good on your civic, did they ever find it?

EK9Hatch
Nope :(

4thGenLude
i think 90% of body kits are fucking ugly and ridiculous
a lip kit that doesn't have extreme lines or sticks out 3 feet from the car looks good in my opinion.

x2

imo the coolest kits are the ones that the factory designs eg. rx-8 aero kit, or the g35 aero kit, or the saturn "redline" body additions (i think they are diff, but i truly know very little about domestic tuners) that way it doesnt give you the hideous ricer quality like most kits can.
subtle=cool, performance=cool, big brakes=cool, no performance and a flashy kit=hurtin

but the more shitty kits out there just make my car relatively cooler in comparison..... so giver!!

damm thats a hot EK

SkiTLz
Theres nothing wrong with kits.. Im personally changing my Front/Rear bumpers and side skirts.

The only problem is with people picking ugly ebay cheap shit.. But real kits like amuse, chargespeed, ings, vertex yada yada are often functional, subtle and complement the lines of the car..

In other words.. Dont blame body kits cause so many people have zero fuckin style or taste. Its not the kits fault.

SUGA.KANE
how long are you going to keep your saturn, why waste money on a kit if you plan on upgrading anyways save the money

on that note.. Think of resale.. Alot harder to sell a kited car than stock.

captain_amazing
Well I plan to keep my saturn going for at least 5 more years. (it's a 98) I just don't have a ton of money to blow on an expensive car like some people do. I've only had the saturn since i think January. I don't got much, but I take pride in what I DO have.

More power to ya i say.. Dont rice it out and your an ok guy in my book.. Not everyone has money.. Gets old listening to people tell you to buy a new car instead of working with what you got.

Your car will have no where near enough power to need functionality of a body kit for down force.

700-800HP cars don't even need that.

All body kits are for are for looks.

Functional.. Weather it helps you or not is irrelevant.. Its still functional with some R&D behind it.. Its not the kits fault your car isn't fast enough to use its potential.

Theres alot of aftermarket bumpers for my car that GREATLY increase cooling.

EDISKRAD EHT
Yeah but there's some very f'n sexy kits for the 350Z. It's one of the few cars that actually has kits to make it look better.

Id agree with that.. Depends on the car I guess.. Theres big aftermarket backing for the Z too so lots of choices.

I hope you weren't directing that at my Civic.

I do agree with better cooling...I wasn't really thinking about that :p I was more thinking about down force, but you have a good point about cooling.

Jamie

Neo-Blue99GASE
For edmonton, I really wouldnt recommend the kit. I can understand that you want to upgrade the looks of your car and make it different, but at most id only recommend a lip kit, the sc/t package on a GA. Add in the fact that most kits dont fit properly and made of fiberglass, it just ends up leading to trouble.

70newport
IMO! if u need to get the car re-painted anyways then going to a body kit isnt a bad idea just cuz if you get the right one they do look good and you can get the benefits of downforce and cooling but IMO unless your actually going to be racing and really need the little bit of performance you actually get then you may as well save the money for a couple years down the road when you need to re-paint anyways and do it then. assuming you want to keep the car that long.

this is all just my opinion though.

captain_amazing
Word.

Mikeman
If its fiberglass, the answer is no dont get.

NightmareMX6
If your car is not very low you should be ok for a kit. Just not for winter lol.

BTW is that you Rob?

Tech2
Post up pics of your kit ideas.

I'd suggest saving the money or upgrading your stereo or something instead though. That's just me till a picture of a sweet kitted saturn changes my mind.
