Shredded my tire on HWY2 - Click HERE for Original Thread

AdamP
I was coming down to the Airport, doing the standard 130km/h. I was just leaving that bumpy patch right before Nisku when the car pulled nicely to the left and next thing I know the whole left side of the car just drops as some sparks and smoke come pouring out.

It looked pretty shitty. Left a nice trail for about 60m or so as I pulled the car to the side. Cracked my sideskirt quite nicely as well:

For some reason the rad decided to explode on the hot side.

I had to wait for my pops to bring my race jack and one of my winter tires cause I lost the crank to the scissor jack. He then left me and went to pick up the person that I missed from the airport.

I contemplated getting it towed but there is like a $250 fee for out of town (like 3km out of city limits) and the tow itself would have been about $150. So fuck having a $400 tow... I called Fadi (who is awesome)... he would have towed it for $100 on a flatbed but he was booked until tommorow morning.

After that, the Flying J Shell was about 400m away so I just drove it over there over there. I jacked up the car and took a look. For the life of me I couldn't find the spot where the rad exploded. All the hoses were fine. I figure a piece of the tread must have shot up into there and ripped / knocked some hose loose.

At the same time there was this other guy that rolled by with a Sil40 (he still had the KA). Pretty weird.
LOL... I like this first picture:

Anyhow, I got jewed on some zipties ($4) and 12 pack of water ($6) and filled up the reserve tank. I idled the car for a bit and the reserve level wasn't going down. In the end, I just ended up driving the car back the 15-20km. The car was running perfect, temperature was fine and the rad reserve tank level never went down.

So now, I'm rolling like this. Ballin!!! (My winter rims + Aurora winter tires)

So... the moral of the story is that the people at the flying J Shell charge ludicrous prices, the towing companies charge and unreal amount of money (except Fadi) and most importantly not buy old tires from Japan. These were Falken Azenis ST-115 that were probably like 5+ years old but had good tread.

I thought i recognized your car on the side of the highway today. That sucks man, I was in a 5 ton with a load of golf carts on and in the right lane or I would've stopped to check and see if you needed help. Glad to see the car is still running fine.

tho_chi
and I've seen the Sil40 around, looks quite nice:thumbup:

stealth
Shitty to see. I got towed once from Castrol for about 80-90 bucks. Wasn't too bad. I think it was RightWay towing or some thing like that. (Silver Truck with Red writing).

Arabian_Ryda and I managed to talk him down a little bit.

Blackout-spec
holy shit, you got lucky. How bad is the rim? looks like you need to sand down the edge and have it repainted.

i just recently blew out a tire on the highway. luckily i was more fortunate and the tire didnt peal away from the sidewall. When i took the tire in to get it looked at, they said the treads were ready to split from the sidewall. So i ended up throwing a brand new tire w/ 95% of the treads left on it.

good thing your car still runs good, and that this happened at the end of the summer and not the beginning.

EK9Hatch
Holy shit...that tire is toast!

Sorry to hear this dude.

Shitty deal dude. But at least things somewhat worked out for you....it always could have been worse. Fadi is an awesome guy, reasonable and nice and has helped us out in some tight spots, but yeah hes usually super busy.

So everyone is a jew because you're too cheap?:dunno:

Tech2
Tows are a great reason to go AMA. I made good use of my membership when my alternator went and stranded me just outside of red deer. Tow price= free.

$4.59 for like 16 zipties... LMAO... I get like 100 for like $1.50 at Princess Auto.
$6.99 for a 12-pack of 500mL waters... LMAO...
$250 fee for driving 5km out of city limits (that doesn't include a tow - I called about 3 places)... those 5km = $250??!?!

I understand that's a convenience store and whatnot but you need to be serious here... the prices were ludicrous. I'll paid the $10 for the zipties and water but fuck a $400 tow. Sure, I can afford the $400 but to me it's an utter waste to spend it on a tow. For that price I can buy a Fluidyne or a couple new tires.

There's a difference between being cheap and being reasonable.

To illustrate, take your tail lights for instance... The Koukis are $400 but you somehow opted to get some $100 eBay lights and paint them red. Cheap or reasonable?

Same story here, why would I pay $400 for a tow when Fadi can do it for $100 (except that he was booked).

Invalid Zero
I happen to like my painted ebay lights more than koukis. Not everyone is a JDM whore.

I would have done the exact same thing you did. Just fix it myself. But it's no reason to call people jews because a tow is expensive.

AdamP
Ok, agreed. I take that comment back.

Invalid Zero
PS I'm not a jew either.

shawley
reminds me of what happened to the nsx

thats when the nsx also spenta night at my house and went up for sale for $10,000 but no one wanted it for that much

Godzilla
i had the exact same scenerio this summer, except i was stuck outside of cold lake. 300+km drive on a handy spare sucks!

It was more exciting when my whole wheel fell off on the highway.

But that picture does seem very familiar....

Adam your post is starting to scare me now... I'm running on these old ass Yokohama tires and the sidewalls are cracked and have probably been on my car for ages plus they have 5% tread in the rear and huge cracks in between the treads too on all 4. Maybe I'll just wait till I blow one or two like you and then I have a reason to buy new rims/tires! Hopefully it won't be on the highway though.

If your tires are really that old there probably a good chance it'll happen again. Are you going to get new ones?

ChromeDragon
WTF towing company would charge that bullshit? Or were you trying to get a flatbed?

There's no reason to need a flatbed. Yes your tire is fucked, but it will still roll on the rears. They could even dolly those if it's a big concern.

Fazda
welcome to the world of blown tires at least you didn't bend a rim like me. im rolling on one winter to.. haha we can be buddies..

jzz30tt
Hahaha i was too, swapped the fronts to the rears and put the stockers on the front, btw Fazda, go to Egberts. 98 dollars of labour 113 dollars total to fix my rim. And they were done half a day after i dropped it off.

JustinL
What size tire and wheel was that? Your rears look pretty stretched, and I'm wondering if that might have contributed to premature failure of the sidewall.

Cyanide Ride
Luckily you didn't lose control, I've seen your car around, it's a black beauty!.

Most likely what happened is the previous owner of the tires drove around with low tire pressure causing the sides to wear prematurely on on the inside.

Weak sidewalls+ highway speeds=danger will robinson!.

You said it best, never buy or run old tires unless you can see what they look like inside!.

AdamP
The tires were properly inflated, and balanced. I suppose they were just old. Their use in the past also probably had something to do with it but when I looked at the tire before I got it put on the rim it seemed fine.

I'm running a bit of negative camber on the fronts so it like to bite into the runs/depressions left in the road by semi trailers. That one stretch just by Nisku is absolutely ridiculous in that respect.

I don't think I could have done much. I slowed down when I felt the car pulling strong to the left and I'm thinking "this is not good ". I am thinking my wheel is going to fall off. Two seconds later it blows... I think I still travelled a good 60m (you can somewhat see the tracks from the rim on the road in the second picture) before I pulled over to the left side (right would have been the best but I couldn't really turn the wheel that way).

As for the stretch... all of the rims are 8.5" all around (same offset of +27). The rears are the Potenza RE01s 225/R50s are actually a little wider than the rim. They have a bit of a lip guard as well. The fronts seemed ok when I had them off the rim. They were 205/R55s so they were stretched slightly but not by much (the optimal fit for an 8.5" rim would be 215).

fadis towing is awesome

Actually the optimal fit for a 215 is a 7" wheel. And here are the specs for your front tires:

http://www.falkentire.com/st115_sizes.html

The approved rim width for that tire is 5.5"-7.5" with an optimal rim width of 6.5". I'm not saying that that caused the failure, just contributed to it.

Fazda
my tires are definetly stretched on my rims.. could be why i blew. im gonna go with some 255's next time.

~sanj~
aw thats shitty to hear adam
but at least u didnt go veering off the road and cause more damage rite?

i think everyone is rocking the one stock rim

sum immature people at nait shot staples into the side wall of my rear left tire...and being in post secondary i cant afford a new tire...so i rocked the stock for a bit on the rear

then im like screw it, and put all the stock rims on :(

Fazda
shitty dude bust some ass

~sanj~
lol its Nait....not likely am i going to find who did it

Blackout-spec
wow, what tools.

way off topic, but when i was at nait, i would come out after classes and id notice 5-10 cars each day missing plates. its retarded the kind of shit that happens in the parking lots.

friedn00dles
damm lucky things didnt get too bad. heh it still looks great even with 1 wheel different from the others:thumbup:
