how much for a brake conversion? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Mekanik22
Hey guys. I was just wondering how much it would be to convert rear drum brakes to disc brakes? So instead of 2 front disc and 2 rear drum, have all 4 disc. What kind of stuff would be needed? Would I have to replace a whole brake line? I know that it will affect the parking brake, but how would the parking brake work if I changed the rears to discs? Thanks guys.

Ive seen adapter kits for early Novas and Camaros, but nothing for a 90 cavi.. Im sure it wouldnt be too hard to fab up a few adapter plates... Im not even sure your car woudl have the needed bosses to fasten the plates down..

You'd have to take one drum apart and look...

On my car, its a bit easier, I have 4 discs.. Im going to get another set of front calipers and stick'em on the back, because I hate my ebrake so much im just going to remove it :) it is a direct bolt on so, I shouldnt run into any problems, Ill just be ebrakeless..

I've seen used kits for civics go for around $350USD

& that's using USED integra (oem) brakes in good condition

Thus making your vehicle illegal to operate on public roads I believe.

There's a kit for Civics, not sure for Cavs though. Google is my best friend, you might find something.

I am loking at doing a rear brake conversion on my 99 Sunfire GT. I don't know what your bolt pattern is if its 5 on 100 like mine then your in luck. Either pay like $2000 from RK sport or do what I'm doing. Find a wrecked alero or Grand Am GT or GTP and it should be a direct swap. Some guys have done it on jbody.org and have had good luck. Let me know if you find anything else. B)

meh.. I am investigating replacing the horrible ebrake system with something else...

Interesting, I didnt know that aleros, GA, and gtps had the same brake setup as a cavi.. cool

First off you would have to change the Brake Master Cylinder & acquire the Rear Brake System from a newer J-Body. Once you get that, you may be able to adapt it to your present rear suspension using custom/modified spindles.
After you achieve a basic conversion set up, you may want to turn it into a "Big Brake" system like the one's I sell here:
Front 12" Disc
Rear 12" Disc
Slight modifications to your present E-Brake system may be required too.

This isn't for my cavy. It will be on a future car. I don't think I'm going to do anything to my cavy, i'll just use it as a winter beater. But either way, thanks for those replies all!

I guess we all ASSUMED it was for your Cav since your sig doesn't list any other car! But, James is right, if not for the Cav, then for what then? It will make a HUGE difference!

Well I can't be too sure to say yet. But i'm going to try my hardest to buy a 95 civic coupe. After I have the car, I'd like to drop a B16-B18 in there. Now what I REALLY feel stupid about is, the 92-95 civics came with all disc brakes  :pat: :pat: :pat: I should be :slap: ed
