So the power supply on my PC ate it. It's from a 4 year old eMachine so bare with me, it's pretty weaksauce. But I don't want to buy another computer so I need to find a replacement.
It says:
code:
Input: 100-127V~6A, 200-240V~3A 60/50Hz
Output +12V / 13A, -5V / 0.3A
250W MAX +5V / 25A -12V / 0.8A
+3.3V / 20A -5VSB / 2A
+5V & +3.3V 150W MAX
Total current from +5V & +3.3V shall not exceed 27A.
Total current from -5V & -12V shall not exceed 1.2A.
Do I have to find one that matches all of those specs? Apparently 150W is like nothing. Smallest I found so far was 400W at Best Buy. |

best bet is to pull it out and take it to memory express or other comp store and make them test it before buying a new one as well they can recommend the best replacement for your machine
http://www.memoryexpress.com/index....=10832&SID=
that one should do and isn't pretty decently priced.
if you are uncomfortable removing it take the whole tower with you to memory express they have quality techs that can help you out. |

Yeah you don't need to worry about matching the specs exactly just make sure that you get something that at LEAST puts out that same power (250W)
50 bux and 10 minutes of work will get you back up and running. |

So, no dice.
I replaced the power supply with a new one. Nothing!
So I think it's fubar'd for sure. I left the tower at computer trends for a diag.
It's ridiculous, after all is said and done, i bet it's more than half the price of a new, bottom of the barrel machine, that'll still be better than the one I'm trying to fix. |

| if the repair is going to cost you anymore then 200 save up a bit and buy a whole new system, most entry level machines are going in the 400-700 dollar range for a complete system that will likely be a whole lot better then your emachine ever was. |

this isn't true actually, there has been changes in the connections to the motherboard in the last 3 years going from a 20 pin connector to a 24 pin connector now some of the power supplies you can seperate the extra 4 pins and some you can't. so when buying a power supply for an older machine you should be a little more careful to make sure it will work with your board.
Also depending on the manufacturer sometimes they use proprietary form factors on the power supply which prevents the use of standard format ones. |

eMachines are nasty.. a little over a year ago, bout 6 went boom around here, one lucked out and only the power supply popped. Another one the power supply shot flames out the back, took the mobo/ram/modem/video card with it. most the power supply and mobo died.
Most good power supplies with sacrifice themselves and try to save the rest of the system.
Some times you can luck out and find a comparible mobo to drop in, one e-machine I dropped the same chipset mobo, but a newer socket, so new cpu, same type of ram.. fired it up no problem... windows only wanted re-activation, called microsoft, told them what happened.. no probs.. |

Just a note...eMachines are generally made of the cheapest available parts. From what I've read, the power supply tends to spike horrendously on the 5V rail as is dies, blowing the crap out of the motherboard.
If your emachine dies count on it needing power supply and board. If you have one and want it to last, replace the power supply. Good luck and hope you find something that suits your needs. There are lots of people on this board who can help you choose or even help build you a replacement. |

| So, yeah, the doctor said the power supply toasted the mobo. Shweet! Were not sure what computer to buy, but either way, we are not in the market right now because of the funds situation. But when we are in the market, it'll have to be sub-600 bones I think... only time will tell. |
