When does the Henday SE open? - Click HERE for Original Thread

midnite
It's almost ready! Looks like it would be fun to drive on. :D

Prorsumgurl83
mid to late next week. It has to be done by October 26 to avoid contractual penalties, but they are so close to being finished.

midnite
I bet it will be crawling with laser for the first few weeks like the SW section was, as everyone who likes to drive fast will surely be checking it out.

I think that when its done we should do a fast and furious race around the city and see who comes in first:thumbup: . That would be awesome. And of course you have to drift every turn thats a given.

Only if you lead in that fancy FD of yours, Rad.

JustinL
Last I heard, the 23rd was the date.

Invalid Zero
I live north of 23ave and east of 34st so I was all excited to have Henday SE open up. But the 34st overpass is just that, no interchange. So I'll still have to take 50st or 17st to get on it. Although I guess it's not too bad, it'll probably keep traffic down on 34st. :dunno:

2HIGH~PSI
yeah im a little upset my car is done for the winter, i would love to bomb down that (at the posted speed limit) when she's open...i guess i could always get temp insurance for one night :P

Race from McKinney Dr in St.Albert to the Clover bar dump?

Prorsumgurl83
...AHD SE opens the night between October 22 and 23. The NW portion of the ring road opens 2011 and the NE will be at a later date as they are doing it conventionally so it won't be as rushed.

and back!

Confirmed...per a discussion I was having with an Alberta Infrastructure & Transportation employee last week -- it was either Monday, October 22 or Tuesday, October 23...dependant on various politicians' schedules for the opening ceremony.

Now, if only they'd remove the lights on the SW section...but alas, that's still years away...so the elephant races due to truckers lining up two abreast will continue for a while.

Opened yesterday at 9am. I drove it home (westbound) and to work (eastbound) this morning. Very nice...far easier than Whitemud Drive as of late. Despite the longer commute, time was the same, and I was far less stressed. :D

Inzane
SE Anthony Henday ROCKS!!!!

I saved ~15 minutes on my commute yesterday, and about 10 minutes today.

Been practicing your bench racing again Rad?

THUD
I took it in the rig yestaday moring at 6am on the button I started from hiway 14 heading to the westend and was at 156st bridge turning at 6:30.
Was a little bumpy going over calgary trail but it was no stress drive unlike the yellowhead at that hour and only had to stop for those lights way out stoney plain road.

aarrgghh
I've used it both days it was open. What's with the lower limits still on the calgary trail east and highway 14 west overpasses though? For me it's saved around 10 mins each way, but I second the more relaxing, cruise control on the way to work!

TrevorK
Does anyone have a map that shows the Henday?

Being someone who rarely drives in the southside I didn't encounter the years of construction but it sounds like it might be an easy way to me to get to the deep south, as I'm stuck in the north.

Inzane
ads....

I never use cruise control on the commute. There are too many douchebags on our city roads that don't respect the "slower traffic keep right" adage. I find it annoying to have to constantly cancel and re-engage cruise. (HWY 2 to Calgary is bad enough for that).

JustinL
I've been taking it in the mornings too. I start at 127 street and go all the way to yellowhead in the north east. In terms of distance, it's way further for me to get to work, but so much less stop-and-go compared to trying to get straight up through calgary trail and downtown.

aarrgghh
Normally I'd agree with you Inzane on cruse issue. I guess it goes to show how little traffic I'm seeing on the new road. Time will tell though....

Justin we must live quite close as that's my route as well. You're in Rutherford?

Well the stretch of AH from 50st to beyond 17st (eastbound) has been pretty light so far, but once I hit HW 14 (or 216x, whatever its called) going north, traffic goes up bigtime. Its still flowing... but suddenly there's a lot of retards coming/going to/from whitemud, or Sherwood Pk FWY, that can't merge or exit competently which screws it up for everyone. Speeds go up, speeds go down, speeds go up, speeds go down. Too many incidents of "WHY the F#@% are we suddenly going 80??"

dance_of_curse
i was on it saturday night my friends dumb as they were wanted to drive down it i pulled a uturn and was like eff that shiz...but theres a nice lil off road section off the henday:)

An overall map can be seen here on Alberta Infrastructure & Transportation's website: http://www.infratrans.gov.ab.ca/INF...tion/ahdmap.htm

Detail of the SE section can be seen here: http://www.accessroadsedmonton.ca/p...R3wAIRPHOTO.pdf

80...try using Whitemud Drive near the Quesnell bridge...5-10 is more like it some days.

But, the section of Highway 216 that is the east side of Anthony Henday Drive is the ages-old pieces of Highway 14, 14A, and 16X that comprise Alberta's oldest grade-separated interchange -- that being the Salisbury interchange of Sherwood Park Freeway / Wye Road overtop of what is now Highway 216. The speed differential for exiting and merging traffic into the north/south stream of traffic is only part of its inadequacies.

grego
I know what you mean about 14, WHY does everyone drive in the fast lane if thier not going fast? because you have to go left on yellowhead? change lanes when you get there!
/endrant

new henday extension is tits. I work in reddeer, but live in clareview, so my commute in the mornings was treacherous to say the least, sitting in a lineup at 17th and whitemud (why theres not an overpass there i will never understand) then following all the truck traffic down 91st to Ellerslie, took me ~45 minutes to leave edmonton at 7:30-8 am, thast with a stop at tim hortons of course. This morning i was on Qe2 under 20 minutes of leaving the driveway!
