So im pretty new to actually doing mods on turbo engines and am starting to make a project car out of my 92 talon tsi 6bolt with 4 bolt underneath.
is a turbo timer a good place to start?
if so, not brand names as ill do that research afterwards, but what should i be looking for in a turbo timer? any specific features that are actually usefull unlike the 18 color LED screen and stupid stuff you dont need?
any input helps thanks

Basically a turbo timer keeps your engine running for a set period of time after your turned the key to off. Kind of similar to how a car starter works. AFAIK. I have been told the reasoning is that turbos are mainly cooled buy circulating oil through the bearings, and if the engine was turned off while the turbos are still hot, the oil can bake on the bearings and cause premature failure.

If your turbo is water cooled (anti freeze running through it) then no you don't need a turbo timer. The idea behind one is that when the car gets shut off right after a spirited run the turbo is still spinning at a huge rate of speed causing the bearings to coke which will cause premature turbo failure. So if your turbo isn't water cooled just idle the car for a minute before you shut it off and you will be okay.

Allot of money? They are like $150. :dunno:
And I agree with Rad. Waste of money with a water cooled center section. |

It has to do with turbo spinning?
I thought it's the fact that the turbo is hot as fuck and if oil is not circulating through it will just sit in the lines and coke up. After bagging the car for 10 minutes and your turbo is a red-hot cherry the idea is to cool it down before turning the car off. |

The oil in the bearings will coke up because the oil is getting hotter due to there being no oil circulation once the car has been turned off. It has nothing to do with how hot the turbo is. I can take a cold car and rip on it for 10min and shut it down and it will cause coking of the bearings. The heat of the turbo just speeds up the process.

Your turbo is oil/water cooled. IE you do need to allow the car to idle for about 45 seconds after driving.
Weather or not you want to wait in the car, or walk away from you determines if you buy a turbo timer. |

No you don't. Just don't bag the shit out of it for a minute before parking.
Look in the owners manual on any factory turbo car. Does it say anything about sitting there idling? NO, because they are water/oil cooled. |

yeah not a lot of money but some. for me i dont even like spending $50 on something that isnt really going to do anything for me. after knowing better what they are actually for i figure by the time i park, get my school bag or whatever i need out of the car i shoudl be good. not to mention the fact that im all for having fun driving once in a while but i hate driving my cars into the ground.
thanks again minds made up im going to save the money to put toward something more productive.

| I find mine useful.. but my turbine is only oil cooled and i don't like sitting around in my car waiting for it to cool down. |

no need
unless you are shit bagging your car right before you shut it off the oil will already be at a normal range as will the turbo.
i have never heard of anyone killing their turbo due to gumming up from cooked oil. |

Or if you wanna kill two birds with one stone.. Just throw a compustar or viper alarm in.. 9/10 have turbo timer functions.
Standalone turbo timers are a waste of time.. 99% of us have decent alarms.. Just use that timer. |

The Sunvisor on my car has a warning on the back of it. Saying to let the oil cool down.
You guys can do what ever your little hearts desire. |

yeah i have the same warning on mine, just never knew thats all that turbo timers help with i thought they did more
aka me being new to this.
but im cool with waiting 45 seconds cuz really its not that long lol. |

| my cheap car starter in my truck will run for around 1 minute after I get out if I don't press the off button, so I just walk away and it turns itself off. instant turbo timer:) |
|
|

| I usually just let my car idle for around 5-8 mins if I was driving it hard and working the turbo. You can listen to the radio, make a call or have a smoke during that time and it will save you an easy $150-200. |

Do you know how hard that is for me to not do?
I think in the manual of my car it suggests to let the car idle for a min. I will need to check that. My turbo is oil/water cooled. :D
I would go for the turbo timer. If nothing else it is car bling! :D

I like to pull into my parking spot with the wheels spinnin and ebrake locked.. I look cooler that way..
On the plus side.. Its NA. So i just shut her right off, give a quick pose on the bonnet.. And off i go. |

| Well i would put a turbo timer because i wouldn't be happy if my turbo breaks down on me and i don't think anybody would right... but hey my opinion of course . oh and by the way i set it mine for 2 minutes just to be on the safe side . |

| if it breaks it gives you reason to get a bigger one:dunno: |

| ^ so true but i still let mine idle for 2 minutes even if i dont bag it |
