| I'm reading Atkins Diet book and he makes peoepl stay uner 20 grams of bad carbs a day (meaning starchy veggies and refined cerials and grain products like pasta, rice, bread)
But I can get 20 grams of carbs from a glass of OJ or cereal.
Is this a realistic ammount? I think US food triangle recommends 300 grams!
|

| you're thinking of giving this a shot mark? i suggest you read everything you can get your hands on. and to make sure you stay in ketosis you'll need to hit your local drug store and buy keto sticks. in my opinion if you're not sure about your foods i'd stay with the high protein, moderate carb, low fat diet instead.
the atkins diet is kinda the basis of where the many high fat, high protein, low carb diets came from. ppl have successfully used it to lose fat and also to gain lean muscle mass.
if you're serious about giving this a shot i can find out how many calaries of carb, protein, and fat you should aim for. i'll need your weight and going from what i remember you have a somewhat active lifestyle right?
btw... 20 grams of carbs is not right. my guess is about 80 grams plus or minus 15%? you're about 170lbs right?
you also need to have a carb loading day once a week. it's not a free for all where you eat anything and everything... it has to be timed properly and you need to make sure you cut carbs out by a certain time in order to put yourself back into ketosis for the rest of the week. and also most of your carbs while on the high fat, high protein stage is taken right after your workout and first thing in the morning.
i dunno mark... like i said before i'd just stick with the diet you're on now. how is that going anyway? from here on in i think the gains will be slower... but if you stick with it you'll see the body fat reduced... your weight may not show it but that can be due to lean muscle mass increasing from all your activities.
|

| I wans't plannign on going on it, someone at work highly recommended the book and I ended up getting it for Christmas! haha.
Anyhow, I agree with you. I still having my carbs in the morning. Some morning I'll have a high carb lunch (like pho or Beef/VEg on rice or pasta) but today all I had was a sandwich.
At night I'm down to about 10 grams of carbs, mainly from sauces which make the food a little more palatable.
BTW, if I'm cutting out my carbs at night, do I still reach a stage of Ketosis?
Another thing that bothers me about the Atkins diet is that you're allowed things such as mayo, butter, bacon, cheese, all high in fat. What do you think of that? |

| BTW, I'm officiallt 169.6
I'm doing 60 min on the rec. bike each day. A really low setting, where I don't even break a sweat (should I???).
I also do weight every other day in circuit fashion. I went down from 20 reps to 12. By the 3rd set I'm pretty beat! |

| excellent! 60mins with a moderate pace is 100% perfect for your goals. any harder and you will go into a catabolic state where your body will turn to hard earned muscle and break that down for energy. fat burning cardio should always be done at a pace where you can breathe and talk normal. a little sweat is ok but you don't want to be huffing and puffing.
on the high fat foods like cheese, mayo, bacon etc... that's the beauty of ketosis. when your body is depleted in carbs like that fat cannot be stored in your body. you body will turn to all the fat for engery. if i remember correctly your body uses carbs then fat then protein for energy in that order (under typical circumstances). sooo... when you are low in carbs your body will burn the fat intake. that's partly why you can and must stick to the high fat and high protein when on this diet.
i'm pretty sure your body needs to be low in carbs for a longer period than what you are exposed to, to reach ketosis. your book should have the answer? you could check it to be 100% sure.
hmmm... now that i think about... when did you change your circuit training to 12 reps per set? if it's about the same time as when you started to slow down in weight loss well... see where i'm going? that's a good thing though!! you're lowering bodyfat while adding a little more muscle tone to your body.
keep it up mark! |

| Hmmm, you know Sam, you're right on the money with the timing. I've only lost .4 lbs in the last 4 days, but I've been doing less reps, and heavier weights (example, moving from a 15lb dumbell to a 25lbs, but doing 12 reps instead of 20).
I can't tell a diference in the mirror, but I can honestly say I'm a lot more energetic, especailly in the morning!
BTW I looked up how long it takes to get in the state of Ketosis - 48hrs on average to burn all the carbs out of the system according to Atkins.
|
