So I got thinking today....about alcohol and how much people consume.
When do you consider alcohol to be a problem? How much is too much? I know many people that drink every weekend...sometimes both friday and saturday nights.
Whats your view on this?
How much do you drink? How often?

| I enjoy my beer, I mean I really enjoy my beer. In fact with the oilers game on tonight Im gonna go get some beer. But can I say no, sure. Do I always want to say no, No. If your friends drink every weekend and they are post sec students its normal and they will eventually taper off. IF they are over 40 years old, then they got a problem and need to grow up, get a wife! |

I wouldn't call this a problem but it's a situation that I don't support:
When you need/want alcohol so you can have a better time.
If you need a substance to "help" you have a good time because you aren't able to have fun without it, that's pretty damn weak. |

| I usually end up driving to the bar anyways, so i have one or two drinks at most. I'm always worried that i will end up doing something stupid when I drink, so I usually don't drink lots. :dunno: |

It's a problem when it starts impacting your life in a negative way. I'm a Friday/Saturday drinker, and I love mid-week beers, but I'm still active, my house still gets cleaned, I go to work every day, and my social life is still fine.
Until that day:  |

| I drink maybe a beer or two a month. I have had times in the past that I've drank quite a bit, but I grew up. I can't justify dumping money down the drain drinking every weekend. |

You should see some of the fools I work with on the rigs. I have personally seen many of them spend over $3,000 in one weekend at the bars.

I went out last saturday with 3 of my buddies who work on the rigs. They each brought 500 bucks to the bar. Me, being the poor student, brought 20 bucks. I cant even imagine spending 500 bucks on alcohol in one night. :dunno: |

Most I ever spent at the bar was $180 about five years ago, how people can spend $500 I do not understand. I had never tried to get drunk on regular-priced drinks before or since. That was $5 bottles of beer and ginger jacks. That was probably the drunkest I've been where I still remembered the whole night.
I've had two occasions where I don't remember shit and they were both very bad situations and the reason I decided that drinking excessively is just plain stupid. I haven't drank heavily since that $180 night five years ago and the other occasions were years before that. In total I've probably been drunk maybe 10 times in my life.
As for when I consider alcohol a problem though, my friend's ex was a perfect example. I only hung out with her about a half-dozen times in the two years they dated and each time she was drinking and half-cut. That's not strange you say? Two of those times were breakfasts where she was slamming mimosas like no tomorrow.
My friend drank about as often as I did, but after she moved in with him there was a stocked liquor cabinet that was replenished with about 4 or 5 new bottles of hard liquor a week ... but he still didn't drink. She always tried to get him to drink with her so she wouldn't feel like such a loser, but he rarely did.
He finally dumped her after she crashed his truck that he let her take up to Grande Prairie for a couple of months while she worked at another branch office. It wasn't the crashing the truck that did it though. It was when she tried to pocket half of the insurance payout on his truck that he had spent 10 years restoring when he had been paying for everything but gas for the truck. She hadn't put a penny into this thing and tried to take $5k of his money.
Fuck that bitch sucked ass. I guess she's one of the reason I think people that drink all the time are losers. |

But yes, there are some real cowboys out there. I've had some pretty bad drillers ... aka drink with me or your skidded kind of guys. |

Wow...thats impressive! I've been drunk more than that in one week.
Those days are thankfully gone...but as of lately I think I'm going to cut back even more (I usually drink maybe 3 out of 4 weekends)

| i went through the drinking phase briefly, i might average 3-5 beers a month now. after watching my last girlfriend get drunk almost everyweekend and having to take her home not being able to "enjoy her company" at the end of the night, i got kinda turned off by drinking. |

the only time there is a problem with alcohol is when you run out
in all seriousness.. if you are being "responsible" about your alcohol consumption you're fine. but every person has his own limit and tolerance for what "responsible" is. i would say, as long as it doesn't affect your work or personal relationships, enjoy it while you can. |

| midnite |
it's a problem when it interferes with your daily life.
i've done weeks where i've had a drink or two each night after dinner, but i wasn't getting drunk.
i did all the heavy partying around the end of high school.. the kind when you wake up and don't remember the previous night except for pieces, or don't know where you are for a minute.
now i get drunk with friends like once a month, with an occasional drink every few days with dinner. |
|

| ehrgeiz |
I've slowed down on my drinking over the last couple years greatly.
I used be down for the weekends, but honestly the negtive effects of alcohol are just too much. I don't just mean the hangover, but it takes days to get my digestive system back on track and my cardio and conditioning is flucked for a good 2 days. It's just not worth it, besides if I feel the need for some intoxication I'll just smoke some weed. The next morning I could wake up and run a marathon, instead of being hungover and craving Taco Bell.
To answer the OP's question, too much is when it becomes a crutch. |

I consider it a problem when it starts affecting your personal or professional life.
This is also a huge culture question too. There are hardcore Bavarians who drink a case (20) of beer during a normal 8 hour workshift. Kick is, a beer here (Munich) is the size of a pint. So they'll drink 20 pints in the course of 8 hours. They seem to function somewhat normally.
Me, personally, I get fairly tipsy about 2-4 times a week. Usually on a Friday and Saturday. Why? Cause I love beer and I love the socialization aspect -hanging out with some friends over a nice cold beverage. Beer is the German equivalent of the Italy's wine. Coincidentally the culture accepts it too. Booze is also ridiculously cheap here too (less than a buck for a pint-sized bottle of the most delicious, unpasturized beer in the entire world) --> I bolded that part cause I'm still amazed that the traditional (and most popular) breweries here don't posturize their beers -they all have a shelf life of maybe 4 months.
Why not drink water or juice or a soda? Cause the rumors really are true -beer is cheaper than water, soda and juice. Hard to justify a water/soda/juice when beer is cheaper :p :)
The employees at InBev in Munich, they get 3 cases of beer for free A WEEK! I've seen less alcoholics in Munich where booze is such an integral part of the culture than I have in Edmonton (and the population of both cities are almost identical).
I say, as long as you can hold your shit together and it doesn't have any negative impacts on the priorities of your life as a responsibe human being, drink on playa. |

Another interesting thing to think about is some of the drink specials in this city. A few examples would be the 25 cent draft and the 25 cent high balls at Union Hall. The sheer volume of alcohol that one can go through is ridiculous. I was "power drinking" a few months ago at Union...I wanted to drink as many high balls as possible before 10pm (thats when the 25 cent special ends) Long story short, in 25 mins I had 14 high balls.
Needless to say, I didn't make it to closing time (I think I left at about midnight) I haven't done that again thank God.

| Beer and other alcoholic beverages are intoxicating fluids that can lull and numb the brain. While in this state of blissful oblivion, one may and can forget one's obligations. As in the case of Muslims, they are required to pray 5 times a day, and this they cannot do if they get tipsy! |

I usually have 1-2 drinks after every day, and become social 6-7 drinks 2 to 3 times a week. But growing up in an eastern european family, where there is always an open bottle of potato juice on the table, and having drinks early in childhood is the norm, this is acceptable, and I am still able to control myself/stop whenever I need without feeling withdrawls.
Getting drunk, 12+ drinks happens rarely (in my terms) which is about once a month |

Never have completed one drink before. Well maybe a spirit once when I was younger (those .005 % BS), but that doesn't count.
It is a personal choice. But like arabian_ryda said, one of the main reasons is because of religion. You are not supposed to drink because of the affects it can cause on you and the people around you. You are not thinking 100% clear. Also its too fucking expensive. I rather spend that money on other shit.
I have tons of Muslim friends who do, but it is my personal choice not to.
And yes I have smoked cigarettes, and cigars on occasion. :p |

I think that if it controls your life then you have an issue. spending $500.00 at a bar to me is retarded. I would rather invest it, blow that on car parts, or add to my wine collection. But each to their own. :D
People spend their money on various hobbies/ addictions, right or wrong that is not for me to judge.

I used to live on Whyte Ave so it wouldnt be abnormal for me to come home several nights in a row not knowing how I got there.
I really stopped drinking after I had my little boy though, it just didnt make sense to get wasted anymore . If im on nights and im working in my garage I might pick up a 6 pack and down 2-3 but thats about it (it helps with the cold i tellz myself). Once or twice a year we go out camping and get loaded and play with firearms but thats about it. All my friends are having kids as well so I dont even really have anyone to get drunk with.
And I have to deal with drunks every weekend I work so it also puts it off for me to see some people . |
