What was your car epiphany? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm not sure if anyone else out there has had a similar experience to my own, but I was just thinking about this again today and figured I would share and see if I was alone.

Back in high school I used to read lots of different big V8 magazines such as Hot Rod and the like. I was used to seeing big-power big-blocks cranking out 700+ hp, but reading one particular article changed my outlook on how you could make power.

Up to that point it had been all big V8s, that's what I had assumed you needed to make a car fast. This article was about a Grand National T-Type though. It simultaneously opened my eyes to the world of turbocharging and platforms other than the almighty V8. I can't recall the exact details of the article offhand, but the one number that has always stuck with me was 867. 867 hp from a V6? Are you kidding me? That must be a typo? But it wasn't.

It wasn't long after that I began to read more about turbocharging and even began mixing a few import mags into my monthly subscriptions. That was about 13 years ago now and my love of cars, whether it has 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 cylinders arranged in any number of configurations, has only grown.

So please. If any of you had a similar moment please feel free to share it.

I was into domestic muscle as well. My epiphany was driving my bosses 87 944 Turbo across town when I was 16. Completely changed the way I thought about imports. Not just the power, but the nimble handling also.

And it was also the same car I taught myself to drive stick with. Of course I didn't tell him I didn't know how, and I only stalled once.

I don't think I've actually had a car/automotive epiphone yet.. but.. I used to like all cars that either were fast or looked fast. Mustangs are what do it for me now. There is an exception though. Jaguars also do. There are some other European cars that I really like, such as the Weissman MF3, Aston Martin DB9, etc. I'm not that big on Japanese Imports.
They don't do it for me. They aren't bad cars to me by any means. I just find them to be especially annoying when they are turned into rice. The sound is what bothers me the most. For example ... a stock STI or EVO sound doesn't bother me. A honda/nissan/hyundai does bother me. Then again any vehicle with a fart can bothers me.

As a DD I wouldn't mind a Japanese car..... for the better gas mileage. When it gets to performance though, I'd much rather stick to some of the American cars and European cars.

I can say stuff about American cars that doesn't impress me either... they handle like absolute crap.. and the manufacturers are really cheap. For example, my Mustang has the 3.8l V6.. from what? A windstar! They put an open diff into the Mustangs so you get a one wheel spin. Why not put a good T-lok in and let it gain some more traction. Why not put better parts in to start with and make it faster right off the get-go so that they don't get killed by trucks.

BTW, STI is such a bad name for a car.. should have just called it STD to be done with it.

Ummm, it's still an Impreza, it's just a designation for the higher performance model. STi stands for Subaru Technica International, their in-house racing division.

Haha, I can't believe I used Epiphone. Stupid Guitar Hero, I have guitars on my brain!

I was as surprised. But I let it slide. ;)

Yeah, but most people just refer to them as an STI...

I have had that feeling with every single type of car on the planet only furthering my addiction. I'v been threw alot of cars 10 in the last year -.-. But i Stuck with v8's because like you said HUGE horsepower naturaly aspired. Just seamed a smarter move for the cash needed to be spent for the power + i love the look of the 60's/70's

The only thing worst than a riced out import...is a domestic riced out car lol There is a yellow mustang convertible in town thats soooo funny!

As for me, I've always liked imports....back in the day I wanted a EG so bad. Always been a Honda fan....never been into the huge kits or any of that garbage, just clean functional looks.

That being said, I am a car enthusiasts first and foremost. I like everything from a Turbo Honda CRX to a 69 Blown Big Block Camaro.

It wasnt a single car really, it was Gran Turismo 2. That game absolutely opened my eyes to the automotive world. I learned that power isnt just for Ferrari's and Lambo's. Domestics, Euro, Import could all be just as fast or even surpass supercars. That game taught me about what turbo's are, intercoolers, weight reduction, choice of tires you name it. Then with the friendly addition of Google to my life to research the hell out of anything I wasnt familiar with just taught me so much. Like when Gran Turismo 4 came out, I spent the first hour or 2 just browsing at all the cars, looking at the designs, lines, ways to tune, just being in love with the shapes and everything, all before even racing. The game made me appreciate all cars, but it really brought me into the love for imports. The first time I learned what a GTR was, was a pretty special moment.

I got ripped off on 2 JDM imports and it changed my life. I now say fuck old cars unless you're loaded as hell which I am not.

Saving up for something newer, sold in North America, and more reliable.

shortly after i graduated high school (9yrs ago now) i felt like i needed a nicer/faster/cooler car. i was coming form an 86 celica gts rust bucket. the car ran great and had about 300 km's on the clock so i was impressed with my yota.

my first choice was a supra turbo (1987-90 ish), i drove a few and loved the power +rwd, but couldnt really find one in that great of shape. most were starting to rust or burn oil. a good friend who had an 88 mr2 sc suggested i check out a rx-7. i loved the look but didnt know jack about rotaries. either way he and i went to check out this 87 turbo II and as soon as i drove it i had to have it.

i bought it, drove it, learned what not to do with a boosted car (the hard way) , fixed it (thanks conroy), fixed it, fixed it, fixed it, ...... you know how it goes.

long story short, if it hadnt been stolen i would still be driving it and i have a feeling i would of had all of the bugs out by now. but since this car i have basically realized that i need a red/rwd/manual/fun/fast car in my life, currently has a nissan badge and i am kicking myself for storing it 2 weeks ago....as i could still be enjoying

i guess the fc3s was the first stepping stone, and now the 350... i wonder what is next..

At 16 I got a job at Pizza Hut and the manager had a riced out CR-X. Before then I had only played a bit with stereos, I had no real car direction. One day he was showing another employee how to remove the pre-intake air pipe off his Civic to make a louder intake sound and that was my epiphone. Maybe a couple months later I bought a CR-X.

Haha, the epiphany had nothing to do with with a particular car. Just a moment in your life that your perceptions of the vehicle world were shattered.

Shit, back when I was at NAIT I wanted a V6 Cavalier after seeing one lay rubber through first and second. Then for a while I was obsessed with MX6s, I even test drove a few and nearly bought one. But then I came across some old Japanese racing VCDs when I was in Chinatown about six or seven years ago. There were a couple of really early Option racing videos with the AE86. It wasn't long after that I bought my first Corolla.
