Body work Question "Pics included" - Click HERE for Original Thread

maritimer88
Alright guys I posted awhile ago that I picked up a 96 si for fairly cheap with some side end damage. I was wondering if any one could help me out here, i dont know this city well. I dont want to go to some big company that will rape me in charges, is there a small company that does good work but doesnt charge an arm n a leg around here, or is there a back yard guy who wants some extra cash. The biggest question is how much am i looking at here.

Prudz_lude
you cant fix that for cheap. You will have to replace the whole rear quarter panel. Thats about 1000 dollars right there. Plus labour to install, plus paint and labour for paint. My guess is about 2200-2500.

maritimer88
Yea I thought that to... the only thing is I dont even know any body shops around here, what are some good ones that people on here use, obviously not maaco n shit ahha

Ayeso

Its a little bit more difficult then that.

What you'd need to do in a situation where the metal is mangled like that is cut out the rear quarter, reseal and weld it in, use body filler/sanding to smooth it out then respray.

Yeah i understand that but if he bought it like that who cares.. pull out as much as you can, it will have tons of ripples and creases in it, just plaster it with bonder and sand it... no point wasting a ton of money oni t

maritimer88
ahah yea i know its a beater for now, but i might make it a little project. The metal is stretched so it cant be beat out, im just looking for a good body shop around edmonton area to go to, or a back yard place.

GOT BOOST
That'll buff right out. :D

As what has been posted it will cost a fair amount to fix. You might want to check out some smaller boddy shops that have a good reputation.

Mike

maritimer88
lol yea thats what i want to find out, i dont know any shops with good reputations though ahah, i dont even know where even a shop with a bad one is. I just need a few names n ill find out where they are.

I think that's what he's asking. Who knows of a good small body shop?

I used Villiage Auto Body or something like that once for my Corolla, it's located on the same street at the Acura Dealership in the west end (don't know the address off the top of my head), or at least it used to be 5 years ago.

maritimer88
yea thats exactly what im asking, thanks man, if any one else can give me some more names id really appreciate it

I've been able to fix damage like that before by pulling it out and filling it in - and that's obviously the cheapest way. If you are experienced enough you should be able to restore it to the point that it will look good enough that no one will notice.

The correct way is to weld new metal in, however that will be very pricey.

maritimer88
i have around 2 grand to use to fix this, it shouldnt be much if at all more then that should it

kellyk75
Yes it will be more than 2K. I would bet $3500 at a decent place. You have some door damage too, not sure if you can pull it or not.

Might just be the pics though.

maritimer88
Nope no door damage, thats just the light shinning off it. If it was just the back end would 2 grand about do it. or was he talking 3500 for that back end, then an additional charge for the door

Rebound
I had a tiny hairline crack in my front bumper about 2 inches and most shops in Edmonton quoted me $500-600 for repairs/labour/paint. Needless to say I fixed it myself with rubber epoxy, bondo and painted it OEM paint for less than $24.

This job at a shop in Edmonton will be over $3000 for sure...

try franks autobody on the southside. they are a small operation and i have used them a few times, quick service done well and pretty affordable. tell them Greg at Nuline Auto sent you.

Id take off your interior paneling, and pound that out the best you could with a hammer and 2x4 piece of wood, then try and shape it a bit from the outside so atleastthe metal in the area for the trim piece is in decent shape, slober the rest with bondo, then shape it with alot of sanding, and take it to maaco to spray just that area with you doing the prep. shouldnt be more than a couple days work and a few hundred dollars.

kellyk75
^^ Then wait 6 months for the rust to start. It depends if you want it to look good for a short time and save some $$ or do it right and spend a bit more. I would just try to take it to a few places for an estimate, then make a fully informed decision. I would say close to $3000 for the rear quarter...... but you might find a decent place to do it for about $2000. There are lots of shops around. If you take it to a place and it is too much, ask them if they know of anyone who will do it cheaper. They usually will.

If not, get the quarter, do some research and try it yourself at desro's auto. They have air tools (zip disks) and a welder + paint booth. Might be a good learning experience for a beater.

I think as long as the prep is done right and most of the rust is removed it whould not be a problem. Once the rust is there you will never get rid of it, the only way is to replace the metal, but the better the prep, the longer you delay it. and if it is just a winter beater who cares.

I had friend with very similar damage though not quite as extensive on a nissan beater we popped out the panel as best we could. sanded, buffed, and ground out the rust till it was pretty solid metal. Then replaces a little bit of missing metal with fibreglass, then bondoed, did a good sand using a heavy grit to get the shape right moving down to a 600 before applying primer, and giving it a good wet sand and sending it off to maaco and over a year later the only sign of the repair was a slight wave due to are original shaping which is barely noticable, and the wavy quarter from the inside of the car.

costs were 20 for bondo, 15 for sandable primer, 30 for fibreglassing kit, and 500 for painting the entire car. Again it wasnt perfect, but who cares since it wasnt noticable unless you really looked for it, and it was a beater

kellyk75
True, for a beater it might not be a bad option. I am just too picky and wouldn't do it that way myself....... but that's just me.

arabian_ryda
easy fix man. like said above take off the interior panels and ull have full acess to that area. pound it out sand the pant and rust off where u see paint its too low pound that out till u get it all shiney to the metal in all areas. and DONT use a balltip hammer or 2x4 go to priness auto and buy a dolly(curved/straight/angled) and flat face hammer do it write the first time.

get it painted at cosmos for like 200 bucks just make sure its straight and ready for prep.

BRITAIN1.8
Take a rope and tie it through the two holes where the side runners were.. Pul gently till it pops... Then go inside and use the hammer and 2x4 approach... lol. It would probably look decent after minus the flaked paint!

halochassis
Wow I don't know where you guys are at that costs so much for body work... 2500 dollars just to replace a quarter panel is crazy. I have another car, 96 Celica ST for my daily driver and it has frame damage. The last owner spun the car into a telephone pole and hit dead on where my strut mounts up so the wheel sits crooked. I went and got an estimate to replace and repaint, and he's only going to charge me 1700 bucks for the whole deal, and he's got a good rep. Maybe its because it's a small body shop like Can't Stop Spin mentioned...

Okay, what's the name? Is it the Village Auto Body he was talking about?:dunno:

maritimer88
Ya iv seen a couple people say stuff about body shops, or good ones with good names, but they never leave the name of the place there talking about ahaha,, can I get some names with these places

kellyk75
Sorry, I just realized that he is from Southern Oregon. He is talking in general.

FYI Halochassis, we (here in Canada) get raped on anything to do with cars compared with you guys in the states. You name it, parts, autobody, repairs, buying price...... etc.

AuZZZie
Autobody prices in Edmonton are set so high cause people here can't drive for shit.. They know they can charge that all day and theres nothing you can do.

get ur hands on a grinder and a unispotter

halochassis
That sucks about high autobody prices... I'd try to help you guys out with finding some cheap parts, but I don't know what shipping would be. I have a few hookups of my own for discounted parts in the US. Maybe it'd be worth the shipping?

fugumerkur
Hey, have you fixed this yet??

I can't promise anything but I'll talk to the bosses at my shop.

I can use some cash and the extra work never hurts.!

another big thing about it, if you wanted it painted the right way you would have to either paint the whole right side of the car or blend it out.

for financial reasons, when it comes down to paint, I would just paint the rear bumper, the quarter and thats it.

euro_ftw
man, this is gonna coast u alot. i just payed 1700$ to replace my hood , left fender and the raditor support. but it was a bmw.
