How do I get tar off my car!? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Driving home from SEC Cineplex the other night and the only road that was open (from the theater) had a fresh layer of oil/tar on it. Anyways I have splatter marks of this black goop on the bottom panels of my car and I have no idea how to effectively remove this stuff. I have a Motomaster stain remover thats safe on cloth and leather, but I have no idea how it'll effect the clear coat. Any ideas? :dunno:

I used Meguiars paint cleaner for my tar. It works reasonably well.

damn...I thought you were talking about interior tar/sound deadening

I use Tar Remover. It's a chemical specially for that type of thing, it works nicely. But then again, this is at a dealership, so I don't know where you can find it publically. Phone around, you never know....

I got some all over the bottom and side of my ride. Had to scrape it off by hand so as not to damage the paint. :crying:

is it tar or "Fresh Oil" ?
you could try a high pressure washer... like a carcher unit, or a simoniz... 1000psi does wonders!
Dawn also works quite well on oil and tar, but it WILL strip the wax off your car, so you'd probly want to wash the whole car with it and rewax afterwards. If its not enough you can use a metalized foam scraper dealy(gentily) (used to scrape shit of of pots and pans) it will probly not scratch your clear coat.. or if your paranoid, use a bug remover foam (same thing but nylon)..
These things should be enough for ANY stain on the outside of your car.. unless its like "undercoating" in which case your best off to use a linolium knife :)

1000 psi will remove the clear coat, and the paint too if you're not careful.
and about something that will probably not scratch your clearcoat... EVERYTHING scratches clearcoat. EVERYTHING.

1000psi will remove clearcoat and paint if there are any inperfections, like dents or scratches.. so hold the wand a little futher back :)

Damn cheap clearcoat!!! A week after I got my ride I drove out to Sask, and while in Saskatoon took it to a wand wash. 3 5mm pieces fell off. Boy was I pissed! The new car salesperson said, "oh that's how all new cars are, besides it was probably chips from rocks or something". <-- damn shitty new car paint.

'goo gone' works great, canadian tire has it.Don't use brake cleaner,it will eat your paint.WD-40will work, but anything you use wash off after.

Thanks for the great advice guys!
In the end I tried Turtle Wax Tar and Bug Remover and Goo Be Gone Automotive. The Turtle Wax product was alright for removing thin layers of tar. The Goo Be Gone product really did the trick though, dissolving even thick globs of tar after I let it sit for a few minutes. The Goo Be Gone did cost more than the Turtle Wax product however. I guess it all boils down to how much time you want to spend cleaning it! |

Hey guys (and girls) as surprising as this may sound in the past I've used Coca Cola Classic to remove road tar(I guess if it can dissolve a nail left sitting in it it can remove tar(and poosibly your stomach lining)... :o
