Buying from states. - Click HERE for Original Thread

cb7driver
I am planning to buy a B5(97-02) Audi S4 after winter..

i work at the Audi/Volkswagen used dealership and can get vehicles at cost.

My question is would it be advantageous for me to buy a car from the states, or just get Audi to find me one here

does anyone know all the conversions(other than day time running lights) that are needed for when you bring a car over..

just seeking advice, thanks.

Godzilla
on those particualar cars the only thing you need is the DRL's. i'm not sure about the b5's but on the b6 and b7's its just a matter of reprogramming a country code on the ECU.

cb7driver
hmm, well what would you suggest.. in which way do you think it would be more efficient ( low price + good condition)

im not sure what you are asking. if you have the time i'd source one out yourself and fly down to drive it up. otherwise i could cover the whole process on your behalf (of course i there is a fee associated with it)

cb7driver
sorry that last post probably didn't make sense.. what i meant to say was do you think it would be cheaper for me to get one through my dealership or to get one brought up from the states/ bring one up

Godzilla
depending on your cost, i would imagine that it might cost a little more to buy it locally but its a lot easier for you. but it might also be a lot cheaper for you to go out of country

cb7driver
lets say you were to bring one up with decent km's from the states to Edmonton, how much would you expect the price to be(estimate and/or a range)

Godzilla
depending on the milage anywhere from $16-25 thousand

Why don't you price one out yourself from a US dealer? Use Autotrader.com or another site.

Once you have your US price, then start to consider adding in all your extras:
- GST
- Duty ( I assume a S4 is German made ) @ 6.1%
- Exchange rate - Just because the dollar is worth more, doesn't mean after you pay the service charges it still will be
- RIV fees/Air Conditioning Tax
- Cost of DRLs
- Cost of inspections (federal and provincial)
- Potential cost of parts needing replacement (As a provincial inspection, if done properly, is fairly thorough)
- Flight down to US
- Hotel/gas/meals/insurance for drive back
- Your time

Then compare the price of what you can get one at your dealer for (and only you/your co-workers can help with this pricing).

I'm all for going to the US to get a car, but if it works out to be a $1000-2000 savings, it may be better off to buy one locally (As dealers rip people off on trade-ins, and since you get the price that they pay you'll get one much cheaper than an average person can buy locally).

to figure out the price here is the way that i figured it out for my vehicles

-cost of car USD
-bank exchange rate (usually $.02 below what the actual exchage is)
-gst 6% 6.1% duty based on the USD you spent on the car with the exchange rate calculated for that day of crossing, based on what it was actually trading at. not how much you paid in canadian a few days ago, or the bank rate.
-$206 for RIV fee which includes your federal inspection
-$100 for A/C
-$100 for the out of provice
-$25-400 for DRL install (depending on whether you get the crappy tire relay, or goto the dealership)
-$25 for child safety restraint if your car does not already have it
-flights as cheap as 100 to cali one way from different american airlines
-$40 min per day food
-$100 per day hotel (can do a trip from cali in 2 days if wanted)
-300- 1000 in gas I just took the average mpg of the car, the distance of driving map quest gave me, and the average price of gas, and it was a fairly close guestimate

I would estimate you would look at min extra $3000 ontop of the american price, with 2 days travel, 1 night hotel, and live on fast food

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you "just missed the boat." RIV recently added all 2000-early 2005 S4's to the INADMISSIBLE to import list. Not sure if they go by the technicality of the year or the gen. But it looks like it effectively covers 2 gens.

Good post.. should just sticky that.

Also duty is only for imported vehicles... you don't pay duty on domestics.

k, any one else able to confirm that, because if that is true then it seems that plan is obviously out of question..

well i saw on the news they are targeting alot of the newer cars for importing. they say its because of the anti theft in the car that canada requires that the states dont. the real reason is because of the canadian dollar being as strong as it is dealerships are losing alot of money because of all te importing from the states. i could be wrong only they will know the truth.

correction i just read up on it, it seems thats on brand new vehicles like 2007 2008 models so i dont know why they wont allow it to be imported

cb7driver
any ideas anyone??:dunno:

dwarfy123
They just did the same to 95 m3s, which sucks cause I was seriously going to buy one within the next month. I think it might have something to do with emissions in that case, since 96+ m3s are all OBDII

cb7driver
fuck i think its totally retarded... if the Canadian economy is doing stronger i think it makes sense everyone will rush to the states to buy vehicles...

and if they wish to prevent certain vehicles from coming why not ban importing all together let alone only set up bans against Evo's, S4's, etc.
