Double-DIN unit feedback - Click HERE for Original Thread

jimmyt
Hi, folks,

In the process of considering a replacement audio unit for my stock '93 MR2, which is a double-DIN. Think that after a fair amount of research, the JVC KW-XG700 is the best way to go, with the hard-wired iPod connector that allows it to run directly through the unit controls. Do any of you have any experience with this unit (performance, caveats, etc.) and where in Edmonton can a person go to get it? All online deals I've found are US based and will not ship here...

Here's the link to the unit specs...reviews I've found are almost uniformly positive. Not looking to add in-dash video, so please don't suggest.

Thanks in advance.

just wondering, but why are you wanting to buy a double din CD player? :dunno:

anyway, why dont you buy it off ebay. i checked it out, and the sellers ship to canada, and plus the canadian dollar is strong right now.

Checked into eBay before I posted and, yes, they have plenty of them. I may go that route, but wanted to check around here first.

As for why the double-DIN:
- I just think it's a slicker look and, quite frankly, the extra space I'd gain for a single-DIN would just get crammed with more crap, anyway. :)
- the appropriate double-DIN would keep much more of a factory-installed look, and that's what I'm looking for.
- since I'll be connecting my iPod directly through the unit, I wanted a larger display to see data (Alpine has one with a small LCD that looks great, but is twice the price and has mixed reviews - this JVC is almost universally praised for its performance)

The unit I've got right now is the factory CD and cassette player which take up both slots, so I'm essentially just filling the space with what it's always had - tunes! If I could find a proper iPod hard-wire controller for my current unit, I'd do that, but I'm thinking it would be a bugger to control from the buttons.

I think he means why not get a double din that does video as well, which is what people usually do.

For a car I'm going to store for 6 months of the year - no. For the price difference, I'll just go with an audio unit. If a guy had an unlimited budget - yes, I'd probably get one with video. There are in-dash DVD's that are priced pretty cheap in the $2-300 range, but my guess is that's because they ARE cheap. With this JVC unit and an direct-wire iPod connection, the price comes out to less than $300 for, what I've read, some seriously decent lower-cost performance.

So, let me reiterate from the first post - not interested in video, just feedback from anyone who has experience with this particular JVC unit.

Thanks!

aznpryde87, took your advice and ordered one of eBay for $167 - with shipping and customs will come over $200, but should still come out a bit on top. Lots of them out there, but none of the local big box shops carry it. Since I'm not in Edmonton, hitting the specialty shops just doesn't work for me.

Thanks!

Avic Z2 all the way

best deck i've ever had

cool. let me know how it works out and if its all good.
hope u like the unit, and that its what u wanted.

personally i would have gone with a double din dvd unit, but i guess it wasnt right for u, plus i understand what u mean, why spend alot of money on something u will only use for like 4 months of the year.

jimmyt
shawley, your job must pay real well to get the Z2 - staff discount, too? :)

Honestly i bought it so i could learn the Avic's alot better

and it has helped, i've sold more of these units than any other salesmen, so it kinda paid for itself,

So any questions on it just fire them my way,

You could always go with the little brother the Avic D3, just make sure you have an Ipod or sat radio, or a cd changer as the dvd/cd drive needs to be used for the navi most of the time.
