Hood latch broke, how to open my hood - Click HERE for Original Thread

InitialD
So my hood latch cable either got stuck or broke off, lifting my hood off didnt work, and getting to it is impossible, how do i go about it? Taking the bumper off, or the lights are out of the question, hood has to be open, crawling under is also impossible. I got no ideas, its a 2003 civic.

your pretty much boned if u can't get at it from the front or underneath. jack the car up somehow in the front and crawl under.

see if you can get to the hood release cable through a fender or bumper area, and then pull on it really hard with some pliers. This should hopefully stretch the outside enough and pull the wire inside enough to open it.

Then ur fucked lol, jack it up man crawl underneath, u might have to driv on 2x4's or whatever but ya hood latch is simple getting to it might be tricky but u should be able to. If not bring it to a shop.

on the older hondas (preludes and civics) i can usually just reach up under the bumper (in front of the radiator) and yank like a motherfucker on the cable, it works every time for me? :dunno: good luck man.

edit: i've done it a few times on my buddies celica too, but then again, these were all early 90's cars...

oh its a piece of cake, but my cable is broken, and its impossible to reach to it the way u described, i did do the same thing with my other older cars, this one is kinda twisted, i got a hoist lined up, so ill see how i can work it out

sounds like a wicked theft thread:cool:

hmm... did you try taking off the finger end of the release mechanism (under your dash) and pulling the bare cable? that way you could see for sure if the cable is actually broken or not? it could just be the release part broke somehow. :dunno: good luck, i wanna see how it turns out lol

i think what it is really is probably the cable tit right where it attaches to the mechanism fell off and now is moving freely, hence not opening my hood yo

What you need.
1. hammer
2. Vice-Grips
3. OxyCedeline
Good luck.

Me and my buddy took a big pry bar on his winter beater and pried the hood up cause the same thing happened.. Left a few scratches and dents but in the end we got the hood up lol.. cheers good luck!

problem fixed:
1. got the car on the hoist, then stuck my light in there, found the cable and pulled on it. my cable was stuck in b/w the fender and the frame, so it didnt allow any play or movement. i took out the latch mechanism, and just going to do hood pins, cheaper and less hassle to replace the cables. but i made a special locking device, so noone can get in w/o the key. so much relief.

p.s. honda civic has a veeery weak front support, very weak and soft, so it deforms easy, not much of protecting during accident, scarry.

When I crashed my car I couldn't get the hood off/open until I took off the bumper and unscrewed the latch. The cable was broken in a bunch of places so it wasn't going to come off withpliers . See if you can reach the latch with a screwdriver to unscrew the bolts that hold it down. You might not have to take them all the way, justenough to loosen it so you can use your hand under the hood to slide the latch open.
