A recently tabled piece of Ontario legislation, through it's intentionally vague wording, seeks to shut down illegal street racing by outlawing the sale and use of any number of aftermarket performance parts.
Bill 241 of the road safety act, 2002, billed as "An Act to enhance safety and mobility on Ontario's roads," contains a specific subsection that addresses the area of parts and equipment that has car enthusiasts and automotive industry professionals rushing to sign an online petition opposing the legislation.
The section of the bill, entitled "Prescribed substances, equipment for racing prohibited," reads as follows:"172.2(1) No person shall drive or permit to be driven on a highway a motor vehicle with the prescribed part, containing a prescribed supstance or equipped with prescribed equipment in prescribed circumstances."
The proposed legislation goes on to state that a police officer may take a sample of any substance to test for it's legality or may romove and dispose of "anyprescribed part, substance or equipment" at the "cost and risk of the driver and owner" who are jointly liable for any fines levied.
Finally, those who are found with illegal parts or substances, or those who refuse to comply when asked by an officer to remove these offending items, will be hit with a hefty fine somewhaere between $200 and $1000 and / or a six-month jail term
This law is pure bullshit. SIGN the petition; PETITION |

Some comments on it
"once again, our government has chosen to punish law abiding taxpayers for the foolish actions of a few. this bill is wrong in many ways. It will not stop street racing, it will probably make police chases happen more often, because people stand to lose even more if caught. this bill is a financial disaster waiting to happen, in that numerous businesses will have to fold in the wake of this. we need to penalize those who acually break the laws, not those who take the time and expense of enjoying the sport in a responsible manner. the gun registry was a miserable failure, and this will be, also. this bill will only succeed in hurting the wrong people, once again. why not invest resources into promoting local tracks, and subsidizing events to draw more would-be street racers into the safe, legal confines of a dragstrip, or road couse? before you know it, it won't be so "cool" to street race, because there won't be a need for it. and for those that still chose to partake in street racing, hang 'em high. "
"I believe that this is an unjust bill if it will include modifications to any/all vehicles. I do not believe in street racing and I support child protection 110% however auto enthusiasts should not be penalized for modifieing their vehicles. Instead of passing a bill to prevent this why don't you contact all petition participants and ask that they be the eyes and ears of street racing. Think of all the people you would have as "police" monitoring the countries streets!"
"It is unfortunate that in an attempt to control the use of after market products by responsible and legal enthusiasts, the ultimate consequence will encourage abusive behaviour from those in "authority". Instead of wasting time on training officers to recognize "racing" parts on cars, perhaps the money and the time would be better spent on locating and tracking child sex offenders, gang violence and drunk drivers to redeem the safety and security of our neighbourhood streets."
"It amazes me to see how much time and money are wasted on nonsense such as this. Everyone pays for this. Rather than putting our hard earned money towards fixing or discussing IMPORTANT problems and issues , it is typical that the govermnent decides to crack down on something like this. I honestly could not believe that Bill 241 has even had more than a millesecond of thought, intelligence or any rational person to stand by it. Where am I living anyways? When is the ban on boating, aviation, motorcycles, street sweepers, lawn mowers, go carts, bicycles, tricycles and weed wackers going to come in play? I am sure you have already discussed these and wasted more of our money. I guess they are bill 242, 243, 244 etc. This bill is a farce. No one should support it." |

The law is vague, but most laws are. That is how lawyer's put food on the table and Mercedes' in their garage's.
My interpretation is that they are looking to shut down Nitrous Oxide use on the streets. What other "substance" could they test on your vehicle?
EDIT: P.S. The only eligible signatures are those of residents of Ontario. Don't dilute the petition with invalid signatures. Somebody took the time to write a well versed letter to government official's, it would be a shame to see it undermined by invalid signatures. |

This petition is open to ANYONE, I don't know what your talking about saying it is only open to ontario residents.
I'm sure not all 12000+ signitures are from Ontario only, so maybe your wrong.

But thanks for being supportive of "the scene" |

How many people that have signed the petition actually read the letter that was written?
Alot can be gained just by reading the letter and seeing how a difference CAN be made, instead of whining which goes nowhere fast. |
