Since ive been getting more into cars ive been noticing more about mine...
One thing that bothers me (i dont know if its normal or not) is that when i shift gears 1-2, 3-4 its like a 2 step motion.
*Pull down*
*Clunk sound (this is where the stick pauses for a second)*
*Enters 2nd, from first or 4th from third.*
Is this normal on older cars? (on the newer honda's ive never encountered this)
If it isnt normal, what should i do to fix it?(or buy)
And another one is going from a dead stop (neutral) into first... sometimes it doesnt go through, and im forced to shift into a random gear once or twice just so i can get into first.
Thank you for your time,

In general, clunking in between gears isn't normal. It's possible to have relatively harmless clunking in a car that utilizes a mechanical shift linkage to the gearbox - the clunking is often just a loose connection in one of the linkage rods. Find the loose connection and tighten it up. Could also be a similar issue (but less common I think) in a cable-actuated shift mechanism. If the shifter is coming directly from the gearbox with no intermediary linkage then that clunking would be bad...
As for the hard into first from a standstill, it's not that uncommon esp with older cars. Years ago, I had an MGB that was a pain to shift into first. I'm not sure of the exact cause, but an old MG mechanic advised me to just shift from neutral into 2nd, then go straight up to 1st. I got into the habit of doing that all the time at stoplights and now (many years later) I still do it without even thinking. |

| if its clunking and pausing your syncro mesh gears are worn out. is it like that in all rpm ranges or just low? whats it like up high? |

um for the trouble getting into first... try flushing the clutch lines, maybe you clutch isnt completely disengaging. Older fwd cars will generally always get a little notchy feeling as everything wears and stretches. I find 1st is harder to get into from a slight roll (~5km/h) and you have to give it some time but it is still smooth. If you want better shifting try double clutching whenever you downshift, it saves a lot of wear an tear and is kinda fun i guess
I wouldn't really be worried about things unless you can feel the clunk/grind in the shifter. If you have a short throw kit like mine it does make the shift a bit rougher but on everyday driving who cares, change gears a little slower if you want smooth engagement. |

High and Low rpm's (during summer/spring when i revved it high n stuff it still had that issue, but i thought it was natural seen as how that was the only manual car i had driven at the time.) |
