Apparently Daryl Katz put in 3 offers for ownership of the Oilers. What will this mean? Will it mean any changes? What are your guys opinions?

Yes, but it looks like the deal is going to go through this time. I'm watching it live on Sportsnet.

 Just got in from work and am watching the TV...well it looks like "we will never sell has became sure...maybe we will now...
Cal is on TV and is saying he is at a place where he is fine to sell his shares...others have been given the same offer....so will all of them sell? How will it be for them if some do and some don't? Will Katz ride their ass until they sell? Will he have majority??
What's the deadline? End of January?
This is going to be most interesting

Its interesting to note as well, Forbes said that the Edmonton Oilers are currently worth somewhere in the 146Million US range, and Katz offer of $185Million US in Aug was rejected.
So I'm assuming his bids must have been higher than $185Million US for it to even be considered :dunno:
Jamie |

Agreed for sure the money has to be much higher that they are "listening" this time....they aren't saying what the amount is just keep flashing last offer $185
Cal was doing a lot of talk about new generation...new blood...he has given his OK for this deal...I bet though there are some owners that won't agree to it... |
|

I think that dude should give me some of his money.
That being said, I think new ownership will put the Oilers into gear. Lately, they've just been sitting back and not actively, positively growing their team. I want a cup dammit! |

I think a lot do to with it, is the age of a lot of the shareholders. Most of them could have fathered my grandfather and will die soon.
Oh a side note, I'm watching the Oilers game right now...and I can't believe how much of a bum Roloson is...fuck, trade that fucking fool for a handicapped mascot.

It's exciting for Edmonton. Times change and the torch needs to be passed on to someone who is excited about the team and well quite frankly, able to throw some money around.
100,000,000 for a new complex. I can't argue with that logic alone; nevermmind the rest.
It's going to both interesting and exciting here in Edmonton in the near future. |

I think its a great time to change ownership. Having 2451749 owners with shares, has its down falls too. It takes too much effort for everyone to agree on a decision.
Having the13th richest man in Canada owner, can help the team go in a positive direction. I believe Katz does have intentions to build a new arena in the near future.
Jamie |
|
|

One owner and a rich one at that we wouldn't have to give away players who are wanting a little more....we could afford to resign them instead of trading for "future" picks...
Maybe it already is pretty much a done deal...we are just watching them go thru the motions...
One thing though....alot of thanks go to the multi owners...we wouldn't even be having this discussion right now if it wasn't for them....all 35 or whatever it is....they saved the Oilers and the city back in '98
I'm thinking it has to be close to a 200 mill offer |

There will be a clause where he won't be able to move the team out of the city I assume. |

Apparently he's offered up $100 million toward a new arena as well. Sadly the idiots still want to build downtown. It's going to be faster for me to drive south when my house is north if they do that stupid shit.
Guess what fuckheads! An arena downtown will not revitalize it. Why? Because 90 per cent of the businesses close at 5 p.m., before the people going to the hockey game will be anywhere near downtown. For the random straggler that might stop in to grab a pop or bag of chips on the way to the game it likely won't be worth it for 85 per cent of those places to stay open later.
This city needs to pull its head out of its ass and realize that they've fucked over any chance of downtown being vital with their horrible city planning. People aren't going to drive 30 mins into the core to do their shopping when all those same stores are at the stripmall monstrosity 2 mins away.
God I'm really starting to hate this place. |

Imagine the parking and the grid lock after the game! You think lots of people leave early at Rexall? Wait until the rink is downtown. I think they should just pump some more money into the current arena.
I agree about the shitty city planning though. |

A recent thread about a new arena/downtown complex.
I think it would be a great idea. Sure downtown is dead right now, but that's because there is no draw. Businesses will adjust their hours when they have the demand. They are not going to extend their hours in hopes that maybe an arena will be built. These plans show a LRT station IN the building, and there is supposed to be plenty of parking going in. |
|

Also, blame the city for DT being dead. I was a manager at Ceili's, which is owned by the same company that runs Cowboys, and a ton of red mile clubs and restaurants in Calgary.
For awhile the plan for Railtown was for Future Shop to be turned into a nightclub/fine dining/sports bar complex, but the planning committee revoked the proposal.
Why? The seniors complexes that were going up a block away were concerned about the noise/people.
THE SENIORS COMPLEX THAT WAS BEING BUILT IN WHAT SHOULD BE THE LIVELIEST PART OF THE CITY!
Katz should start by buying the city planning department, and doing us all a favor. |
|

I do think that it would be nice to have a more lively downtown area. For a city of our size, our downtown is SUPER Dead.
It would be a huge task though, the whole infrastructure would have to be redesigned and incorporated into what already exist there already.

Katz's offer is 188million, and it seems like its just a matter of time before this offer is accepted by the majority of the oiler shareholders ( he needs 2/3 majority)
Katz has said previously he will do whatever it takes in order for the Oilers to be competitive.. this would mean the Oilers will be spending AT or very very close to the salary cap limit each year
( a nice change)
Also Katz wants Cal Nichols to remain the chairman, and we get a new rink..  |

| This just means the price to park downtown, which has tripled around my work in the past two years, will just keep increasing. That's if you can even find a spot. If we have to park 20 blocks away from my work for the 90 minutes before we're able to pull into the underground parking on evenings I'm going to shoot someone. |

My parking is free downtown. It is only a 10 min walk into my office building. :D
Sure…I could park 10 feet closer and park in the $2.00 per day impark lot. But I am not lazy and hate impark with a passion.

A downtown arena is a disastrous idea
1) Parking is already bad downtown. They would have to create a parkade next to the arena to accomodate the people coming to the game at the same time people are leaving work. Imagine trying to get out of that parkade after the game?
2) The traffic over at Rexall at game time right now is disastrous, and that's nowhere near downtown. The Yellowhead is a few blocks north, and the Gretzky is a few blocks south, and it's still a disaster. You put it downtown, there are NO freeways nearby to take the majority away quickly, it will be even worse. Go south from downtown and now you've got to funnel all those cars onto the bridges after getting them down into the river valley. And what's on the far side of the river? No freeways, just more traffic lights. Now the traffic will backup onto the bridges.
3) They think putting an arena downtown will revitalize the downtown core? Yeah, sure! How many of you stick around the Forum Inn on the way out of games now? It's freezing cold and dark and I have to work in the morning. Everybody's in a hurry to get to their cars and get away from the area. The same thing will happen downtown.
4) Anybody who thinks our tax dollars won't get sucked up into this project is living in la-la land. They'll start the project, then a few years in, they will "discover" the price has gone up. Katz will say that he's put too much money in already, and if we want to keep him from selling the team to some billionaire from Houston, we (the taxpayers) will need to pony up the extra cash to keep the team here.
5) The reason the price will go up: We don't have the tradespeople and material in this province right now to keep the boom we're already building going. Where are all these magical carpenters, and electricians and all the concrete and rebar going to come from? Guess what this boom is doing to the price of tradespeople and material already? I got a great idea: let's ADD to the problem by building another arena downtown!!!
6) Northlands is already in a cash crunch keeping that huge property going. Let's take away their biggest money maker of the year and see what happens. What are they going to do? Host Klondike Days at the new arena downtown? What are we going to do with a perfectly good empty hockey arena? Put more of our tax dollars into property taxes to pay for it, that's what.
7) New tax revenue: Garbage! It's a zero sum game. The tax on a hot dog sold at a new arena downtown equals the loss on the tax on a hot dog no longer being sold at the vacant Rexall Centre. We're not going to suddenly starting buying MORE food at games just because the game's downtown.
8) Ticket prices are bad enough. Put it in a new arena and the price is going to go up. They will tack on a "facilities tax" to help pay for the new place. How many people are like me, and can't afford to go to games now, as it is?
I've got a novel idea: let's fix the potholes and the crumbling swimming pools and all the other infrastructure FIRST, and then we can worry about the new stuff, like hugely expensive unnecessary hockey arenas for overpaid, underproducing millionaires. Naw, that would never work............. |

Matt, have you ever been to NYC? You think its bad here....lol. I guess that sort of thing just goes hand and hand when you have a city of our size, growing as fast as it is.
Sufficient public transportation is the only viable solution I see. Other than that, you would have to completely redesign the already in place infrastructure.

downtowns problem is its such a bitch to get in and out of. u have 1,000,000 traffic lights no matter which side of downtown u leave and single/double lane roads at most. no bus or truck lanes or anything its jamed most of the day. lots of people just avoid downtown in all means possible.
what we needs is better flow through and around the core. and by the looks if it its gonna get ALOT worse. the roads are the same as they where 20 years ago but with like 500,000 more people.

Sorry what i meant was..
The salary cap will increase each year, and with the current ownership situation, i doubt the Oilers would continue to spend AT or near the cap for each year the cap increases.
Katz on the other hand has much deeper pockets than the current ownership, so spending at or near the cap each year won't be a problem for many years to come. |
