5 years left, happy solstice!! - Click HERE for Original Thread

In my opinion, the day of the winter solstice in North America should be the mark of the new year.

More importantly, today marks 5 years till the end of our known civilization... maybe. I like to think the myans were on to something with their calender. But since we've 5 years until total doom, lets look at some interesting Earth facts... (in case you didn't already know)

You think over weight?? The Earth weighs in at about 5,973,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg

At its perihelion (point in orbit closest to the sun, which will happen sometime in the next 24 hours) the Earth is 147,098,074 km from the sun. In June at the aphelion, the Earth will be 152,097,701 km from the sun.

Our orbital period is 365.26 days, and we're moving along our orbit at breakneck speeds; 107,218 km/h to be exact. That means in the course of one orbital period, we will have collectivly traveled 93,989,720.3km. And if you live for 100 years you will have traveled one lightyear!

Of the available 510,072,000 kmē surface area, 361,132,000 kmē is water.

The mean circumference of our fine home is 40,041.47 km, but it bulges along the equator, leaving an equatorial circumference of 40,075.02 km. Thats a difference of 72km between equitorial and meridional circumferences...

We spin pretty damn fast too, over the speed of sound... 1641.996km/h. Just sitting here, I cover 465.1 meters every second! And who says sitting on your ass all day won't get you anywhere!?

It's quite the marvel of engineering, isn't it? Assuming it was engineered that is. But all the same, we live on one amazing apparatus, and so over the course of today and tomorow, I celebrate a new orbit.

Cheers Earth!

u say the speed of the earth keeps increasing and the distance from the sun is increasing as well. u think the earth would ever leave the orbit of the sun due to this?

Oh ya. Where did you get these "facts" from?
Do you have a link to some research papers written by some brainiac doctors, or an article on a university website?
Please don't tell me it came from the University of your Hotmail Inbox.

It's not a hotmail chain letter. The mythos surrounding the Mayan apocalypse has been around for a very long time. It's explained pretty well here.

It's much the same as many other paleo-doomsday story. Largely based on ancient astronomy, take it with as many grains of salt as you need.

Personally, I don't think that the world is going to end anytime soon, but I am always curious about things like this. I like to wonder how much a civilization thousands of years ago was actually capable of coming up with.

:( As much as I'd like to see the Earth fly away from the Sun as a projectile I don't think it's ever going to happen. We orbit the Sun in an elliptical (oval) shape so there's always a time in the year when we're closer and further from the sun.

Honestly though if we changed the topic title and removed the OP's second paragraph we'd all be "Hey, those are some random facts about the Earth that I'm not going to remember once I close this window, but it's nice to know that someone figured all of this stuff out!"

The Mayans did a good job with there calender and they definitely get alot of attention for the accuracy, there suppose to be nothing more than savages.
Old civilizations were not outta touch with the stars as we think and there astronomy was really very very good, if anything it is a significant day in the universe and it should be celebrated in some form and thanx/Ami-chg to the universe shall be offered.
I don't know if anything is going to happen that could really change everything as we know it but alot of energies of all forms are gonna be aligned on those days before and after and I plan to absorb as much of it as i can in whatever worldly way I can.

agreed.

Personally I do not believe it will be the end of the world, or the end of civilization. If it was truly the end of the world would there not have been some documentation by the Mayans? After all they were very good and accurate about documenting events and items to occur in the future.

Dec 21 2012 falls on a Friday. Maybe I will go out in style burning dough nuts in the Police parking lot with my new M5 if that is in fact the end of the world. Worst case I will be given a a stunting ticket then fight it in court a few weeks later.

There are more and more geologists comming to the conclusion that polar shifts and ice ages happen hand in hand, so global devistation is definetly going to happen. They also know that polar shifts happen in conjunction with the progression of the equinox's and the galactic equinox is due to happen within the next 100 years...

Mind you, this info I got from a book titled, "How to survive 2012" by Patric Geryl. He prides himself on being the person who unlocked the "Dresden Codex" of the Mayan calendar. All of his books are interesting, and somewhat convincing....

Patric Geryl's website - theres some good doomsday info here, if you're interested.

As for the facts on the planet, they're well documented online, and in your local library.

yes, yes, Alberta used to be a tropical climate before it turned into this winter paradise. I think I am in a well positioned geographic location wise to enjoy such an event.

Now with that being said.... "if" an event is ever going to happen, why worry about it? There is absolutely nothing I can do to prevent it. Why worry about something that I can not control, nor change.

Yes..there is clear evidence about discoveries on how things instantly froze ie) the Woolly Mammoth, the seeds of tropical vegetation in the polar region. However one thing still makes me wonder. If this what we are to expect to be the end of the world and everything as we know it.... why are we still here, right now, discovering it?

Personally my long term strategy is to be alive and well, golfing and driving my car for the next 60 years.

I am sure all the comets that are going to be passing by will be full with people on them, and people waiting to line up on the next one.
