When I was in India, I drove the Suzuki Murti. Basically a detuned, cheaper version of my favorite car (SPRINT/Firefly etc). And they are some amazing cars.
The roads are really rough in India, and these little cars take a TON of abuse. They last forever and they are basically free to fix. I don't know anything about Tata cars except they build most of the commercial vehicles in India and they last forever. |

Haha those cars are the shit. I agree with you, they are extremley cheap to maintain and they take more abuse than alot of cars take. |

| aren't these the same guys looking to purchase landrover/jag from ford. If so this will kill those names i think, being associated with a 2500 car |

| How so? If they can build a car that tough for $2,500, imagine what they could do with $100,000. |

 WORD!
Didnt ford put that horrible diesel engine in the Jag type S? Jag's have always been my "dream" car and It would be nice to have a newer thinking company own them. |

Blame Transport Canada, there are too many unique-to-Canada regulations that make it too costly to comply small economy vehicles for our market.
Luckily some people in Transport Canada are looking at changing some of their strict regulations, take the Canadian bumper regulations for instance:
http://www.ivoac.ca/pn/index.php?na...opic&t=1214
TC is considering rescinding entirely or harmonizing our bumper requirements with those of the US or the UNECE standard. The bumper regulations we have now come from the 70's (do you remember what those bumpers look like). Car safety structures have come a long way since the late 70's and TC admits that bumpers only absorb around 15% of an impact if you're fortunate enough to use them. Many countries don't have bumper regulations, instead they allow the manufacturers to self-regulate, this provides a benefit to pedestrian safety because the bumpers aren't so bulky.
But it takes members of forums like this one to speak up and write letters to their MPs and Transport Canada, and joining websites that are looking at taking away the restrictions Transport Canada imposes on our market:

About 60 new vehicles will hit Indian shores in 2008(!), but the most interesting one to me is the new Tata 'people's car (VW anyone?).
For around $2500 (Cad), it's half the price of the Suzuki (who also announced a huge price cut).
I know these cars are really cheaply made, with NO options (no heat etc!), but here you have a running/driving, brand new vehicle for $2K. (Less than what my furniture costs) and in comparison we have the cheapest car in Canada costing around $12K. (Sorry to say, but I would rather have a Tata than a Pontiac...)

Interesting post.
Fist thing I thought of when I read Tata motors was "Tits Motors".
That is a good deal for $2500.00
