Frozen Antifreeze - Click HERE for Original Thread

RSN CRX
So my girlfriend got a 07 rav4 about a week ago from the states. It was kept indoors until last night. This morning I took it for a drive for about 1km and noticed that there was no heat in the car and the engine temp was at high. I was almost at my house when I heard a big bang from the engine. When I opened the hood it turned out that that big bang was the big rad hose cam away from the block. I am now waiting for the anti freeze to defrost and then I will flush it. It seems to start up just fine. Do you guys think that there could be any other possible damage???

Thanks

newaccorddriver
quite possibly a cracked block if the antifreeze froze(water expands when frozen). i would definitely take it in to get looked at at the very least cause it could present even bigger problems down the line

Prudz_lude
lol and why didn't you guys winterize the vehicle the day you got it into canada?

There is your issue right there.

No coolant change to the proper amount when it came into Canada.

I would suspect your block is cracked, head might be warped.

I am thinking a new engine might be in order. You might be able to claim warranty on it.

warranty. If I was a canadian toyota dealer I would laugh at you. I would take it in to get looked at. get a rad flush and get the proper coolant put in. you might get lucky.

and I would laugh at you in return then call up HO.

If it is an 07 and he purchased it from a dealer he could use the fact that the dealer was negligent for not informing them they needed to switch the coolant over if they knew the vehicle was going to Canada.

We will see who is laughing then.

Again this would probably work if he purchased from a dealer. If it was a private sale he might be out of luck.

That is half the probelm guys like you think people should buy a car in a certain place that is what freedom and fair market place is all about. The only thing a deal should say is I well get you in as soon as possible.

THUD
Well hopefully your RAv4 is fine, alot of ppl that buy cars from the states don't even realize that all the fluids in there new auto is not winter proff.
The fuel gels the antifrezz frezzes and the washer fluid tank splits open.

RSN CRX
So her dad checked it out. Let it melt down and put in new fluid and she is back up and running so we got lucky. Probably no big damage was done due to the fact that it was a very short period of time it was driven for.

you dont wreck it by driving it. you let it freeze and therefore it expanded. might have expanded enough to crack the block or wreck a seal of some sort. you should check the coolant level once a week or something to make sure its not being consumed or leaking out somewhere cause of that

fuel gelling up shouldnt be a problem if you used up a tank of fuel and refilled it here. same with the washer fluid. antifreeze is a problem though

Is all it would take. Have you had the engine running at normal operating temps for an extended period of time? Something might show up later on down the road. Check you oil too.

Pressure test the cooling system to ensure that everything is infact ok. The point of freeze plugs is to come out of the block rather than having the block itself crack if the antifreeze, does end up freezing. Hopefully you were lucky enough to get away with a valuable lesson and not a massive repair bill.

i think the pressure testing would only work in certain situations, and should not be the only thing that you rely on when testing out the entire system for leaks.

are you sure thats what the freeze plugs are for? i thought they were only for closing up the entire block itself after it gets produced and machined/cleaned. i guess you learn something new everyday:thumbup:

If the cooling system is leaking a pressure tester will make it very apparent instantly. The pressure will not be maintained and will drop right off, you could also look for the location of the leak. It's not the only tool for finding coolant leaks, but it's one of the best.

Yeah the name "FREEZE" plug hints at it's function, they do not always let go before the block cracks but that's one of the idea's behind them. Most of the time freeze plugs just block line drilled passage way's through the engine block.

hey didnt wanna start a whole new thread about bringing cars from the states, as i am sure there are tons. but i was just wondering is there a site (link) someone could post that show the costs, like what are the costs of bringing a car in, other than the travel and car cost. like what is the import fees, and taxes and inspections and stuff.
thanks

oh and sorry to take this thread off topic, i only did it, cause i think the guys question is answered. if not sorry and pls delete this post.

If she picked this up at a dealer I can't imagine why it did not have the proper mix of 50/50 ?

I have seen 60/40 or 40/60 mixes but usually under special circumstances and both would be fine in the weather we are having?

A call to the seller should be in order.

I can't imagine why anyone would think you need to change the coolant/antifreeze when coming from the states?

kold
Have a look at this chart:

http://www.eetcorp.com/antifreeze/freeze_points.gif

it shows that a 40/60 mix of glycol/water would result in a freezing point of about -10 degrees F (~-23 degrees C).

So one could conceivably see a mixture like that freezing in our weather, at some point during the year..

newred
Is why I check my car to see how good the Antifreeze is. Luck mine was all good.

RSN CRX
Well I got another 2 ford trucks from there and the antifreeze was fine.
