hilux surf questions - Click HERE for Original Thread

seevik
spent couple of hours last night, but haven't found exactly what i was looking for.
I'm interested in the 92-93 hilux surf,
1. because of the RHD
2. low kms and way better shapes for those years are from japan compared to the 15 yr old 4runners here with twice the kms and eaten out from rust

Now i know these cars are famous for the bulletproof engines that go for miles and miles, but which engine is the best on these cars, as i will use it lots for highway driving, and winter beater.
I found out that up to 92 they have the 2.4 I4 turbo diesel, and from 93 the 3.0 turbo diesel. Should i maybe wait couple months for the 93 to be imported?
Most surfs here are the 2.4, what kind of experiences did people have on the highway, what are the pro's and con's? or can someone direct me to a car site that will give me all the info i'm looking for? I amd really interested in this car though, for a while, and there is a really clean one for sale on 780, so i would lik to hear some opinions from people that own them. thanks in advance.

Happy New Year

The 2L-TE's (2.4l) are prone to persistant head cracking. This is pretty informative:

there was also a huge head gasket problem too that caused a lot of owners (myself included) a whole lot of money. I put in an extra 6 grand into my engine -head gasket was corroded for so long, it corroded the head gasket seam. Head gasket issue lead to the engine overheating so I needed new heads (actually needed 2 at a cost of $1000/ea), etc., etc.,

You can imagine how an issue like that snowballed to 6 grand.

I think the i6 cylinder engines didn't have that problem though -just my i4.

Do LOTS of research.

i was lookin at your hilux rabb, really clean, looks exactly at what i wanted to a year now, but i would not want that engine though, so im looking at the jeep cherokee and 4runner from 98-2002 or so now, i would hate to be stranded on my way to work somewhere

so what engine is the famous for the huge milage these cars get?

thanks alot for the info guys

Jeep tranny in some models not so good for that year.. 4Runner is probably best.
