Cleaning Chrome Wheels - Click HERE for Original Thread

Flex
Whats the best way to clean chrome wheels. I have a set on the truck and I use them all year round. In the winter they get that crap that sticks right on and is hard to get off. I know a person can use SOS pads on chrome bumpers and such without scratching.....can you use them on wheels as well??? If not what is the best way? I will take them and get them polished in the spring but I just want to know what to do for washing them a few times in the winter.

I had some 20" chromies on my truck, and I drove it all winter with them on there, and yeah - I know exactly the shit you're talking about...

I used a product called "red slave iron remover" to clean the chrome, and it worked amazingly, you can pick up a bag at Big Iron Drilling on the southside... It's like $15.00 or some shit, I don't remember the exact cost. Mix it with hot water, and use an SOS pad, but be careful... The fumes are super nasty.

thanks for the info......you did use and SOS pad on your wheels and they didnt scratch?

Steel wool.

Trust me, I have done it to ferraris and Fords, removes overspray, dirt , grime, road crap.!

Yup. I've used steel wool on chrome rims as well.

SOS pads won't scratch your shit dude.

i would still recommend the finest grade of Steel wool you can find, SOS pads are still a little coarse for my liking and I wouldn't personally use them.

They will work but I still wouldn't do it.:dunno:

He's driving his truck year-round with his chromies on getting them all fucked up with road salt and sand and all kinds of other wear and tear on them during the winter season... You really think SOS pads are going to do any harm? PFFT.

fugumerkur
yeah, I guess your right!

im all thinkin show finish kinda deal.!

you win, but only this time...:thefinger

i had learned from a semi truck driver while i was on the rigs to spray hair spray on your chrome after you clean it and it leaves a clear protective coating on the chrome and it makes it easier to clean afterwards. just rinse the dirt off and you dont need to scrub or anything.... i have yet to try it out but he has been doin it for years and swears by it.

Like Aquanet or is there a particular brand?

And yeah, now that you mention it.. I have noticed lots of people driving around all winter with chromies on... what a way to waste the nice finish on your wheels....

Coke is on the Acidic side, you can use it to soak pistons, connecting rods, and if you use enough you can clean your crank in a tub too.

I work for a trucking company, and oversee all cleaning duties at work. The absolute best thing for chrome wheels, which all our long haul drivers have is pure acid. I believe its hydrochloric but im not sure, we also use to use it for cleaning the inside of our trailers, they are aluminum flooring. next if you cant get any cleaning acid, is steel wool and soap. Im friends with a driver who has chrome wheels all the way around, and uses steel wool and it looks amazing when done. However acid is by far the best, plus it repeals dirt for awhile to, and removes all rust.

Steel wool is really good...
Start with corse wool and work to something really fine. You can finish it by using Mothers chrome polish at the end. I managed to make my 74" Honda shine like new using that combo...

not a waste of you keep them clean...which is what I'm planning to do. I was going to swap them out for the winter but th damn things are so freaking heavy I figured it would be easier just to give them a good cleaning a few times in the winter then get them polished up in the spring.

Maybe some people have two sets of chrome 20"s and they run the really nice set in summer, and the less awesome set in winter, like was the case with me. Baller all winter.
