Is that a Howitzer shell?

T-LAV MRV
i was just about to suggest a 105mm HE howitzer round, way too big to be anti-air. it is a round from 1943, even has the lot number from which it came from on it. nice find

those make excellent doorstops, and bookends.

Yes and also I have seen them turned into lamps...sometimes wind up in antique shops

The Naval Museum has some info about this and also maybe this site will be helpful to you

Marks XVI

"Some 2,555 Mark XVI and XVI* along with 238 Mark XXI guns were manufactured in Britain. Canada produced 504 Mark XVI* and 135 Mark XXI guns. Australia produced a further 45 Mark XVI* guns."

My grampa who's 96 had it in his house for years. I got it from him about 10 years ago.

I just realized it's the oldest thing I own. I don't know why I never looked closely at the bottom before. I never knew it was WWII vintage.

BRITAIN1.8

BARNSEY
My friend has 2 of those in his kitchen...he uses them to hold up a big piece of wood to stop his dog from coming into the living room...those things are beastly

Perilous_Enterprises
That is a 102mm (reffered to as the 4inch back in the day) fixed ammunition Anti-Aircraft Artilery round. Used in WW2.

This round was carried in the Tribal class destroyers of the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, and Royal Austrailian Navy.

The last remaining Tribal class Destroyer is the HMCS Haida, which has been restored and is now a historical site located in Ontario.

WTF? Why such a huge round for AA?

bboybean
Big planes :dunno: maby they figured it was easier to blow them into a million pieces than have to hit them several times.

maybe for taking out cargo or supply planes?

Rich_A
are these the rounds that you see in shows like Band of Brothers where airborne planes are being fired upon and there's huge explosions and smoke in the sky where the round detonates?
