Knocking Sounds!!! - Click HERE for Original Thread

chevyguy
Ok well last night me and my buddy drove to edmonton to watch he oilers game. anyway about half way into edmonton, i hit a bump and the front end starts knocking. After every large to medium sized dip or bump the right front makes a knocking sound which is truly painful to hear, its kinda loud.

My car is lowered with stock struts right now and i am assuming they are finally blown and should be replaced?? My guess is the front right strut is gone, and is bottoming out, i really cant tell if any fluid is leaking either.anything else this could be? one front strut for my car is 117 bucks, so buying all four would be pretty pricey and i would appreciate any suggestions guys!

:dunno:

Many things can cause a loud noise in the front end.

One way to test your strut is to hold onto it with your hand while a friend pushes up/down on the car. You should feel it on the outside of the strut if its blown. You could also do this with a mechanic's stethoscope to test it out if you want to be more precise.

THUD
Grab the tire try and move it side to side and tug on the top of it and wiggle and shake, next get it up on a jack and take off the tire look at everything.
Use a short pry bar/lever and a block of wood and move the whole thing up and down.
Possable things:
broken spring
balljoint busted uppper/lower
CV drive axle
Blowen strut like you said.

Theres your problem.... your stock struts were not meant for anything but OEM springs, they cannot handle the the stress put on em from aftermarket springs.

did u cut the springs? maybe the struts are bottoming out, or u have broke a coil.

there are lots of things that can be wrong like another member noted.

check your frontend and make sure everything is tight and not broke, then go from there.

thanks for all the help so far guys!!

no they are not cut they are eibach sportline springs. I figure its the lower ball joint, since if it was the strut you would hear it alot more often when it bottoms out. its just on really big bumps. Crappy thing is my ball joints are still original, and are riveted in place, which will be a pain to remove.

I would think riveted is easier for a DIY'er than the pressed in types. All you need to do is drill out the rivets.

I would assume if you were careful you could also just grind the heads off the rivets if you didn't want to risk enlarging the hole.
