A friend of mine was quoted 600$ for an install of deck/amp/sub in his 03 Grand am , is that normal . Iv never paid for having a system installed before so I dont know if thats high or not (I sure as hell wouldnt pay it).
Anyone know of any decent cheaper shops , hes a uni student so his budget is kinda tight.
Thanks Tons |

| Does yur buddy have all the wiring. How many channel amp is it. Does he need a sub box. If he does not have any of the above $600 would not be too bad. For a box wires, fuses and labour. |

| i know he has a box and I think he said that the price included wires. He also said something about having to run his stock deck AND another deck.?? |

thats the okd school way, they have modules for the rds now.
you should be looking at
around 180 for the module, 50 for the deck install, 30 for the mount kit, 10 for antenna adapter, 120 for amp.sub install, and between 80-120 for a wiring kit for his amp/subs.
give or take depending on where you go. |

| I paid 700 bucks for a 7500 MTX sub, custom sub box, and a clarion 400 watt mono amp. Your friend is also getting a deck with that i say its a great price. on gm cars anything newer than 1999 has the main computer located in the stock deck. Which runs pretty much all the dash like sensor things, like the high beams indicator, seatbelt light, ignition chime, low fuel, you know. SO when you get an aftermarket deck you also need to purchase something that can still run all that stuff. |

yes. GM vehicles after the year 2000 have a Class 2 Databus system built into the factory radio. the affects of removing the factory radio without buying the proper module will cause these things to happen.
Vehicle Customization Menu Options:
( Most Cavaliers, Sunfires and other base models do not offer most, if any of these features.
Check the vehicle owner’s manual to see available features. )
Displays current settings
Oil life monitor reset
Tire inflation monitor reset
Delayed headlamp illumination
Automatic door lock and unlock
Remote visual/audible verification of remote lock/unlock
Enable/Disable content theft
Enable/Disable trunk lock shock sensor
Short or long horn with remote lock/unlock
Key fob transmitter programming
Door chime reminders when you leave ur headlights on, keys in the ignition or interior light on.
The radio is used as a control panel to communicate with the vehicles computer for the customization of certain “convenience features”. More important than the above features and chime, there is no switched 12vlt. power supplied in the radios plug, that is done thru data.
there is a myth that the radio controlls the airbag deployment aswell which is 100% FALSE. i dont care what anyone says! |

| Im guessing your buddy has the monsoon system correct? Check out the Grand Am Owners Club and you will see a ton of posts on this subject. IMO, seems quite high, but then again, I do that stuff myself but without the monsoon |

| well , wouldnt it make sence to cut all the wires for the speakers , splice the power wires for the new deck , connect that and have the old deck running as a computer and the new deck for music thats how i'd do it |

theres a harness that does that. you put the stock radio in the rear quarter pannel and let it run and use the aftermarket at the same time.... but that harness cost just as much as the module that is out now that doesnt require you to do that. so its more effiicient to go with new technology and less work.!! |

EL OH EL!!!
I can assure the "main computer" is NOT in the deck haha, have you ever seen the bcm or pcm on a car??....nor is the high beam indicator, seatbelt light, low fuel etc..etc...
Class2 databus in the deck on that vehicle controls.....THE door chime, and the rds and THAT'S it. You don't even have to run the harness if you don't want to, if you don't you will lose the door chimes. Some say that's the cheap way out , totally depends and in my opinion it's personal preference...whomever I am doing the install for if they want to maintain the rds and the chimes I will put the additional harness in, if they say they don't care and want to save 50 bucks I don't do it. |

No, i know that the things which control like high beams and stuff isnt located in the stock deck, i meant that when these things are on, the displays on the dash board dont light up man. thats all i meant, have you ever installed a deck in a gm car without that harness or module to replace the stock one??
i tryed and my dashlights wouldnt work and the chimmer was fucked. Im not saying that the module in the stock deck controls everything, just the indicators on the dashboard, chimmer and interior lighting i believe read what that tibbymatt dude said in his first post. |

Yes I have done probably a dozen with the harness and a dozen without the harness. All you ever lose on 99 percent of the gm cars in the RAP and the doorchime.
Highbeam indicators have nothing to do with the deck on any of the gm cars. Nor do the displays, chimer yes....nothing else. |

I own a 2004 saturn ion...which is a GM.
after being told 150-200 for a little harness plus a bypass i said enough. I looked on ebay, got the harness for $0.99 and did it myself. All that i have lost was the door chime, After being told that i would lose my displays basicly. Long story short a door chime is not worth over 300 to me for an annoying noise. |
