Having more power than you need is not a problem, just set the gains properly and don't abuse the subs.
I've burnt up more subs by not having enough power and pushing the amp into distortion than having too much power.
Hell, I'm running 1400 watts into a 1000 watt sub right now... beat on it daily and it's been fine.
