Furusato is the best, with a place called Koto in St. Albert a close second. Both are owned and operated by Japanese cooks/family, so the quality is excellent and the dishes true to traditional Japanesecuisine.
Japanese Village is the best place to go for Japanese grilling (steak, lobster, etc), although I don't find the 'cooking-in-front' as fun as it used to be. It's expensive, too - but still can be quite romantic from what I recall.
Mikado is alright to go to, but it is slightly expensive for what you get and the food isn't amazing. Quality is consistent, however, and service is usually good (and they have some cute people working there!). They have a huge selection of dishes (and Japanese beers) although some dishes aren't 'Japanese'. The bonus is they are open fairly late on weekends/Friday.
Kyoto is also in the same house as Mikado but I recall it being even more expensive. I've had a few meals at both Kyoto that I didn't think were very good. Maybe someone has something better to add about this place?
Yokozuna in Riverbend square has roughly the same quality as Mikado at a lesser cost... but their menu selection is smaller. It's never too busy, making it a good place for an impromptu meal. Good service and reasonable prices.
Tokyo Noodle Shop and Sushi Bar is a neat sushi bar on Whyte. I haven't gone there very much, but its a good place to have a light snack when shopping on Whyte in the summer.
Tokyo Express used to be a fun place to get a quick bite to eat back in 2003 but their quality has fallen dramatically... and the prices are now high. Same story with Edo... I miss those hand made yakisoba noodles in University...
I've been to a few others, but I think now they are closed or I've forgotten their names...
If anyones been to any other place, please add to this ;) |

Sushi Wasabi on 111St & roughly 60Ave (Lendrum Shopping Center) is good, I enjoy their food but it is on the pricier side.
Very small, Japanese family owned place.
There's a place in the West end called Kobe, in the Callingwood shopping center area right by the Dairy Queen (178St, just by the Jamie Platz YMCA).
They've got some decent dishes as well.
Shogun Japanese on 121St & Jasper is alright, never that busy so you can almost always be guaranteed a seat (it's a HUGE restaurant, esp. for Japanese).
I think they cater more to the "cooked food" side of the menu, their fish selection is fairly basic.
I think that Kyoto isn't as expensive as Mikado.
Tokyo Express & Edo really don't count as Japanese cuisine (IMO), it's just fast food. Not bad food but not something I'd make a special trip for.
The Yokozuna on 106St by Whitemud Crossing has better fish than the Riverbend Square Yokozuna. The RB Sq. location has terrible ventilation so you always leave the restaurant smelling like tempura.
Their university location is super busy, fish quality is on par with RB Sq but it has the nicest layout/environment IMO. A little cramped but decorated better than the other two. |

Lies! You've just tapped the resources of all the local places you know for picking up asian women... And you're looking for fresh meat. Careful not to get a restraining order filed against you by a whole race! |

furusato ftw...i think thats the first restuarant we ever went to in Edmonton when we moved here and we haven't stopped going.
The owner always gives us this huge fish appetizer on the house.
I haven't seen that dish at any other japanese restaurant. |

I can't recall the name of the place, but it's on 109st just south of Saskatchewan Drive, basically right as you come up the hill from the High Level on the left-hand side. Go for a maki boat and then head over to the Garneau across the street for a good movie. There's a solid date.
EDIT: Looks like the place's name is Kyoto.:dunno:
I'm not that well versed in sushi compared to some of you I'm sure, but our meal was solid there a few weeks ago. I think I'm going to have to check out this Furusato place now. |

Try their beef tataki... and the tempura. Just make sure that between your date and yourself that you like all the vegetables. Or you won't know what to do! |
