Anyone ever bought auto stuff online? - Click HERE for Original Thread

GT45
I was just wondering how many of you ever bought from a mail order company. Things we don't normally get here in Edmonton. Like racing gloves or shoes and other clothing. Even things like videos. I ordered a racing video last week and I like being able to sit at the computer and just have the shit sent out to me and have it show up at my door.

What have you guys bought so far?

But there's also the downside to it too. Things getting lost in shipping, orders getting messed up. Let me hear if you got any horror stories.

I own a Ford derived european car thing.

I get all my parts online.

Why buy them from canadian tire or partsource and have to guess if you have the right part anyway.

You ever ask anyone at canadian tire if they have parts for a Merkur, Dumbist look ever!

"Whats the make for Merkur"?

Now Now.. I've gone in there looking for parts for my Fifth Ave, and get the same response, so you're not special...

I've ordered rear leaf springs, shackles, bushing from espo.com I called them to place the order cause I wasn't a custom sizing. I got air shocks from e-bay.. prolly order some parts from Summit online if I keep my car.

My leaf springs, getting a custom 5 leaf 1" over, all bolts, shackles, poly bushings and shipping cost less than buying stock 4 leafs here.

Last thing I ordered was my FMIC from 240sxmotoring, came in within 1 week:thumbup:

Too bad the shops here can't get their pricing together, cuz look at all the business they're losing.

I'm in for wheels and lots of little mr2 specific stuff.

Story Time!

So I wanted to swap the clutch in the stang last weekend, I knew it was wearing and provided I could get the clutch for a decent price in the city I would do it. So Sunday afternoon I make my calls to the parts places getting quotes and in stock availability. (it sucks ass looking up phone numbers and waiting on hold for some dumb parts guy to keep asking me is it a v8, is it a v8.... pfff)
So part source says they have a 2.3L clutch for an 89 Thunderbird turbo coupe ( what my mustangs motor is out of) 169.00 before taxes and in stock.! Im over joyed, a beater clutch for under 200.!
Went and picked up the clutch, counted the splines, checked for the alignment tool, throw out bearing and pilot bearing! Check.

a few hours in and my tranny is sitting next to the car at the body shop. Im all happy and ready to pull the clutch and see how worn it is.....
6 bolts later im staring at a worn clutch disc, and a heat cracked pressure plate.
Grab the new clutch setup and clean the protective grease off, use a scotchbright adaptor on an angle grinder to scuff up the fly wheel and the pressure plate and set the new part in. NOTHING LINES UP>

at this point my heart stops for a second. 3/8's Snap on ratchet goes skidding across the floor and I walk to the shop office just pissed off, on the phone asking these guys to look up the part number. Oh thats for a 2.3 L mustang. So somehow when I was bullshitting about how I have a 2.3L mustang with a turbo motor in it and ordering the part as a 1989 THUNDERBIRD turbo coupe clutch they fucked up and gave me a dinky little 1" in diameter smaller clutch. I hang up.

JB's , I figure for $100.00 more I could get a centerforce clutch and hope its in stock (sundays are my freetime day so instock is a big concern right now)
Yup Jb's had em 300 for a dual friction clutch by centerforce. but its 12 day wait period Yeah, i'll just leave my car on stands for 12 days, take the bus and be happy!

Napa was next. They had one in stock, proper part number and correct for my engine. So to be safe I take the clutch that came off the stang put it in a box and catch a cab to Napa.
Upon arrival and saying, im looking for so and so clutch, the lady already had it on hand. Well. It was a fuckin 2.3L NA clutch, just like the nice one sittin next to my transmission at the shop. I ask her to look up the part again and she came out with a clutch for an F150. I calmly said sorry thats not it and left. 18 year old blonde chick that probably new more about daytime television then cars. Ugly too.

40.00 cab ride later im sitting on my bellhousing cursing part stores in edmonton. Few hours later my clutch that originally came off the car is back in
So 6.5 hours of work on my 1 day of free time a 172.00 clutch sitting in a box in the back seat of the stang and a 40.00 cab ride.

Why buy from the city anymore. The staff at many establishments fail to know so many important aspects of the automobile that if you are in a jam, they can't help you.
THe partsmen that know their shit are middleaged alcoholics that need a haircut and they only care about when 5pm rolls around so they can either gamble or go drink.

Rock auto has the correct clutch for 75.00 before shipping.

They also offer me multiple manufactureres to choose from.

BUying online is the thing to do!

The end.

bboybean
always buy online, not only beacuse of the prices but shit for my focus is harder than hell to find . If I had a Zetec I would probably have more options locally. Iv always got my stuff early too.

Flex
I buy lots online as well.....prices are usually alot better and not much local for subie stuff.

I did order a full exhaust from toronto........and low and behold Fedex losses it. How do you loose a box about 2 ft wide and 10 ft long?????? They finally got it to me a week late and it had been delivered to the wrong place in edmonton. Of course it had been opened, so I made the driver stand there while I took everything out of the box and inspected it before I signed......it was all good in the end.

Fazda
online ftw, way cheaper and alot of parts you can't find around here

2ndgenlude
i buy all my stuff online too. i always get burned from parts stores in the city.

ae1969
... all the time.

I have a simple process.

1. I use the internet to educate myself on the options.
2. Decide on item to purchase.
3. Search local dealers (price quotes) and canadian websites for pricing.
5. Search ebay/ U.S online parts dealers

This last week.

1. Purchased race seats and harnesses from a local dealer (no price difference among all sources)
2. Purchased new wheels / rims from ebay store. (Saved 1500)

I give the local dealers the opportunity to price the item close to U.S sources (I don't expect the same price, but at least an attempt). Its hit and miss. Some do and some don't.

firestarter
I do like to buy most of my items locally especially if its a difference of 10-20 dollars on a $200 I really dont mind paying the extra to have it in my hand at that time, plus you have someone to go to if there is an issue with the product, ( I work for a dealer ship so I do get cost for all stock parts (factory or jobber, so that helps) but if it is an aftermarket part I phone around locally because I like to hold the part in my hand before I purchase it! I have been ordering parts online lately as most of my cars are somehwhat obscure and need parts from a specialty shop! but if I see a part that I know is a great product online, for a good deal I will snag it of the infonet!! Plus I like to parts shop in my underwear!!!!!!!!!! just make sure you know what you are getting before ordering online!

midnite
Everytime I buy locally, it seems there is one part missing. :dunno:

Whenever I buy from internet stores or from people in forums, everything is there.

anschutz_93
I always try to buy locally first, (unless it has to be ordered, if I'm going to be waiting a week I might as well buy it online) many items can be picked up at the same price or cheaper thru the local shops. I just picked up a wideband O2 system in the city for just a couple bucks more than It was listed on the company site (in US dollaz). For the four bucks difference or whatever it was I couldn't have gotten a letter shipped from california, let alone a wideband kit.

antidote
hmmm i bought most of my parts online because i don't have much time to buy it on my dealer. from cold air intake to radiators, i bought it all in autopartswarehouse. truck parts are usually on my list to buy. recently i purchased repair manuals to help on my diy auto repair training.

Arikara1985
I buy online. Actually just finished ordering a set of quarter louvers for my Mustang online. It's easier and can be more convient then buying at a store (plus it's typically way cheaper).

As far as parts go, speedtech has treated me very very well, prices are unbeatable IMO.

I can honestly say i doubt I would have saved any money buying online vs. what they have given me for prices. By the time you factor in shipping, customs etc. its usually no better to buy stateside. Never mind that you only need to get burnt on 1 internet transaction to lose all the savings you think you got.

If you haven't already gone to speedtech, give them a shot, the guys that run that place genuinely care about happy customers. But I know how most of the idiots on here are, they go into a place like speedtech and expect 30% a spoon shift knob even though they have never bought anything there. My advice is spend some money at speedtech and get to know the guys, they will treat you right.

I have bought stuff off the net, there is nothing wrong with it and once in a while you find great deals. There is also parts you cant get here from the local shops like the knock off Hytech headers.

in conclusion, speedtech FTW
