so recently as the temperature dropped to siberian temps,i was fumbling around outside trying to find the block heater chord in my gf's 08 lancer. i figured that this being canada and all this car would have a block heater in it. it only took me about 5 mins to realize that this car didnt have a block heater at all.
it was late and the dealership was closed so we couldnt call them. my gf googles it and found some mitsu site with a forum containing the answer to my question.
a member posted a topic about the new lancers and not having block heaters. mitsubishi had told him that the car does not come with a block heater nor does mitsubishi even make a block heater for it, and that the motor is designed to start up in -45 without a block heater.. so to verify this i had my gf call the dealer the next day,she was told the same story as what we read online.
so the next morning when it was time for her to go to work, she goes out to start the car. moments later returns furious her car wont start. the temp didnt even reach -35 that night. so after an hour or so of trying to boost the car i finally get it going.
long story short . who doesnt put a block heater in a car in canada.ive heard VW has it as an option. but ive never heard of a manufacturer not even making a block heater for a car in canada.
so after alot of bitching she had one installed for free(would have cost 250)by the dealership. we were also told that the eventually all the new models will be designed to start in -45 without a block heater.as it sits right now the outlander and the lancer do not have block heaters or have it as an option.
its $250 for a chrysler block heater that will match up.
anyways i probably should have put this in the off topic section.
sorry for the long read. i could have made this short.
thanks

| Why get mad at Mitsubishi? You should have known what the car did and didn't come with, and figured something out. There are other options to block heaters. |

X2 you should have figured everything out about the car before hand. And if she got it for 250$ kudos to her because with labor were charging well over 400$. |

| LOL i'ts hilarious the kind of bullshit dealers will tell you. All cars need block heaters in Canada. They just don't tell you they've added it to your MSRP. Sometimes they even make it a $$ option. |

some honda/acura models same thing
no block heater you have to get it installed |

but i found it funny that they can tell you the motor is designed to start in -45 without a block heater. and then it wont even start in -30.
im not mad at the dealer. and yes we should have asked about it at the time of purchase. but we were in a rush to get her a car before it snowed because she was driving mine in the meantime. |

| Your lucky he told you it was "designed to start in -45".. because if you would've called and the dealer would've been like "Yes, Lancer's don't come with block-heaters" end of conversation, You would've been fucked:D |

| A block heater was an option when I bought my old Civic, but the dealer it was manditory. He wasn't allowed to sell my the car without installing it. I never did plug in the Civic ever though, even though it is parked outside in -30 something and it has never failed to start. I used Mobil 1 oil too. |

250 for a block heater? Which one did they tell you fits the lancer?
I know some of the srt4 neon guys didnt get a block heater also when they bought them new. And the $tealerships tried to tell some that there was no heater that would fit also, until some figured out that the engine was the same for some Pt cruisers.
FInd out what size you need and start searching for one that fits, cuase you shouldnt have to pay 250 for one, unless its installed by a mechanic, even then you should be able to find a deal on that also |

| How can a 2008 car have problems starting at -35?!?!? That is insanity! |

| Yeah... My 1999 MGM started up all week just fine, even when it was -40 with a -50 windchill... Never plugged it in or anything. It barely even hesitated. I got an oil change and it fires up even better now. |

| Yeah, my SUV doesn't have a block heater, either. However, it still manages to start even in this weather and it's usually parked outside:dunno: |

my 91 tercel started with no problem,\
04 srt-4 wouldn't :dunno:
I was surprised because it only has 8.1 compression... |

yeah they said 250 for install. but bitched and had it done for free. women are good at that.
my tahoe sat for a week in close to -40 when i was on the rigs and fired up first try. and my old ek hatch would fire up no problem as well . i dont think i plugged it in once.
and then like i said the lancer wouldnt start in -30. |

That sucks about the block heater.. I dont know why mitsubishi wouldent want to put a block heater in for car up here in canada, stupid move on their part. I work at Acura, and when we PDI a new car, we always install a block heater in every car.. I dont know why other dealerships dont.
I dont think its fair to the people buying the car, because your buying a brandnew car that comes with navi, dvd players, xm radio, they can put all these features into cars, but they cant install a simple block heater.
Hopefully, it doesent get that cold anymore for this problem to arrise again. |
