Fastest Car Under $8K? - Click HERE for Original Thread

targus
I'm looking for a decent car that has potential of being fast.  My budget is about $6K but I think I can weasel another $2K if possible.

NO v8's please, I couldn't afford the gas or maintanance.

reno
I'm sure you'll hear from the Talon boys on this.

Other things to consider, AE86's fun factor can't be beat.

Also what are you defining as fast?  Corners? Drag?

BlueTurboEGG
An NX!, what else? <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Loose
heh,

Straight line:  Talon (but it's a Talon) or 5.0 (but it can't stop or turn)

Corners:  RX-7 (But keep $3K kickin around incase your motor pops)

Economy:  Hondas, Dubs, and Nissans <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

if you want fast a turbo car will be best of choice. it might not be the most reliable. 1st generation talon can be had but might need some work.

BlueTurboEGG
Chances are though, if it's a turbo car that is under 8K, it's been bagged...

Probably will need some work.

Saw a chameleon paint Talon at this auto dealership on St. Albert trail northbound, around the furniture places...

targus
I can't think of many stock turbo cars,

RX7 T2 - rare and over priced
Talons - not known for reliability
Celicas - They seem to be slow even with the turbo

Anybody?

2000silverimpreza
are we talking about turbo cars for a $8k budget or turbo cars that come from factory in general? if you add a few $k's to your budget you might have a better starting poing. some more turbo cars from factory. these cars usually come in very bad shape.

earily 90's dodge stealth RT(more than $8k)
toyota supra mk3(very rare)
late 80's nissian 300zx single turbo(very rare)

BlueTurboEGG
Perhaps an engine swap then?.

Or find a good base and turbo the crap out of it <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Like an old RX and swap in a 3 rotor...

I've seen a video from Japan where the guy put a 3 rotor turbo in a AE86, with over 600+ hp!.

It's hilarious, they're following the guy around, and then suddelny he gasses it, a puff of smoke, and GONE!

Talk about the ultimate sleeper, and you'd still be on top in terms of cash <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> oh if only I could start my project again...

My personal wet dream is a R34 Skyline powered 240SX... with the AWD intact <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> which I don't even think anyone has even considered because of the ridiculousness of the idea. But hey, I'm allowed to dream.

wong
What about an MR2?

You have a choice of SC or TC! But I doubt you will be able to get teh TC at >$8K.

Anyways, that's a pretty good number.  You could do a lot with that.  But a car and a bike!

BTW - what happened to your ride?

Talonts96
$8K or $15K ...whatever.  Go with a Talon 1G or 2G if you want to go fast in a straight line and have good handling.

Reliability?  Ask TALONV8KILLER about reliability of a Talon.  Here is a car that has more than double the horsepower of the stock version on a stock engine (stock head and stock bottome end) and the car has over 200,000 K.  It never blew up yet.  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->  Dont believe the roumours that Talons are so unreliable.  Try doubling the power on a Honda on stock internals and see what happens to the engine....BOOOM!!! lol

where can i find a talon in good shape?
i've test driven one, a 1995 tsi awd, and it passed inspection really well. just needed a tune-up, no big problems, possibly a weak bov (cuase it seemed a little too noisey... i drove a 1g talon and it didn't make that swoosh noise as much) and a possible wearing clutch (engaged quite close to the floor)...
it felt really nice, seemed like around 2500 it kinda' wanted to get going cuased you'd feel it in your lower back. didn't really get a chance to go wideopen with it... but the owner told me it really goes at 4500rpm...
couldn't make a move on this car becuase insurance has become a bigger deciding factor...
what insurance companies do you guys use?

how's about what's a peppy car that i could buy that won't kill me on insurance?... and where do i find it?...

this might seem off-topic here,... but i'm just curious if there is a known eagle 2000gtx here with a turbo added to it?

PUHLEASE!

Where do you get your info from?

Try running a Talon for 100K stock...BOOOM!

BlueTurboEGG
Stock SR20DE Motor can handle it <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

the only way a Talon engine stock at 100K or more will go boom is if the timing belt goes.  Guess what if the timing belt goes on any (interference) engine it will go boom.  That includes all the hondas.  where do I get my info from?  Hmm have you looked at the solid block design of the 4G63 versus the sleeved design of the Honda engines?  Hmm I wonder why Hondas need bracing for big HP.  Because the block isnt solid and the sleeves go BOOM under lots of power.

Talons have a self adjusting hydraulic clutch.  The HIGHER is engages from the floor, the more warn out your clutch is (pretty sure about this).

Doesnt happen to all, just some.  I dont think its a high % of them that have it, its just that you hear of so many because lots sold.    Back in the late 80s early 90s (i think those years) porsche 944's had a very similiar problem, but you dont hear of it as much because there are very few of them kicking around.

Just get it checked for crankwalk, and do all the precautions and i dont see why you would have a problem.

I always wanted a fwd talon, nothing like lighting them up on the freeway.......
