What would be a rather 'normal' oil temperature? I guess I got a little worried today when I was driving in downtown, and the temperature of the oil raised to 190F - 87.7C - is it a sign that I should get an oil cooler? I am just not sure what would be the normal operating range for a mineral/synthetic oils? (other than simple fact that synthetic oils are less prone to the thermal break-down).
Any suggestions???
thanks!!  |

87C oil temp.. that doesnt seem to be that high, I'd assume your OK. But the cooler you keep your oil the better. It wouldnt hurt to add an oil cooler, on the other hand its just "another thing to go wrong".
87 Seems quite cool *shrug* i dont have a temp sensor for my oil so I dunno :)

| 87 is no problem at all under normal driving conditions, I don't know what car you have though, not even NA or FI.. But race car can go up to 120-130, and even that if they don't keep climbing, it is not an big issue and of course, the cooler is always the better. HTH. :) |

yea, NNHC is right
i remember reading something says that engine oil start to break down when the temp is over 120~130C, don't really remember..... |

well that's the temperature most oils lose their ability to resist viscosity. there are synthetic oils that can stand temps much more than that.
to actually decompose motor oil, you'd need a lot more energy and a lot more pressure. |
