3 cheers for Blu-Ray!! - Click HERE for Original Thread

Perilous_Enterprises
So I wonder, how many of you are stuck with an HD-DVD player?? Toshiba officially announced they're pulling out of the format war, leaving Blu-Ray victorious!! I was pretty sure right off the top that HD-DVD wouldn't make it, since the PS3 was blu-ray. But do I ever feel smrt for not buying HD-DVD.

Praylewd powr
i think it is funny that people are saying....getting stuck. I had an xbox 360, love it, the HD player for it was uber cheap--no brainer. And some of the titles I liked were HDDVD. Now I will just get a bluray drive too. no big deal. I enjoyed watching transformers 20 times in HD.

I figure in electronics, you should plan for obselescence and that is what I did. I didn't care which way it went.

Not stuck, the HD drive still works and so do my HDDVD's.

;)

Too bad the PS3 is a giant pile of monkey garbage.

Them's fightin words!!!

I will admit though, there's a lot of hype that it doesn't live up to.

jarago
I bought a ps3 just for blu-ray...and heavenly sword, which is kinda cool/gay
what other games are good that are exclusive to ps3? isn't Final fantasy gonna be on it?

2ndgenlude
i don't see how the ps3 is a pile of garbage. i own 360/ps3/wii and honestly i use my ps3 the most, mostly due to the blu ray drive.

Right. So you bought a glorified DVD player?

It's shit as a console... Has zero selection for games. How long has it been out? Over a year now?

My cell phone plays games too... Does that mean I consider it a gaming console? Hardly.

I use my cell phone way more than I use any other gaming console - but 90% of the time it's used as a phone.

ChromeDragon
I guess it goes up in the attic with my beta tapes, laserdiscs and the boxes of Patriots Perfect! 19-0 t-shirts.:dunno:

its a game console. so it doesn't have the best game selection. who cares. its still the cheapest blu ray player out right now. plus a game console in the same package and people are dumb for owning one? games will come. and considering im not a fan of any one system my opinion is non-biased. every console has its ups and downs.

Prudz_lude
uummmm gt5, gta5, final fantasy, metal gear solid, and there are are a few more HUGE games coming out all this year only for PS3, other than gta5. I have an xbox360 and will be selling it soon for a ps3 simply because those games kick ass.

SilverNeonRacer
I was about to buy a multi format hd/blu-ray reader drive for my htpc.. so it wouldn't matter :P

EK9Hatch
Blu-Ray? Pfff....

I've already got my hands on the soon to be released Gold-Ray! :D

I just did that last week. Just before Toshiba made their call. Good timing i guess. The 360 is still better for gaming. But thats about to change i think. And Blu-Ray FTW. I cant watch SD DVD's anymore...

It would have been nice if Wal-mart would have exserted their retail power a year ago by just picking one of the formats. Guaranteed the format war would have ended nearly instantly after they picked one, whether it be HD or Blu-ray.

Its business. Why would they sell one format when they could sell both?

Because the general public didn't buy either out of fear of picking the wrong one. It is generally accepted that both formats together have sold less players & movies than if there was just one standard from the beginning.

Besides, I'm sure Wal-mart probably could have strong-armed Sony by negotiating exclusivity rights to Blu-ray in exchange for a discount on product compared to other retailers.

Kyle

Alpha Gangsta
I was one of those sitting on the fence for awhile waiting till they came out with a good dual player that could read both formats reasonably well or until there was a clearcut winner.
At least now we have a so called "winner"... too bad I gave in a few weeks ago and bought a HD Player and a bunch of movies..... but oh well, at least I didn't waste as much money on the HDs as I did on Laser Disc back in the day. Now that was expensive with some movies costing $100 a movie!

The PS3 is the overall better built console. In it's first year compared to the 360's first year, it has sold more consoles and has a better line up of games.

It has no selection of games? What kind of fucking crack are you smoking? Uncharted, Warhawk, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, and Heavenly Sword. All of which are first year exclusives and smash the line up of 360 first year exclusives. Then in 2008, the PS3 has the far superior line up. MGS4, GT5, FFXIII, Haze, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and Little Big Planet. What does the 360 have that is going to be a "killer" app? Gears of War 2 and it won't be exclusive due to the fact it will end up on PC within 6 months of release and will be far superior just like Gears of War.

As an of owner of all 3 consoles, the PS3 easily has the best potential. The Wii has been collecting dust for 6 months (nothing more then a gimmick and may play it for a week once Super Smash Brothers comes out) and the 360 while have some great games on it has no great exclusives (virtually all the 360 exclusives are available on my PC and play better on it) and can break down without a moments notice...I am currently on my 3rd 360 since release date.

:::On Topic:::

Glad someone was finally declared winner. Within 3 months, I can go to a Wal-Mart/Future Shop/Best Buy and pick up virtually every HD-DVD ever made that I don't own for like $6.99/each when the stores are trying to get rid of the stock. It was obvious from the beginning that Toshiba was doomed to fail, if Microsoft would have fully supported HD-DVD and included it as the main drive of the console like Sony did with Blu-Way, it would be a MUCH different war.

midnite
Microsoft is selling their HD-DVD drives for XBOX for 49.99 now as they are discontinued.

If you would have read my post, you would have saw what I said about my PC running the 360 "exclusives" better then the 360 can. E6850, dual 8800 GTX's, 4gb RAM, and all that fun stuff.

But when it comes down to it, consoles are just as good if not better then PCs for gaming in certain aspects. Metal Gear Solid > every game series ever made, so gotta own a console just for that reason alone.

Oh and btw, real gamers make EVERY gaming platform available to them, the ones who stick to a single thing (whether it be PC, PS3, 360, Wii, etc.) is a fanboy not a gamer.

That pic has 2 19" wide, 2 19" square and a 17" wide(on the laptop)

Now it's l-r 17" wide on the laptop, 19" square, 19"wide, 24" wide. 22" wide, 19" wide. heh

She's got all the rigs hooked up via synergy and something else. synergy lets her control all the computers with one keyboard/mouse and also lets her send the same command to multiple computers at the same time with one keystroke.

Ohh and there's a Mac G3 off to the right out of the picture...

She does gaming and graphic design, so she does use it all, and yes the lights to dim when she turns them all on..

Name one card on the market better for gaming then the 8800 series (that is currently available). ATI has been dead for years, you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAH

"ATI has been dead for years"

You're the biggest fucking moron on the face of the earth. The 8800-series has only been out for ~1 year. Prior to the DX10 game, the ABSOLUTE best DX9 gaming card was the X1950 from ATI, and there's not a single person with half a brain that will deny that. The X1900-series DESTROYED the 7900-series in price and performance. Not to mention that the X1900-series could perform both AA + HDR simultaneously.

Is the 8800-series bad? Hell no. Were they first to market with a DX10 card? Yes. Did they drop the ball with Vista drivers for over 10 months? Yes. Are the cards good performers? Yes. Does Nvidia charge and exorbitant premium for their cards? Yes.

The ATI Radeon HD3800x2 1GB will destory an 8800 Ultra 768MB from Nvidia. Not only that, they'll do it at a fraction of the cost, over 35% cheaper in fact.

Please. Noob. STFU.

SilverNeonRacer
I have a x1950xtx.... swapped it out and put a 7950gx2 in it's place :P Mind you it was due to the sapphire BIOS conflicting with a particular game...

after a bit we put the 1950 back into play as newer drivers and patches for the game helped the issue..

as far as the 8800series... my neighbour has an 8800 768MB version I believe.... the 7950GX2 smokes it.....

The 3780 x2 or whatever the dual gpu card out for $450ish... looks promising... 'specially with a quad pci-e baord... heh

Ya, the HD3850 is awsome. With Crysis in 1680 x 1050 at Very High the HD3850 runs the game at an average of 7 FPS, while the 8800 GTX runs it at 35 average, even running the 3850's in Crossfires they won't come close. nVidia has out shined the ATI series of cards since the 6xxxx series of cards.

Plus with the 9800GTX series coming out next month (I think it is next month) you got a card coming out in the $450-$500 range that is running the equivalent of dual 8800 Ultras. Then in November the GT200 series releases (that's the rumored name I believe). In my honest opinion, ATI hasn't made a good card since the 9xxx series, the only good thing their good for is discount cards (and even then, you can just buy a 8800 GT and still out perform every ATI card).

But when it comes down to it, your a ATI fanboy, I'm a nVidia fanboy. I think your opinion is worth fuck all and you think the same of mine, so might as well agree to disagree unless you want to keep acting like a child.

AudiInProgress
The X1800/X1900-series was FAR better than the 7800/7900-series... And to say that ATI's last good card was the 9800 is a joke.

And I never said anything about running dual cards. The HD3800x2 is a single card, with 2 gpus, very similar to the 7900GX2 Nvidia put out a few years ago.

Nvidias 9800-series will come out, and ati's R700 series will come out, and only time will tell who wins that battle.

SilverNeonRacer
The X850xt was a pretty good card, my wife ran it side by side with a 9800xt (2 system gaming on both at the same time) she never once said the 9800 was better, their both in service in her lower end gaming rigs.

I have an X1800XT, I'm not inpressed with it... but it's in my file server running server 2003 enterprise, and I'm not impressed with the quality it shows on my projector... the 6800Go in my laptop does a much better just at that... then again on the server I've tried DVI to hdmi and DVI to d-sub.... on the laptop since I can't force it to use the dvi out, it flips to the d-sub so I had the d-sub attached to the projector.... to cable based conversion going on.

I like NVidia.... but I'm not impressed at all with the 8800series... every test I've done with dx9 (xp) the 7900 series has been better... shoot like I said the neighbout with the 8800 plays evercrack and she got better fps with her old 5600 series video card... Just to hlep her out I'm thinking of trading her the 8800 for the x1800xt(the file server does 0 gaming.. just movies sometimes)

nice stereotype:thumbup:

No-Pistons
played both ps3 and 360 ps3 is 100 times better. You dont have to pay to play online i know its only 60$ a year but thats the cost of a game.
The ps3 is way more than a game system if you have it on the same router and your computer it can detect it and allow you to play movies, music, and show pictures from your computer on your ps3.
Also for playing downloaded movies it awesome there hasn't been a format yet that it can't play.
And then theres the controllers are you kidding me AA's for the xbox ok where not in 1985 the ps3 controllers will last you a good 3 days of 10 hour playing then take about 2 hours to recharge.
And then theres the blue-tooth you can hook your phone headset up to it no need to have yours plugged in to anything like with the 360.
