Negotiating below MSRP - Click HERE for Original Thread

Ascended
Hi there. I was looking into getting an 08 Accord Ex-L and pretty much set on buying it in the next couple months when the semester is over. How many of you have had a good experience with getting the stealerships to give you below the MSRP. That is to say your invoice is less than advertised, I'm sure I can get things thrown in, but for a definitive price reduction itself. I'm reading on driveaccord.net and these guys are all getting their Accords, granted it's from the US, but below the sticker price. I'm pretty good and bargaining, but does anyone have any tips or success stories?

Thanks :blue:

Does anyone have this service and would do me a favor of checking the invoice for the car?

u should be able to negotiate at least 1000-2000 off most hondas, any more will take luck, or some effort. however you are going to be buying at the busiest season of the year for car sales, so expect to pay more then if you bought in a slow month, like most of fall is.

also, if u want to get a good deal, shop around at every dealership in the city, do a test drive at every dealership, and spend a few weeks negotiating on MSRP. Do not buy on the same day you start negotiating, give them ur contact info and let them make the first offer. Seriously spend at least a week dicking around with negotiating on msrp; ask about demos prices, older models, etc (do not buy a demo ever lol) to drag it out (time is on ur side as long as they know ur serious about buying). once you have a good offer from one dealership, feel free to go to another that also gave you a decent offer, and tell them to beat the best offer you got so far. if they won't, walk out, but odds are they will, and have them make it worth your while; 300-500 more off (only pull this crap once, if you try going back and forth with this, i hope they refuse to sell a car to u cuz its a lame tactic and annoying as hell). expect to have to sign or have to put a deposit down proving you will buy from that dealership. once that is done, the rest is completed that day. let them tell you about the admin fee and all hte taxes. they should eat the admin fee since that is their cost of doing business, if u are lucky they may eat the tire tax and ac tax, who cares either way since its cheap. then after that is done is the final phase, where you talk about additions on the vehicle like 3m and all that crap. its over priced but if u want it from the dealership, negotiate on that after everything else has already been settled.

i managed to negotiate just over 4500 off MSRP on a new RSX back in the day by following the advice i just gave. they started with saying maybe i would get 500 off if i was lucky, 2 weeks later, 4500+ saved and i only had 2 acura dealerships to work with.

Ty Zhao, your advice is quite valuable, I will take all of it into consideration, when I venture into this.

I wouldn't waste the time if I were you. Like come on, you're a busy person with shit to do right? And you should show some respect for the salesman and his time if you want him to treat you well too.

What I do is I walk in, tell them exactly what I want and that I'm ready to buy on the spot. Then I throw down an offer. They'll usually laugh at you, and at that point, you decide if they're bluffing or not. If they are bluffing, then stick around and negotiate. If they're actually not interested in your bidness, then head to the next dealership.

I've read before (but never experienced) of faxing/emailing the Sales Manager for each dealership in the area with exactly what you are looking for (all the details) and that you'll be picking the best price from all the responses received. People who state they try this all claim to get under MSRP.

It's a thought, I'm not claiming it would work, but it would definitely be the option with the least amount of work for you/hassle with salesmen.

I've used carcostcanada successfully on at least two prior vehicle purchases and it works.

On our most recent purchase, my wife's altima, we saved a total of about ~ $3000 below MSRP (that includes savings on a few options and GST as well).

Having the dealer invoice information up your sleave definitely helps your bargaining position.

I also don't believe in wasting money on getting info from the net for a charge. Why not just ask the dealership? Sure the sleaze bags will lie to you, but the good sales managers that you'll want to do deal with will just tell you if you ask what their invoice pricing is up front.

A ~$30 subscription fee is PEANUTS compared to the thousands you can save.

Sure you can ASK dealerships, but they are not required to disclose their invoice costs to you. If they choose not to, there's nothing you can do but walk out the door.

showing some respect to the salesman has nothing to do with it. if ur serious about buying, ur not wasting his/her time. buying a car is the 2nd biggest purchase most people ever do and its a item you will be using every day for years to come, i think someone can afford to 'waste' a day or 2 test driving and a few hours over the course of a week or 2 negotiating on it :P

Also, who cares what the dealership pays for the car. your goal is to get it as cheap as possible, and their goal is to get a car sold and make a bit off it. With new cars, volume is usually where its at. also, little 'secret', those dealer invoice numbers are not exactly what dealerships actually pay for cars. you will never know what a dealership actually paid for a car, and you shouldn't, its really none of ur business.
