go on either system and type \\192.168.0.1 or whatever your ip address on the opposite system. if that brings it up then your pcs are networked for starters... |

Vista's sharing can be pretty gay... If you're trying to share files/folders from your Vista box, there are several ways to go about it, I would suggest ensuring your sharing permissions are set for "EVERYONE" will full access. I run Vista on my media center/file server, and I have like 5 hdd's shared out of the root, and gave "everyone" full access. That way I can log in from any XP machine in the house and move shit around, or download stuff on the XP boxes and transfer it to the file server for storage, whatever.
And if you're trying to access files/folders/printers on the XP shares from the Vista box, there really shouldn't be anything special there... Right-click enable sharing, done. |

| also every time i try to set the permission to share and hit OK, it always stops responding for some reason, like if i click the sharing tab it freezes and stops responding |

| "Not Responding" explorer windows are usually resultant of corruption... However, seeing as this notebook came pre-loaded with Vista, it should work... Should being the operative word. Have you tried (just for shits and giggles) creating a new user profile on the notebook and working from within that? |
|
|

| no luck with a new profile, iam ready to give up and format and put XP on |

| Yeah... If it's going to be your daily use PC, go back to XP, Vista is great for surfing the web or watching videos and shit... But for mission critical PC's like office work or gaming... XP is still king. |

So much hate towards a new OS......
Vista is fine if people take the time to learn it. People get mad because it doesnt work like XP.... well , its not XP, its a completely new operating system.
Vista doesnt even have a solid service pack release yet. (yes I know about the beta). XP was just as bad before SP2.
I cant wait till they start releasing PC's with Linux pre-loaded on it... rofl. |

On a serious note........
Go to control panel, network/sharing center...
Click "customize" Make your connection Private.
Turn on:
Network discovery
File sharing
Public folder sharing
Printer sharing
Media sharing.
If you have Ultimate or Business, go start, run, type "secpol.msc"
Click local policies, security options, and play around with the Network access/security options if the above steps dont work. |
|

Also, if your internet is slow on vista.......
Turn off TCP windows scaling...
Run Command prompt as adminitrator...(start, accessories, cmdprmpt, right click, run as admin) . Cut and paste this command.
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
Sped up my download by almost 4000kb/s |

another thing to try is set the same user name and password on both computers, so it won't ask you for authentication. (since you aren't in an active directory setup).
though, sounds like it isn't even getting that far. do you have any internet antivirus/security/firewall software on the computer? |

| Not sure if this was mentioned, but on the XP machine which you are trying to share from, go to Start->run-> type 'gpedit.msc', go to local policy, comp conf, windows settings, security settings, local policies, security options, and change 'Network Access: sharing and security model for local accounts' to 'Guest Only' instead of 'Classic'. |
