Before you get all racey boy read this;
M5 airstrip crash kills 5
and read his posts;
"AmericanM5" on the M5 Boards
This happened in a brand new M5. What are you running, and how well is it maintained?
If you are properly trained, with a maintained car on a course/track and maturity then fine.
but,
If you are in a twenty year old car with mismatched bald tires (that has not had the hood opened in years) passing everyone on the whitemud you are not "street racing" .. you are stupid!
Sadly, your post points towards the latter.
Start with reading about handling and suspension. Then how to brake and corner (apex). Once you have read into driving, then take a course ( any course of note starts in the classroom anyways). Once you have track time, be it solo II, ice racing or drifting you will know why the previous posts are knocking you. |

Thank you. Most of my first post was sarcasm (not sure if everyone caught it >.>) But yeah, I don't wana do anything stupid like the guy in the M5. Thats why I wana learn. But where in Edmonton could I take a course..? Or do you mean like go to NAIT and study mechanics? |

The Northern Alberta Sports Car Club
a good place to start
Hang around with these guys, work a few races.. see where it gets you
or
Alberta Solo Association
but if you keep it on a track/course you can take all the money you have saved from tickets and impound fees and buy more cars

They do. It's arguably the best racing school for roadcourse racing in Western Canada. Nearly all the other groups that put on schools (BMW club, Porsche Club, Calgary Exotic Car club) all come to the NASCC and ARCA to put on on their schools. (NASCC and ARCA are effectively the same people, but separate clubs for events around Edmonton (NASCC) and at Race City in Calgary (ARCA) - Don't ask me why, I don't know...) We all go down to Race City in the summer for the ARCA events and the Calgarians (sometimes) come up here for our events.
I've been working trackside at the schools for 5 or so years now, and will finally be driving in it this year.
Here's the info on the ARCA course
It's $500 for the weekend and you're on your own for food & accomodations (Sue can help you out there if you need it.) The first day is nearly all in the classroom learning car set-up, racing theory (like apexng, driving the different types of corners, flags, etc.). The morning of the second day is spent learning basics like threshold braking and car control with exercises like a brake-and-avoid box and slalom while the new marshals learn what to do and watch for to keep everyone safe. The afternoon is spent on the track with speed limits imposed that are raised until the last 2 or 3 sessions are unrestricted.
Course marshals in Alberta are few and far between. We don't have nearly enough to properly run our races, and are often in danger of shortening the track due to shortages. Luckily for Edmonton, there are a lot of out-of-town people that come in to help out for the Grande Prix, but locals ALWAYS get first shot. As if we need any more incentive, there's free accommodation and food for workers at the events, and access to the best "seats" ('cause you're standing) at any event. (Think the other side of the WALL, not just the fence).
The marshal school is free and they feed you... We're in dire need of trained course marshals in Alberta (we only have a little over 1/4 of the number we need), so if you're interested in racing on the road course, bring along your friends and family and get them to become marshals. Not only do they get the best seats in the house for the races, but you them have a spotter out on the track that can help give you pointers to go faster. I think you get point for supplying workers too, but I could be wrong there. Anyway, PM me with your email if you're interested and I'll put you in contact with the right people.
Sorry for the shameless plug, but hey, it wouldn't be shameless if I didn't put it in here - besides, there's still the info for the driving part. |
