scanner laws - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've been unable to find anything about operating police radio scanners in vehicles anywhere in the traffic regs or Industry Canada. I'm wondering if anyone knows the laws wrt listening in on our LEOs. How about when used "in furtherance of a crime", theoretically antyhing like speeding, robbing banks, etc? What if you're a licensed ham operator? It can be more entertaining than normal radio, but I don't want to get caught speeding with it turned on, then get charged with some felony.

I believe that it is still provincial... When I lived in Manitoba, I knew for sure that it was not allowed to have a scanner in ur car unless you were a ham-radio licenced operator(i am). I think it might be in the federal radio laws now(Industry Canada), since they took over... that's a good one, now I want to look it up too!

might be good motivation to finally get my ham license, is morse code still required? :P

code not required for basic class anymore... that gets you all privileges above 30MHz, except for modified radios and modifying radios, and transmitter power. if you get better than 80%, you can go on HF too.

I found the Manitoba law finally, it's in their HTA. Theres a section about TV's in vehicles, and prohibited radio receivers capable of receiving the 3 specific ranges where the trunking radio systems operate, plus the abandoned VHF RCMP frequencies in Manitoba, where I think WPS still operates.

maybe Alberta doesn't have such a law...?
