One of my friends was given a Mazda 323 for free, because the previous owners (friend of his parents) was told it needs a transmission. The car runs and drives fine, and only slips at higher speeds. The body is in amazing condition with no rust. I checked the transmission fluid (it's an auto) and it was black, so I'll probably change that for him, and the engine oil is pretty nasty .. so thinking of doing a run of cheap oil with seafoam and then put some better oil in afterwards.
Does this seem reasonable .. or do you guys think it REALLY needs a tranny? Mind you, the guy who told the previous owner it needed a transmission was a mazda tech ... |

Take it to Doug Moore / Jim Berg at Abbey Road Automotive (the only independant Mazda shop in Edmonton).
As to the AT...well, they weren't great in those days. If it's been abused (no fluid changes), it's likely toast if it's slipping...it'll only get worse. A replacement shouldn't be too hard to find. |

I would change the fluids and see how it drives... If it's not slipping that bad, and you know it's going to eventually need a rebuild, just stick to trips around town... Don't take any 3000 mile road trips.

| My brother had one of those cars, 94 though. It also had a bad transmission and lasted a few months driving around the city. The transmission eventually went on his way to Calgary...but if it was given to him, why not drive it until it is dead? |

All 1990-94 323's are hatchbacks...as the sedan version was the Protege. |

it's green .. in nice shape, and no he's not selling it..
his parents are willing to pay for it, since his mom might use it as a winter car eventually
I also told him to change the fluids, see how it is, and if the tranny dies, get it swapped.. it's a nice car and if it stays that way then it'll be worth it, I told him if he decides to get rid of it, I'll buy it.
What you guys have been saying is the same things I've been thinking and have told him already :p
Oh, BTW, his speedo seems to be quite a ways out.. possibly because of the transmission? |
