Hey guys,
Just picked up a rx7 off another forum member. I am still very new to the rx7/rotary but trying to learn quickly.
few things I have noticed so far with this car is:
1) rough idle (it's not all that bad) car doesn't stall even with all accessories and brakes on...it's just a bit rough once it gets to full operating temperature.
-will look into diagnosing the problem soon
2) clunk in the rear end under acceleration/braking/bumps...from research it has lead be to believe 1 of the 3 is gone bad or even all 3:
-front differential mount
-pillow balls
-power plant frame
Anyone know where I can purchase these parts from?
These look to be the only maintenance issues, other than that I will be looking into aftermarket upgrades.
Ciao

| The cluck could also be your diff bushings or your motor mounts. |

Rough idle could be a vacuum leak.

x2. Do you have any more information on the car? History, mods? |

| did you change the spark plugs? thats something most people overlook when they have a rough idle, and something that should be changed regardless when you buy a used car. |

The spark plugs have been recently changed.
I don't think the idle is that rough in that car... as possible symptom from what I remember last I seen the car was the fuel pulsation dampener... it had a slight leak which would probably the idle to bounce around.
And the clunking sound coming from the rear isn't the PPF, the rear diff mounts or the coil plates. Its the exhaust clunking against the frame. As soon as we put the aftermarket 3" exhaust on it, the clunk arose. Best possible solution here is to get urethane exhaust hangers. That should solve the problem because the stock hangers are extremely useless and spongy in the RX7's. |

| hahaha i didnt even think of the exhaust :P |

Its cool, I drove this car back from Vancouver when it originally came into the country and then my friend Damian bought it. So I've had a long history with it.
Its a solid car and all the proper maintenance has been done. Just needs some fine tuning now and some more boost. |

| yeah i looked at it and drove it, i was like seconds away from buying it hahaha |

| Should have bought it, its a very solid car. In way better shape than my FD, probably one of the best I've seen. |

I amdit I was a little leary about buying the car at first because I had a long drive home and wasn't sure if it was going to make it (you never know when buying a used car if there is something horribly wrong or not)...but it mad it home just fine and was a blast to drive on the highway.
Don't really have any history (besides 95IntegraRS hahaha). And the mods on it is intake, exhaust, and suspension. Other than that she's stock and in great shape.
I'll make sure I take a closer look at the exhaust this week.
Thanks for the help so far...It's going to be hard to learn everything about these cars as they have been around for so long and the information out there is huge.
-The latch to the fuel door is broke, will need to find a way to get this fixed (might need new fuel door).

its a good solid fd that is in great shape no matter what portion of it you look at. maintain it right, and don't do stupid mods on it, and it should remain a good solid FD for a very long time.
when we had it it idled good so its probably something minor if its idling rough now.
if you do do any mods, i'd recommend improving the cooling a bit more, getting some aftermarket temp gauges and a real oil pressure gauge, and probably replacing the air separation tank with an aftermarket one. that AST seemed in pretty good shape, but they do have a history of liking to burst at random points because they are just crappy plastic. |

| CLunking could be from the coilovers, lots tend to do that, hence my relacement to Teins, but if you need I have a full set of CUSCO front and rear aluminum adjustable pillow mounts that will work with any coilover system |

It could be a number of things for sure, but I just decided to take it in to a shop and get all the bushing replaced anyhow. Too bad you let me know about the parts now or I would have taken them off you.
Getting new toe links, rear diff bushings, pillow balls, motor mounts, and rear trailing links installed. hopefully this will cure the problems. But if all this doesn't fix the problem I will look into other fixes.
I do have HKS coilover suspension installed.
Getting my new wheels next month Work Emotion XD-9, 18" front and rear.
Now I am starting to do a single turbo conversion with upgraded radiator and intercooler. |

I don't mean to sound rude but when people say they are doing a single turbo conversion they say it so lightly like its fuck all to do. Please tell me you've done alot of research? You're going to need a power fc, injectors, fuel rail, fuel pump or pumps depending on which way you go, FMIC and upgraded rad like you had already stated, and depending on how you drive you're gonna need to upgrade your differential. And after all that, you're gonna need a really good tune. |

Yeah sorry to make it sound so easy, yeah there's amazingly lots of work to go single, almost like you are putting a turbo into a N/A car...
My list is huge for upgrades when going this way.
Tial wastegate 44mm
Garrett t04s 60-1
making my own manifold, downpipe, chargepipes, etc
HKS SSQV bov
rx7 store extreme fuel kit
supra fuel pump
power fc
gauges
and lots more
But yeah I have done alot of research so far and still doing lots. |

| why'd you go with the to4s? |

like matt said, there was no clunking in that car before the exhaust was put on it. not sure why u are changing out so many components to solve a problem that wasn't there before the exhaust. its either that exhaust, or something that was damaged that can be damaged in 1-2 months of driving without noticeably affecting anything else. so basically there is a 99% chance its the exhaust.
you're replacing 'all' the bushings??? who told u to do that? if someone inspected the car and recommended you to do that then they are an idiot because a bunch of them are brand new as of 4-5 months ago. |

I checked the exhaust to make sure that wasn't the problem before I took it in, that system was very snug up in there and didn't move at all, didn't hit anything under the car either, so it couldn't have been the exhaust.
Well just got back from the shop, oh and it was me that decided to replace all these parts. And I just wanted to let those who said it was the exhaust was wrong. There is no longer any sounds at all coming from the back end. The mechanic showed me the pillow balls and all but 2 were entirely shot and garbage. The car even drives alot smoother and more controllable. |

Havn't actually picked out the exact turbo, I hear the t04s is a good choice for a journal bearing type turbo, it's a newer style than the old t04b. Has good low spool for the street with the proper a/r. I don't have much knowledge in turbo's, I just look at the turbo plots, flow capabilities, and talk to people and see what they are using. |

Theres one turbo that you should pick then. The GT35R. Dual ball bearing. Amazingling quick spool. Talk to Rad about the turbo. He had it on his FD. his name on here is Radride . |

I am going putting the rx7 up for sale. My wife wants me to find something more family friendly for a car instead of putting more into this.
selling for $11,000 just had the rear toe link, diff bushings, pillowballs, and trailing links. Also I do have work emotion xd-9 rims on order from Japan. |
