Is Canada Auto Index a scam? - Click HERE for Original Thread

usdm.s13
So I receive a call today from someone saying they work for a finance company name canada auto index. What he tells me is they finance buyers who have such bad credit they cannot get a loan anywhere else.

He tells me he has a buyer for my S2000 and guarantees me my asking price . I would then go ahead receive a certified cheque from them and the buyer would pick up the car. In the process of this he tells me that it is a certified cheque from RBC and would take up to 24 hours to clear....are certified cheque not exactly what they say they are and take no time to clear? Or am I mistaken?

Anyway this just made the whole thing seem shady and I preceeded to ask more and more questions. I could tell this just frustrated him which made me more wary.

Now he says they need a $380 dollar "refundable" deposit for their services and he would go ahead and put me together with the buyer. But how would I really know it is refundable? There is no paperwork, or face-to-face contact with anyone, I would basically be giving some stranger $380 with no real insurance.

The more and more questions I asked seemed to raise the frustration level on his end and finally he ended up hanging up on me after telling me "I was not man enough":dunno:

Have any of you received calls from companies claiming to do the same thing when selling your car? Has anyone actually followed through with it and had success?

By the sounds of it I avoided being scammed but I would like some input.

No legitimate company would ever conduct themselves in that manner. Report them to the BBB and call the police if you feel they are actually pulling a scam.

First off I know this is a repost, but when I was doing a search for previous threads I could bump I couldn't find one that wasn't locked and I thought that people in the community should be aware of this scam. Please don't lock, just let it die if no one is interested. I'm also going to post this on 780 and the main SK car forum.

I received a phone call the other night from a fairly rude guy asking if I was still selling my vehicle I told him I was and he starts in on a sales pitch like this:

"We are a lease return company that finances people to buy vehicles, for the low price of $199.00 we gaurantee to sell your vehicle within 90 days or your money back."

From the start it sounded like a scam to me, so I say that I'm not interest, then his tone gets even more rude:

Him: "Don't you want to sell your vehicle?" (Very aggresive and rude)
Me: "Well, I guess not." (Very condescending)
Him: "Well people can't afford a vehicle like yours without putting their house up as collateral, we will finance people at a low interest rate and we gaurantee your money" (Still rude)
Me: "Not interested."
Him: Hangs up.

Well I decided to search to see if someone has had a similar experience and I've found out that a fair bit of people have actually been scammed by this service, they have several different websites such as MYCARSOLD.CA, MYAUTOSOLD.CA and some others I can't remember. Apparently they don't update their site and they don't give the refund when your vehicle does not sell through them.

I thought I should post this since it seems like a fair bit of people have been scammed by this company. The number I was contacted from is 1-403-366-1761.

Stay away from these guys. I unfortunately gave it a shot and its true that they call you even if you already have an ad running on their website. Never got one phone call from anyone for my car. Also the package that they send you is a joke. The for sale sign that they say they supply is a photocopied sign.

Certified Cheques

From time-to-time, you may be required to make a payment to a person or business via a certified cheque. When you certify a cheque, RBC Royal Bank® "holds" the funds (for the amount of the cheque). This provides the recipient with a guarantee that your cheque will be paid.

AKA no wait times.. Ive never had a hold on a certified cheque

These guys called me about my car up forsale. I was pretty sure it was a scam, but they still get your attention. They wanted $500 up front to sell my car. The guy was super friendly. I told him that I would pay him $1000 if he could get my asking price, but I wouldnt pay him until it sold. The guy got mad and started arguing with me on the phone, all I said was 'thanks for being a dick and letting me know this is a scam' then he hung up on me.

The guy I talked to was named "Jack" he was very friendly and was knowledgeable it seemed. That was up until the part where he told me to "be a man".

The number he called from was 1-604-628-6622 just so you guys know.

Knew it seemed too good to be true and turns out it was.

Same thing happened to me.

At first he sounded like an interested buyer, asking me about the details and conditions of my vehicle.

Then he introduced himself and what he was all about.

I told him that if he got me my asking price for my vehicle, he could ask whatever he wanted on top of it to the interested buyer.

Or if he wanted he could just deduct his fee from my cheque when it sold.

He told me he needed the money up front to get it going, and it was 100% refundable.

I told him I would need to research it more (I knew it was a scam). He gave me his website and a number to call him back at.

I asked the same thing of why he could just not take it off of the actual sale of the car. He fed me some bullshit answer of only "licensed car dealers" can do that and since they were only a finance company they had to take it up front.

It was very convincing up until he started pushing for money. They even had another guy call saying he was the actual interested buyer and asked more questions about the car.

Now in the process of all of this I was stupid enough to give him one of my e-mail addresses, work address, full name and tell him what bank I was with(absolutly no info other than a name of the bank). Should I be worried that this guy has this info? Is there really anything he could do?

Huge scam!
They contacted me too!

shawley
total scam, everytime i put a car up for sale they call me about it,

i usually tell them to fuck off

or ask where my money was from the last time (i never gave them a dime)

or ask them where my friends money is,

but one time it was funny, because they alwasy say they are out of calgary, so one time i was in calgary and they asked for my credit card number, i said i don't have one but i do have cash, and i'm actually in calgary, i can come to his office and give him cash, as long as i get a bill for it, and the guy started backtracking and hung up

don't trust these scams, they used to be $200 but damn $380 damn thats alot

Same call happened to me, then the "buyer" phoned me at 12:45 a.m.! The police told me not to deal with anyone who is not local, and even to not take a certified cheque unless you go to the bank with the person and get it directly from the bank. Beware!!

Agreed. You saved yourself from a ride on the Hershey highway.

A Bank draft/Money Order/Certified Cheque are guaranteed funds. Meaning that cleared money was used to purchase these items. The receiving FI (your bank) can call to verify the item is legitimate. The issuing FI will have a record of the amount, serial number and in the case of a draft (who it is payable to).

If you deposit through a bank machine, you will have at least a 24hr hold on the amount you do not have clear from your bank card limits. Some FI’s will release the money right away once they verified through the machine, others may not.

At the end of the day, if you have a draft for the sale of the car bring it in. or call your banker and they can watch for it and maybe release the funds for you.

Mike
